For anyone who wants a boost to their general health. The suggested goals are:

EAT 10 PORTIONS OF FRUIT AND VEGETABLES EVERY DAY - if you don't usually eat much fruit and veg I would build up gradually or you could upset your digestion.

DO (AT LEAST) 10 MINUTES OF EXERCISE EVERY DAY - can be yoga, stretching or something more energetic. The plan is that the idea of doing 10 minutes is not too daunting, and having started you may well find you want to do more.

There are no restrictions on what you eat so long as you get your 10 fruit and veg as well. The focus is not on weight loss but on improving our energy levels and hopefully our general mood and well-being. Sign up below and post here to tell us how you're getting on and how you are feeling.

Basic guidance on what constitutes a portion of fruit and veg here and you can download more detailed information by following the link at the very bottom of the page

There is a School In the Woods not too far from here, but you'd miss the sea I suppose.

Dd2 has been eating all day and is now cheerfully insomniac.

That's funny because when i visited the commune, the men were really friendly and chatty and helpful, and the women eyed us suspiciously and were a little bit scary.

Driving lessons not happening for a bit. I'm still thinking. I'm going to do my theory test first, and then maybe call Roger in a couple of weeks and book these lessons.

Boco · 16/09/2007 22:56

ah, the Acorn School sounds perfect for dd1. She can't understand why she has to sit and do writing when there are acorns to collect outside. And i really can't argue with her at all.

TooTicky · 16/09/2007 22:57

Found an article about it.

TooTicky · 16/09/2007 23:02

What a shame these schools are really only available to those who can afford to pay. I know they have to meet their costs, but it sort of goes against their own principles.

Boco · 16/09/2007 23:04

I know we have a steiner school near here - it's an amazing thatched cabin near the woods and sounds amazing, - but only the very well off can send their kids there.

You'd have to run it on a commune

So why don't they get funding? Is it just because they don't follow the national curriculum?

hunkermunker · 16/09/2007 23:30

Haven't read thread, or OP or anything, but I do so love these thread titles. Good work, fruit and veggers.

My friend has been researching this a bit. Some schools did say pay what you can afford but people would take the piss and give small amounts and then somehow be able to have three holidays a year while someone else spent every soare penny. They just can't run without fees. They are campaigning to be able to get the funding per pupil that an ordinary school gets but it's like wading through treacle apparently. Such a shame as there's no reason why the money can't be transferred.

My younger brother was taken out of school at twelve and he was just removed from the school roll. None of the money saved from his pupil funding could be spent on any tuition and my mum was skint and frankly, not up to home ed. He did exclusion projects and went a bit wild but that's another story. He is on a apprenticeship now.

I am very interested in alternative schooling. ds1 has lots of friends and that is the only reason I keep him there. The system is shit. He is always exhausted. The classrooms are dark, the teachers shout, there is no field. I could go on and on about it.

Raspberry and blueberry porridge. Dc's were pretending the berries were like treasure in the sand. They were very jewel-like.
