Feels like something is stuck in my throat

Help? I'm really fed up now. It's been 4 weeks of feeling like this. Literally feels like something is stuck in my throat. I tend to need to burp slot. I've been treated for acid reflux and it's still here and driving me mad. And to be honest really starting to worry me. Could it be hayfever? Though piriton is having no affect on me either. I've never had hayfever before but I have no other symptoms if it is.

Any tips or advice?

Thanks in advance

Following as I had this pre covid in March, still flare up now and then.

So frustrating.

cultkid · 13/09/2020 13:18

How are you doing i was thinking about you last night when I couldn't sleep

Proudnana3 · 13/09/2020 17:01

I’ve decided to go private now as my throat still isn’t right. My go wants to run bloods as she thinks it maybe hormone related due to menopause/ peri menopause. Still have two weeks of ppi’s to take but can’t see anything changing. It stays the same no matter what I eat or drink.

Chevron123 · 15/09/2020 09:19

Following as I have very similar symptoms. I have just finished a month of PPIs and still feeling ok between meals but whenever I eat anything I get the lump in the throat/reflux/cramping pain (mostly in my back). Have heavily modified my diet. I will be really interested to see how you go with the private route Proudana3 as I am tempted to do the same - I suspect the NHS is about to grind to a complete halt shortly. By the way, my symptoms came on very suddenly about a month ago. Is this the same for others or was it a gradual build up? I'm putting it partly down to stress.

Proudnana3 · 15/09/2020 10:11

Mine seemed to start after a bout of flu and throat symptoms never went. I don’t feel a lump as such it’s more dryness and sometimes just a feeling of dry mucus that I can’t clear. The ppis don’t seem to have made any difference at all, neither does going acid free. It’s not by any means unbearable and sometimes I hardly feel it at all but when I do it makes me anxious. I’m having bloods done today to check thyroid and hormone levels and have an appointment tomorrow evening with a private consultant. I’m expecting him to tell me it’s still silent reflux but hopefully will be put on the right path to recovery, I find the current situation of not being able to see a gp face to face very stressful as telephone consultations are very rushed as they are so busy. After my test where a camera was used to look I was told I could go back in 3 months if no change, when I tried the gp said I’d been dismissed so I’d have to be re referred at some point , not very helpful. I will let you know how I get on tomorrow. It’s £200 to be seen and £500 on top for a standard camera test so hopefully will be worth it.

Chevron123 · 15/09/2020 10:29

Thanks. Sounds very similar. How did you find the consultant? Did you go via the GP or did you approach them directly?

Proudnana3 · 15/09/2020 10:42

I rang Nuffield and spoke to them direct I have to get my gp surgery to send my records over to them

Proudnana3 · 17/09/2020 08:21

An update. Had my private consultation last night and he confirmed slight reflux and Globus probably brought on by anxiety. Apparently my last scope I had was not done by a consultant or registrar but a gp that has been trained to scope. Unfortunately he said all gp’s will prescribe lansoprazole for lpr even though it will have no effect what so ever. He spent at least 40 mins getting my history and symptoms and did a scope talking me through everything he saw. In my case I had redness and swelling in my larynx which has become more severe because I’ve not been given the correct treatment and that’s obviously fed on my anxiety as I was not seeing any improvement. He has prescribed me 20mg of esomeprazole twice daily and gaviscon advance 10ml after every meal 20 ml before bed. Apparently gp don’t like to prescribe it as it is so expensive. As for diet he said I’m doing everything right but don’t get to hung up on it as it will add to the anxiety just eat healthy most of the time and everything in moderation even alcohol. He said as mine has been going on for so long he wouldn’t expect me to be completely healed for at least 3-6 months but hoped now with the correct meds I would start to see an improvement in 2/3 weeks. The hard part he said is getting you’re gp to keep prescribing the esomeprazole once my prescription runs out as they can only prescribe 6 weeks at a time and I will need it longer. It is expensive but if I hadn’t gone I’d still be taking meds that we’re doing me no good at all so appreciate it’s not an option for everyone but defiantly recommend to anyone thinking about it.

Chevron123 · 17/09/2020 09:27

Thanks for the update. That's quite reassuring.

CambsAlways · 19/09/2020 12:37

Proudnana hi, just read your latest post when you said the dr did the scope how did he do this? Was it down your throat? Via upper endoscopy into stomach

Proudnana3 · 19/09/2020 14:01

No it was just through my nose and down my throat again but seemed a lot more thorough.
I think I may be having a reaction to these meds though as I’m getting really dizzy so not sure what I will do, maybe just keep with the gaviscon advance as he said nothing else would help.

CambsAlways · 19/09/2020 14:41

Oh yes, I’ve had three of those but mine was for thyroid issues, I’m going to ask for upper endoscopy the one into your stomach as I suspect stomach ulcer having tremendous pain

Proudnana3 · 19/09/2020 17:22

I don’t get any pain other than upper back pain but think this is more muscular as paracetamol eases it and I have had it for years, I’m not sure if the dizziness is the new ppis or hormonal as I’ve had it for a couple of weeks slightly it just got more severe today but then I got my period for the first time in 3 months this morning. Still waiting for blood results too so see what they bring, probably low iron as I had this before. The consultant didn’t seem to think I’d need camera into stomach as I have no symptoms that warrant that but I’d like one just to rule out anything like a hernia, too much dr google I think as I’ve been told several times there’s no reason to suspect it.

Asterope · 11/10/2020 14:24

Wondering how everybody is doing. I'm still waiting on endoscopy, still have the lump in my throat. Occasionally it goes but not for long. Still anxious about it. How are you all doing?

Chevron123 · 11/10/2020 15:30

Well, I seem to be free of some symptoms but have developed others - notably at the "other end". Think IBS type issues and weight loss. Ended up seeing a private consultant and he wants to do CT scan to rule out anything sinister (and based on family history), before doing the endoscopy if that is needed. Only trouble is that because I don't really have any "red flags" it will still take 4 weeks to get a private appointment. Of course my anxiety is off the scale and taking me to some very dark places. In some ways I wish I'd just accepted another month of PPIs from the NHS. Now I'm not sure what to do as having been referred by my GP so they probably won't want to get involved. I will go back to them tomorrow about the anxiety and see what they say.

Proudnana3 · 20/10/2020 15:47

How’s everyone doing? It turns out the meds weren’t causing the dizzy spells, was told at the hospital it was labrynthitus but then after seeing a private consultant was told bvvp. I also have broken a tooth through teeth grinding so defiantly think all my symptoms are anxiety related. Funny thing is since all the dizzy problems I’ve hardly given my throat a second thought.

EternalOptimist7 · 20/10/2020 15:59

I can so empathise with that feeling OP. I had what felt like a big lump of phlegm in my throat for ages - it was awful. And if I coughed to try to shift it, I gagged. Always suffered with my sinuses, post nasal drip etc but this was more extreme & occasionally I thought I would actually vomit 😢Thank goodness it’s gone away by itself but I did have a nasal spray & anti histamines which foolishly I never used.

Literallyfedup · 20/10/2020 16:52

@Asterope after months of suffering (since Feb) and taking various medicines which provided some relief, I have finally realised that I am severely allergic to sanatiser. Don't know if it is the fumes of rubbing alcohol or absorption from my skin but I get nausea, sickness and a lot of phelgm/mucus feeling in my throat. Since last 2 weeks I stopped using sanitiser and stopped using every product that contains isopropyl alcohol (deodorant, disinfectant spray). My problem is gone. Just wanted to let you know incase you are suffering from similar issues.

Literallyfedup · 20/10/2020 16:53

It took 72 hrs from stopping for the symptoms to go down.

Asterope · 20/10/2020 17:03

Oh wow @Literallyfedup - I'm so glad you found a cause, thanks for sharing

SpideyMom · 28/10/2020 22:38

Hi all. Thought I'd check in. How is everyone? I dont know what to do anymore. Its controlling my life. And is worse than ever. Still awaiting the camera into my stomach but the pressure in my throat is unbearable. I also have a localised soreness just in the spot I feel the lump is, though I've been told nothing is there. Its not a sore throat. Its a sore spot inside. I am so miserable now its untrue. Its like i cant swallow anymore. Its the most odd sensation

Literallyfedup · 28/10/2020 22:56

@spideymom sorry to know you are still suffering. Could it be EOE
"Eosinophilic (ee-uh-sin-uh-fil-ik) esophagitis (EoE) is an allergic condition caused by inflammation of the esophagus. The esophagus is the tube that sends food from the throat to the stomach. The most common symptom of EoE in adults is difficulty swallowing solid, particularly dry or dense foods."

SpideyMom · 28/10/2020 23:20

Thank you @Literallyfedup I will give this a read. Honestly I am so miserable about it now. I've convinced myself I'm slowly dying. Dramatic I know but I dont see to be getting anyway and most of the time, daily, particularly at night it's unbearable where it feels like my throat is closed at I swallow.
I've wondered if if could be allergies but ive no idea what it could be. Of an evening my throat feels raw. But again it's very different from a sore throat kind of feeling

Hi @SpideyMom and everyone. I have this too. For about 8 weeks so far. I'm just starting beconase spray and lanzaprazole. It's a horrible feeling isn't it.... to have a lump in your throat? Confused

SpideyMom · 29/10/2020 13:04

Its crazy. Had mine since March. I never ever thought it would go on this long. Especially after having the initial camera up my nose and down my throat, and being told there was no lump. Strangely since then, at the end of June it's got much worse.

I think I've said it before but the only reassuring thing is that SO many others have the same feeling. I mean that in a nice way as normally my mind would have told myself im definitely dying by now otherwise.

Its draining and I hate that I may have this forever
