Feels like something is stuck in my throat

Help? I'm really fed up now. It's been 4 weeks of feeling like this. Literally feels like something is stuck in my throat. I tend to need to burp slot. I've been treated for acid reflux and it's still here and driving me mad. And to be honest really starting to worry me. Could it be hayfever? Though piriton is having no affect on me either. I've never had hayfever before but I have no other symptoms if it is.

Any tips or advice?

Thanks in advance

This is exactly how I felt a few weeks ago. It was horrible. I started taking aniseed gaviscon advance and started exercising every day (no bending/squashing stomach though). Gp then gave me omeprazole which got rid of the tight throat issue but made heartburn worse so I've stopped taking it. I've also cut onions, tomatoes, garlic, citrus and greasy & spicy foods. Raised my bed by about 4 inches. Also only been drinking water for last two days. It is improving but I won't lie, it's bloody hard work. Hope you start to feel better soon @SpideyMom. Try and see/speak to a different gp and be really firm/cry about how it's affecting your quality of life. They have to try and help you.

OhWhatAPalaver · 22/08/2020 20:34

Well I say it was the omeprazole that helped my throat but it could have been any or all of the above really. I'm starting to feel like the ppi's don't help if it's lpr.

SpideyMom · 22/08/2020 21:23

I'm no longer on any medication. They refused to give me more. Still telling me its reflux but as lansoperazole and omperazole both have had no affect since April. But that said, I get it as i felt no improvement at all even with the Gaviscon Advance.

Well i ended up at the walk in tonight. Im exhausted with it and can take no more. Food is getting stuck as the dryness in my throat is unbearable. Everytime I each it feels like im choking. It feels like my throat is totally dry.
As I suspected she wasn't able to treat me. Jusyy checked my obs and said the GP needs to refer me back as the issue is in my throat.

I've come home and had something to eat. Lay here feeling like it's all lining my throat. Im going to make myself sick and it feels awful

Have you lost weight?

Proudnana3 · 23/08/2020 09:06

The PPIs can take months to work up to six and they need to be taken every day, that’s what I’ve been told anyway. I was feeling better and then we had to have our 11 year old beagle who we all loved dearly put to sleep and my throat became swollen again and the feeling of post nasal drip returned. It’s not awful just a bit annoying at times, still no other symptoms at all. I’ve got two months of lansoperazole left to take and am loosing weight and exercising so hopefully it will resolve. I’ve also forgot what a normal throat should feel like now. I would defiantly be demanding to be seen by another gp spidymom it’s what they are there for.

SpideyMom · 23/08/2020 09:47

The lady last night said I need to make a complaint as the only way forward is the be re referred to ENT.

I have lost weight but ive cut out all picking and upped my exercise.

My throat today is so swollen though. This is the first time since it all started where I've had throat pain like this

SpideyMom · 23/08/2020 11:10

I'm finding it all so draining.

Can anyone help me with what to say to my Gp tomorrow please? I need that referral back

OhWhatAPalaver · 23/08/2020 14:34

Snacking is actually recommended for reflux so try and eat little and often. If you have lpr the treatment will often not work for quite some time I believe. As I'm still getting heartburn all the way up to my throat and mouth I'm going to call the gp tomorrow to and ask for a referral and maybe different meds. However I read yesterday that the only proven medication to work for lpr is gaviscon advance. Gp's tend to over prescribe ppi's and are too reluctant to refer to the appropriate specialists so I'm sort of reluctant to take them personally, especially since the omeprazole made me feel so much worse.
Just be firm and honest with the gp and say you can't continue to live like this and that's it's affecting every part of your life. They should refer to gastro as well as ENT to properly determine what the problem actually is.

Proudnana3 · 23/08/2020 15:03

I’ve also tried to read as much as I can on lpr and it does seem it can take a long time for you’re throat to heal and that gaviscon advance is the best treatment, my ent doc told me to take lansoprazole for 3 months and gaviscon advance as well for the first month, I’m still taking the gaviscon before bed though now 7 weeks on. I would tell you’re gp that you want to be referred back as you are doing everything advices and there is no improvement. Stopping and starting the meds though will not help it does need to be a continuous treatment until it’s resolved. Unfortunately some gp’s do not understand lpr too well, there is so much information online and it all says the same, aggressive treatment along with lifestyle changes for at least 3 months sometimes 6. Having said that if I’m still feeling it after 3 months I will be going back to my gp for another referral as that is what I was told to do.

CambsAlways · 23/08/2020 15:48

What’s lpr anyone

Proudnana3 · 23/08/2020 15:52

Laryngopharyngeal reflux basically silent reflux

OhWhatAPalaver · 23/08/2020 16:34

@Proudnana3 I agree stopping and starting meds isn't great but I was waking in the night with excruciating abdominal pain from trapped wind and bloating with omeprazole. It was horrible. I had lansoprozole last time and that seemed better so might ask for that next or maybe try h2 blocker.

JackieJormpJormp4 · 23/08/2020 16:42

I've also had this since December, it's been awful. I've ended up in a&e several times with crippling heartburn too. Have they tested you for h pylori? This is a blood, breath or stool test which needs to be done when you are off PPIs. You should push for a referral to gastro, as they can arrange an endoscopy (it sounds like you've already had a nasal camera with ent?). Small meals throughout the day help. I found going onto an liquid only diet (complan) helped kick start the healing of my throat and I've been slightly better the last couple of weeks, PPIs and Gaviscon weirdly made me feel worse possibly which is strange as I have a hiatal hernia so in theory these should work. Hope you make some progress with GP.

JackieJormpJormp4 · 23/08/2020 16:45

Yeah, starting and stopping the PPIs can cause some 'rebound reflux' where your acid production kicks back in too much, this makes it hard to get off them.

SpideyMom · 23/08/2020 16:54

Omg since December. Ive had it since March and its unbearable

Does anybody find that the globus sensation is worse before your period?

OhWhatAPalaver · 25/08/2020 22:15

I have globus back yesterday and today and I'm due on but I've also stopped meds so could well be either. Also had some diet slip ups so could also be that. Getting so sick of not being able to eat what I want. I desperately need to gain weight and I'm just losing it on this low acid diet. I can't seem to eat enough and I'm always hungry Sad

SpideyMom · 29/08/2020 08:48

How is everyone feeling

OP posts:
SpideyMom · 29/08/2020 09:22

I've had a dreadful 2 weeks. Honestly its been awful. My throats been shocking and I picked up a nasty cold so struggling to breathe and feeling of choking has been on another level. Paired with some personal things ive found things so hard.

The doctor is finally referring me for a camera into my stomach now.

In desperation to get some understanding on how crap things are going in my life lately I had a video tarot reading yesterday. I know many dont believe but ive had a few and they have always been surprisingly accurate. Anyway I was so desperate to try and understand my current life I had one yesterday afternoon. She was so bloody accurate on my situation which has been affecting me most lately. But at the very end she got onto my health. She somehow knew my concerns were with my throat and said she doesn't get the feeling I need to be worried and should he able to get to the point of having no medication at all. She told me to read up on chakras, more so the throat chakra and learn ways to release energy better etc. But i must say that was a relief in itself.

So today I plant to start learning about the chakras in my body. I also went to sleep to some meditation and it was the best night's sleep ive had in such a long time

OP posts:
Asterope · 29/08/2020 09:33

Ooh @SpideyMom will you let us know what you find out about throat chakras that might be useful?

I'm the same: still struggling with globus, very anxious. Referral to ENT still not here and taking an age, but when it arrives my anxiety will be through the roof even more!

I have read that globus can be caused by strained/tight neck muscles so I'm going to see an osteopath. I have discomfort on the left front side of my neck so I'm hoping this will help. Will update!

SpideyMom · 29/08/2020 09:45

Yes of course.

I went out and brought a book from the works. I flicked through it last night and its phenomenal how easily I was able to identify with what I was reading. Im going to read it properly today as I am willing to try everything now.

I also gave in to sudafed for the sinuses. Oh god the feeling is no where near as intense today. Being full of cold was sending me over the edge that I've had a few panic attacks this week.

Im sorry you are still struggling. Ive said before the only thing that's keeping my anxiety at bay is that so many people are currently dealing with this. And i feel for everyone. Not only on here. So many people I know have been dealing with the same. So this is very common at the moment

OP, I had similar symptoms, but with more heartburn in addition. I went private and got the endoscopy and Professor did a biopsy. Turned out I had Helicobacter Pylori. I call it HP. Look it up. Horrible bacterial infection in stomach. Caused me all sorts of problems and took about two years to get my body back in good shape. Maybe ask for a biopsy to rule out HP?

There is a great resource called H. Pylori Support Group on FB. You can even look there under their 'Topics' section and check your symptoms with others.

SpideyMom · 29/08/2020 10:07

Would HP show up in the blood though?

OP posts:
DeliaOwens · 29/08/2020 10:59

My Prof said that the very best and most reliable way to detect HP is via biopsy. However, there are also breath and stool tests which can be indicative of HP if your GP does not want the cost of a biopsy. -but you said you are having one right, or did I misunderstand that?
Blood test analysis is not good at detecting HP and Lab Tech has to know/be directed to look for and test for it. Because the bacteria is in the stomach, evidence in the blood is minuscule and it can very hit and miss.

If I were you I would insist they test at time of endoscopy (they are in there anyway, why not?)
