Feels like something is stuck in my throat

Help? I'm really fed up now. It's been 4 weeks of feeling like this. Literally feels like something is stuck in my throat. I tend to need to burp slot. I've been treated for acid reflux and it's still here and driving me mad. And to be honest really starting to worry me. Could it be hayfever? Though piriton is having no affect on me either. I've never had hayfever before but I have no other symptoms if it is.

Any tips or advice?

Thanks in advance

Yes I do occasionally. My GP surgery won't see patients so you will probably be referred to the ENT. That's what happened with me. But it took from April until End of June as medication has to be tried first

I get an achey sore throat too @OhWhatAPalaver Sad

LeslieYep · 05/08/2020 08:12

Okay, firstly I have no medical training whatsoever, but I've just read through your posts.
I'm so sorry you're feeling this way.

One thing you said was that it started in march? At lockdown?
This made me think that there might be something in your house that's causing it.
You feel okay at work because you're busy, but could it be because you're not at home?

Is there a pattern to it? If you stay away from home for any length of time, does it change?

It could be something you're breathing in while you're at home that's making it worse throughout the day, but perhaps your bedroom is clearer/aired out more, I don't know. I thought this could be worth a thought.

OhWhatAPalaver · 05/08/2020 09:07

Thanks for the reassurance. It's slightly better this morning but not gone. I think I will just have to insist on being referred as the gp has put it off twice now. It's so frustrating. I'll give the omeprazole a couple of weeks and see how it goes. My mum has gord problems and now has a permanent cough and a pharyngeal web in her throat because it got so bad and wasn't treated properly. I really don't want it to get to that point.

SRK16 · 05/08/2020 09:17

Just read your thread. Sorry you’re experiencing this. I really think you should get a referral for talking therapy (CBT). In most areas you can self refer and don’t need your gp to do it. It sounds like you do have real physical symptoms, but that your anxiety about them is exacerbating it. You’ve said in a couple of posts that you’ve been okay at work or when you’re busy, but then when you get home it’s terrible- because you’re focusing on your body and the sensation in your throat and over thinking. The dry mouth and nausea are common symptoms of high anxiety and may not only be related to your throat problem.
There’s some information here that would be worth looking at www.getselfhelp.co.uk/healthanxiety.htm

Proudnana3 · 05/08/2020 10:34

Such an interesting read SRK16 I truly believe that is my problem, spent so long worrying about it before I got seen by ENT that now I can’t stop focusing on how my throat feels. Even though I’ve been diagnosed with silent reflux I think I’m making my symptoms worse concentrating on how it feels all the time. It never bothers me during the night and it is never there when I wake up only after when I’m thinking about it feels all the time. Also it disappears after a single glass of wine 🤷‍♀️I did the same thing many years ago with my bladder had every test going and was finally put down to my mind doing it all.

OhWhatAPalaver · 07/08/2020 20:10

Ugh, mine has been really annoying these last two nights. Feels like my throat is really tight and uncomfortable almost immediately after I've eaten my evening meal. Partner made a pretty bland veg bake but it did have shallots and garlic in it. Does anyone else have issues with onions or garlic? I might have to get that reflux book that a pp recommended. It's getting really frustrating now.
How long does omeprazole take to have an effect?

Asterope · 07/08/2020 21:18

@OhWhatAPalaver onion and garlic are one of the major triggers for reflux. I've been doing a lot of reading around LPR, it seems to fit with a lot of your symptoms. Have a look at The Acid Watchers Diet or Dropping Acid. Both aimed at the American market but still useful for foods to cut out. My main issue is cutting out coffee and wine :-(

OhWhatAPalaver · 08/08/2020 07:34

Thanks @Asterope I'll check those out. I've already cut coffee and replaced it with Whole Earth no caff chicory drink. Even my partner has switched to it, it's so nice. Apparently spirits are also really bad for reflux and although i don't drink much, I do like the odd rum and ginger. I'm almost vegan so onion and garlic are the basis of pretty much everything I eat. That's going to be really difficult to cut those out but I'll have to try. Can't keep having my throat feeling like this.

Asterope · 08/08/2020 07:57

I've switched to the whole earth too! It's so good in almond milk. I've cut tomatoes, citrus, onions, garlic. Am trying to cut caffeine completely but have had horrendous withdrawal headaches so have reduced to one cup of normal tea in the morning that I'll gradually wean off. The hard one for me is wine: I'm only have it at the weekend but I know I need to cut that too. Problem is, I'm so stressed at the moment that I really enjoy it when I have it!

OhWhatAPalaver · 08/08/2020 21:17

We have it with oat milk, it's lovely.
I made sure I didn't have garlic or onions today and it is noticeably less horrible but still there. I'm going to have to find a no garlic hummus recipe I think. I can'tllive without hummus.
I know what you mean about being stressed. I just want to eat mountains of chocolate but that's a definite no no as well.

SpideyMom · 13/08/2020 21:13

I can't take this anymore. Its like my mouth is making no saliva. Diet and lifestyle changes have done fuck all, excuse my language. And I cant get into the doctors at all now!

I dont get it. This is the best I've felt in such a long time with my life etc. And I dont quite know how its happened but I've met this guy and I actually have the butterflies again. Its been 5 years since I've felt that towards someone. But I desperately want this feeling to go away as its still there in my throat. The last 3 days has been dreadful.

My mouth and throat are so so dry and no amount of fluids is making it better

OP posts:
OhWhatAPalaver · 14/08/2020 14:10

My sympathies @SpideyMom. It's crap isn't it. I don't have the dry mouth/throat all day but it's there in the morning. It's the constant lump / something stuck feeling that does my head in. Have you had bloods to check if you're deficient in any vits/minerals?

SpideyMom · 14/08/2020 14:17

Yes.

I've actually had a video call with the doctor today. She is going to try treating me for oral thrush. I have no idea how that's come around but apparently the appearance on my mouth and tongue and ongoing symptoms also lead that way. We will see. I just hope i get some relief soon.

We got onto it being anxiety and stress but i said its the best I've felt in so long with myself and life

OP posts:
OhWhatAPalaver · 15/08/2020 07:41

That's interesting, hope you get some relief.

My Dr just told me to double up on the omeprazole, which so far has done bugger all to help. She said if no change in two weeks then I can have a face to face appointment. I'm not entirely sure why I'd need a face to face appointment just to be referred to gastro/ENT though. Seems they really don't want to refer people atm.

SpideyMom · 15/08/2020 09:01

Its unbearable. The pharmacist has questioned if its viral in my tonsils and my body cant just get rid of of.

Its making me so miserable now though

OP posts:
OhWhatAPalaver · 21/08/2020 10:43

Hello again everyone. How are we all doing? I'm just wondering if anyone found omeprazole to be counter productive? Been on it 3 weeks and pretty sure it's just giving me awful wind and bloating and not doing much else...
I've done quite a bit of reading in to reflux now and pretty sure I have LPR. Has anyone found omeprazole to help with lpr or do I need a different approach? I've reduced acid in my diet, cut out citrus, tomatoes, onion, garlic and spices. Raised thd head of my bed. The lump in the throat feeling is slightly better but now I have terrible heartburn all the time. At my wits end with this now.

SpideyMom · 21/08/2020 11:17

im fed up now. NOTHING is making me feel better, My mouth is so dry and all medication has now been stopped as its not helping. I have pain from my sternum to my belly button, and my mouth is so dry its hard to swallow.
Had a battle with 111, the nurse was so rude. It was silly me calling as I know they cant really do anything but I was hoping they could advise me how to proceed. She was so rude and basically said the camera up the nose is the best thing you have been given so not other tests will be granted.

Quite frankly I feel shit

Hi i just wrote a post about acid reflux have a read and see if you have similar symptoms? The title is acid reflux and anxiety.

squanderedcore · 21/08/2020 12:02

Sorry op haven't read the whole thread but have you had your sugar levels tested? I am NOT an HCP but dry mouth and oral thrush can be a sign of diabetes.

SpideyMom · 21/08/2020 12:12

no i haven't. I had bloods back in may and I was told everything is ok

OP posts:
OhWhatAPalaver · 21/08/2020 16:52

Sorry to hear you're still feeling crap @SpideyMom.
I would demand more tests from your gp. You can't carry on like this. I nearly lost my head this morning with the meds making my stomach feel awful and feeling like my throat /chest is on fire. I've since calmed down and instead of moaning about what I can't eat I'm trying to think about what I can eat and come up with some new recipes.

SpideyMom · 21/08/2020 17:56

My GP won't do anymore. I dont know what more I can do

OP posts:
SpideyMom · 22/08/2020 14:48

Excuse my language but I am losing the fucking will. The back of my throat feels like its seized up. I have pain in my face, nose, ears, chest. It hurts to swallow and is taking my breath away.
I'm so scared this is getting worse and not better. I need the inside of my mouth examined again but am getting nowhere.
This is unbearable

What medication are you on?
Could it be a side effect?
