Feels like something is stuck in my throat

Help? I'm really fed up now. It's been 4 weeks of feeling like this. Literally feels like something is stuck in my throat. I tend to need to burp slot. I've been treated for acid reflux and it's still here and driving me mad. And to be honest really starting to worry me. Could it be hayfever? Though piriton is having no affect on me either. I've never had hayfever before but I have no other symptoms if it is.

Any tips or advice?

Thanks in advance

I've occasionally had pain lower thats been very uncomfortable, but considering I've had this feeling now since March, the abdominal pain has been very rare really. In fact I'd say overall I've been in very little pain altogether. Thank god!
This is what i cant get my head around but i am telling myself nothing is there.

When I had the camera at the end of June I was so happy when he said there was no lump. I thought that would be the end for me or at least start feeling an improvement. I got no more than 2 days on and the feeling has been worse than ever, which I am gutted about.
I've changed my diet, drinking more water, taking my medication, taking Gaviscon Advance, im sleeping upright a little, and I'm exercising. Ive settled back into work really well, my son is happy and settled, I do not feel like i am worrying about anything (maybe I am but nothing obvious is causing me to worry). But then I suppose this persisting is the problem in itself. But its worse than what it was before the camera.

I'm genuinely gutted this is still ongoing. I cannot wait for the day I no longer feel it

I get that when I’m super anxious or stressed! I drink a lot of water to help!

Ellapaella · 15/07/2020 20:10

Have you heard of globus sensation OP? I had similar back in 2013, went on for ages and I also had a tube down my throat to check etc. Globus sensation was the diagnosis I got from ENT and they said it was related to anxiety (I was having CBT for anxiety at the time). It lasted for a long time but faded away eventually after about 9 months.

Ellapaella · 15/07/2020 20:11

Also it can be related to silent reflux I think.

Ellapaella · 15/07/2020 20:13

Sorry I see that you have already mentioned globus sensation. Apologies.

SpideyMom · 15/07/2020 21:45

Its OK. Yes the doctor who did the camera said its a bit of reflux, but spoke mostly about Globus. I have periods of this before. But never lasted anywhere near this long. A few weeks at most. This has been months.
My GP won't give me anything for anxiety and has told me to try natural methods. I dont blame him in a way as I'd only be taking anxiety medication in a hope it would stop me feeling this in my throat. Ive had to be medicated before due to my anxiety but that was because I was really bad with it.

Also meant to say, Gaviscon Advanced isn't doing anything for me. I know nothing is there but it feels like its coating the area where I feel this thing in my throat. Which I know is impossible as there is no lump there.

Its a new day tomorrow. Fingers crossed

So its getting worse. I think im going to have to give in and call the GP tomorrow. Of an evening it is like my throat is closing up. The sensation has changed when I am swallowing. Its taking my breath away

OverTheRainbow88 · 16/07/2020 20:33

Yes defo call the GP, that’s what they are there for. Hope you manage to get a good nights sleep.

SpideyMom · 16/07/2020 20:52

I've broke tonight and really cried over it. I was convinced after the camera it would get better. Life is going much better at the moment so i cant see a reason for me worrying. It feels like my throat is narrowing and when I swallow its not going down. It just stops

You can be subconsciously anxious. You sound anxious as you are worrying about not being about to swollow. They’ve checked your throat, it is ok, you can swollow. I get that feeling when I’m terrified on a flight, sip water it will Show you you can swallow. Read a good book-
Distraction is good. You are fine 😊

Autumn101 · 17/07/2020 06:28

I’m so sorry you’re still struggling Spidey, definitely ring the GP today to get some advice.

I had a couple of better days but then it’s back full on. Constant feeling of cotton wool stuck in my throat and worse after I eat. It’s miserable! Sometimes it’s like my whole throat and tongue and roof of mouth have pins and needles, not painful but so uncomfy.

My sister checked me over and still thinks it’s related to my thyroid problem as well as reflux - my neck is still a little inflamed. Apparently thyroid can also cause this type of feeling.......

It’s so depressing, I’ve always been so healthy, never needing doctors and I just don’t recognize myself over the last few months! Constant doctors and issues arising (I also have a complex ovarian cyst and signs of endometriosis which I’m waiting for a referral and it will likely need removing 🙄 picked up by a ultrasound that was just to check my stomach/gallbladder). I feel so down about it, all these health issues coupled with the pandemic and now moving back to UK without DH - it’s like a nightmare and I’m exhausted by it all.

Sorry that was a right moan, I do have a lot to be thankful for and positive about but someday are so tough

Let us know how you get on and have everything crossed for some relief for you x

It really is so uncomfortable. My GP is still telephone appointments only but I nearly ended up bursting in to tears at the receptionist, poor girl. The first question she asked is if I feel any pain and I said no, but I explained from having the camera 3 weeks ago its got worse to the point when I swallow, I have to catch my breath. Its actually got worse. Ive explained how ive taken all sorts of medicines, im sleeping better, exercising and diet change but its so much worse now. I said I know nothing is there and I'm an telling myself that every day but I just don't know what the next step is now or if there is even a next step. If it hadn't of become worse I would have just got on with things, but now its making me catch my breath i can't just wait around

Sorry you're having a hard time too @autumn101 what does your sister say about it?

JacobReesMogadishu · 17/07/2020 08:37

If you think anxiety is playing a part can you ask for a CBT referral?

SpideyMom · 17/07/2020 08:49

I've had CBT a few times before. I've never felt its helped longterm unfortunately. Im going to see what the doctor says later. Just because I'm saying I don't feel anxious, I know it is likely going to be anxiety related but this is the best I've felt in a long time. I think because I've had some really horrendous battles with my anxiety over the years and how I currently feel is not even close to how bad I was back then with worry, I find it hard to believe I am worrying. The only thing that's making me worry is this.

This sounds really grim, it’s incredibly irritating when you feel like you do and nothing seems to help.

If you feel like you can’t swallow try gargling instead, do it repeatedly with several mouthfuls. The anti-histamine you’ve been taking, did you try a few different types? Might be worth a try, it would calm down your feeling of irritation. Even sucking the medicated throat sweet might soothe a bit?

I agree that you need to find some relaxation/distraction techniques, they can work really well for people with ongoing health problems and pain. If you’re feeling like no-one is helping then at least it’s a way of doing something.

ThickFast · 17/07/2020 09:04

I know someone who had this. Turned out they had lactose intolerance exacerbated by undiagnosed coeliac. Have you been tested for a thing like that?

SpideyMom · 17/07/2020 09:42

something I have noticed is that my mouth and throat feel incredibly dry despite the increased amount of water I am drinking. Even after drinking I cant shift the dry feeling. In bed last night it was worse than ever. No amount of water was shifting the dry feeling.

Last year I developed a bowel issue, which I put down to lactose, however I didn't cut it out completely. It was cows milk that was causing me alot of problems. Though I am not totally strict and do have the odd bit of lactose products, the majority I eat/drink are lactose free. Coeliac was ruled out last year.
My recent bloods (May) were fine and every time i speak to the doctors they say my bloods are absolutley fine. But I do not feel fine

OP posts:
SpideyMom · 17/07/2020 09:43

ive tried piriton, loratadine, cetirizine and fexofenadine

Autumn101 · 17/07/2020 10:20

The dry throat and mouth I had while taking the PPIs - no amount of water helped!

Don’t have it on the H2s

My sister thinks it’s a perfect storm of ailments - stress/anxiety, thyroid and reflux combined. I’m doing all the right things regarding diet so it’s just a case of riding it out........ That in itself makes me more stressed I think!

Proudnana3 · 17/07/2020 11:26

Sorry you’re still suffering spideymom, I too have really looked at what I eat and am doing everything I can, some days it’s hardly there but always a little niggle of mucus in my throat but that’s probably normal for most but other times it feels all mushy in my throat. I spoke to a doctor friend yesterday who said reflux is very obvious when they do a scope down you’re throat so that’s defiantly what it will be, his advice was avoid anything spicy, keep a healthy weight as I have put on a few pounds over lockdown, relax, take the medication and give it time, also he said be happy you don’t have all the other symptoms such as heartburn and the discomfort in you’re stomach as that is really awful. I am still taking the Amitriptyline but want to come of that slowly as think that causes dryness, a little worried I might become over anxious again though when I do. The common thing everyone seems to say on here is that it does take time and it’s no quick fix, I suppose that’s the reasons we have been given 3 months of meds. Let’s hope soon we will be symptom free and able to give others reassurance and advice

ThickFast · 17/07/2020 14:55

It sounds dreadful. Good you’ve had coeliac ruled out.

SpideyMom · 17/07/2020 17:59

So the doctor is clearly fed up with me. Its a case of persevering with the Gaviscon Advance which I cant even afford right now until the end of the month, and speaking to the wellbeing team

Hiya. Thought I'd update.

So, Saturday night until Sunday afternoon I was very sick. I haven't been that sick in years. I felt bloody horrendous. So imagine how delighted I was when i managed to get some sleep and I woke up and felt nothing. Absolutely nothing in my throat. The hours went on and I continued to feel nothing. I was so happy. Sadly, Ive woke up this morning and its back. Bloody hell :-(
