For anyone who wants a boost to their general health. The suggested goals are:

EAT 10 PORTIONS OF FRUIT AND VEGETABLES EVERY DAY - if you don't usually eat much fruit and veg I would build up gradually or you could upset your digestion.

DO (AT LEAST) 10 MINUTES OF EXERCISE EVERY DAY - can be yoga, stretching or something more energetic. The plan is that the idea of doing 10 minutes is not too daunting, and having started you may well find you want to do more.

There are no restrictions on what you eat so long as you get your 10 fruit and veg as well. The focus is not on weight loss but on improving our energy levels and hopefully our general mood and well-being. Sign up below and post here to tell us how you're getting on and how you are feeling.

Basic guidance on what constitutes a portion of fruit and veg here and you can download more detailed information by following the link at the very bottom of the page

Franny - As far as I know it kick starts the metabolism and helps to clear out toxins, I think warm is better than hot, again, not sure why. I often have it while making breakfast but then I often have a normal cup of tea and drink lemon water during the day. My ds is old enought to bring me one now though, joy of joys.

Tatties - Roisin?

Possum - It is Montezumas choc and can be bought in most health food shops I think. Get your tissues ready.

SaggyPossum · 20/08/2007 21:46

God help DS and DH, the methane around here is enough to power my local substation thanks to 10/10 boot camp compliance.

SaggyPossum · 20/08/2007 21:49

oh, TooTicky, if you have a mo', could you e-mail me on

I'd really like to ask you a bit more about homeopathy but I realise it is something of a fraught subject on MN

OMFG, if that really is still available, then I am over the moon with joy. That's all I require for DS right now. BUT maybe it is the adult tetanus which children can have from age ten onwards. Will have to check. If it is the infant tetanus then I am amazed as I thought the government had prohibited its import.
Thank you, thankyou, thankyou, if I knew you in RL I'd send you a huge batch of 'crying chocolate' in the post.
The EC thing, I fear I've left too late. I was such a mess getting DS accustomed to the plaster casts and then the bloody boots for 23 hours a day, and then the mysterious rashes that came and went on his legs, trunk, groin, face...EC seemed like one call on my patience too far at the time. Now I bitterly regret that decision.

Oh my god, I can't keep up with you all on this thread, or bootcamp . Loving these threads at the minute, although no time to contribute much at moment.

Think Boco is an Astrid, Avi is Katherine, Greeny is Susan, TooTicky - Geraldine, 100x - Jane, Mrs C - Lucy, Tranquila - Liz, Franny is Franny of course!

It's funny that everyone here os is so keen on the gym. I always think more au naturel types are more into the 'be active in what you do' sort of thinking that being into the relative fakeness of the gym. Does that make sense?

I am in no way dissing your gym efforts, Franny, oh no, I am impressed. I do not have such an opinion on the gym but I know a few who have. How do you resolve the 'plastic' aspect of it?

No I do know what you mean MrsC

I don't have meaningful physical work to do in my life atm, nor have I found it especially enjoyable when I have I do enjoy cycling and walking, but I am can focus on specific results at the gym that I can't / don't get in my everyday life. I can do cardio work at exactly the intensity that I want to (out cycling I am hindered by the roads, traffic, etc, and I am not a runner) and I can work with weights to actually change the shape of my body to some extent. It's very plastic, but I enjoy the control. Also, I think working out for a discrete period gives you a great endorphin rush (have to get your kicks where you can find them, these days) whereas being active just makes you healthy.

OP posts:
FrannyandZooey · 20/08/2007 22:22

ANYWAY

I did 7 mins on the cross-trainer and 10 mins on the bike doing intervals, followed by 13 mins on the bike just free pacing. On the weights I did 2 chest type machines, then ball squats with a lateral raise, and lots of stomach and back exercises.

Feel great, still feeling the endorphins now [blissed out]

FrayedKnot · 20/08/2007 22:25

I used to go to the gym before I had DS, worked full-time and had the money for a very plastic gym that cost a bomb.

Now I have a grubby rowing machine inherited from my sister (no kids, expensive gym membership) in teh corner of my spare room.

I find that kind of exercise is a great de-tensioner.

I would go running but I have a gammy foot and cannot run, so rowing is a good exercise for me. It lowers my shoulders when they are hunched round my ears after a stressful day.

What I did for a while and am desperate to get back into is yoga, but procrastination about where & when is holding me back.

FrannyandZooey · 20/08/2007 22:29

Oops wombling you snuck in when I was not looking! Great day there, keep it up.

Yes FrayedKnot I think the need to release tension inspired me tonight. I normally dislike the cardio and shuffle through 20 mins or so, but I would have continued tonight if it wasn't for the fact it was getting late and dp was waiting for me to get back, so we could eat

TooTicky · 20/08/2007 22:36

Avi, I'm with you on gyms. At our local swimming pool, they kindly put the gym people in full view so those being driven slowly insane by not actually being able to swim due to helping dcs can have a quick snurk to cheer themselves up

Possum - will do

DollyPopsOut · 20/08/2007 22:39

Am very impressed by all those who have gymmed / have gym equipment in the house. I had one of those sit up arc type things in the 90s which was useful when the clothes horse became overful. Now, I just walk with the double buggy. For miles. In all weathers. And I love it (99% of the time. Also means that I get exercise without having to do it. If I waited until the kids were in bed, I'd never go as the lure of the sofa / wine bottle would be too much.

It's very cold here. Almost had to put the heating on ! Possum , could do with converting some of that methane

Boco · 20/08/2007 22:51

I've never been to a gym before. Ever. I'm afraid to now, i've left it too late and now i'm scared. I walk alot though. And run a bit sometimes, but not as much as i should.

I did bring up the bath thing - I said something like 'oh, it was funny, K kept saying how she'd been in the bath with all her clothes on, and dd1 just couldn't believe it'. Her mum looked embarrassed and said 'errr, no, don't know where she gets these things from' and then went a bit quiet and thoughtful. I reckon the dad did it, and it was probably just once. He's very much a head of the house type of dad.

I have had
Asparagus
baby corn
red pepper
courgette
onion
loads of raspberries
banana
plums
grapes

That's 9/10. Hooray. I could have an apple, but i'm too tired for all the chewing.

I like Astrid, that's a good name. Astrid Lindgren, she was good.

TooTicky · 20/08/2007 22:55

Well done for mentioning the bath thing Boco.

Ooh, are you an Astrid Lindgren fan? I am, very much so.
