For anyone who wants a boost to their general health. The suggested goals are:

EAT 10 PORTIONS OF FRUIT AND VEGETABLES EVERY DAY - if you don't usually eat much fruit and veg I would build up gradually or you could upset your digestion.

DO (AT LEAST) 10 MINUTES OF EXERCISE EVERY DAY - can be yoga, stretching or something more energetic. The plan is that the idea of doing 10 minutes is not too daunting, and having started you may well find you want to do more.

There are no restrictions on what you eat so long as you get your 10 fruit and veg as well. The focus is not on weight loss but on improving our energy levels and hopefully our general mood and well-being. Sign up below and post here to tell us how you're getting on and how you are feeling.

Basic guidance on what constitutes a portion of fruit and veg here and you can download more detailed information by following the link at the very bottom of the page

well, the prickling didn't worsen but I was aware of it, and I have to go to my mother's this morning, her labrador will set me off too.
I am also armed with a poster from the GP so she will believe me that it's not fine for her to smoke i the kitchen while we're there, even if she blows it in the general direction of an open window

Nectarine so far, but I will be having an almond and berry smoothie in the green grocers in a minute after school.

lovely day.

Lullabyloo · 10/07/2007 09:28

Toot...the pink paint story made me .....awwwwwwwwww

have had my famous avocado, carrot, lemon, apple & BASIL smoothie.......& buckwheat, lemon & ginger porridge & some raspberries.

FrannyandZooey · 10/07/2007 10:49

Woohoo at all these including the now infamous basil one

MrsC I hope you feel better and that your dm gets the message. I guess she smoked when you were a child, too? Do you connect any of your health problems with her smoking?

Lullaby will email you

Oh TooTicky the Playmobil people arrived! How fantastically quick, thank you. I have not opened them yet, as the inside bundle looked so exciting I thought it would be nice for ds to do it. I will save them for when he is driving me up the wall, erm, I mean, when he needs a little stimulus for child-led imaginative play in the holidays, so don't worry if you don't hear how wonderful they are, for a while.

LL, I must try that smoothie when I have all the ingredients. And I am of your porridge. Did you use whole buckwheat?
Franny, have replied

TooTicky · 10/07/2007 13:07

MrsC, almond and berry smoothie?

Lullabyloo · 10/07/2007 13:09

almond & berry smoothie sounds delicious

Toot...buckwheat groats

TooTicky · 10/07/2007 13:13

Do you soak them?

Lullabyloo · 10/07/2007 13:16

No....just put buckwheat in a pan with juice & zest of a lemon, some grated ginger & water..bring to boil & simmer for about 20/25 mins

FrannyandZooey · 10/07/2007 13:17

Can anyone help HC on her Gazpacho thread currently in recipes section?

OP posts:
TooTicky · 10/07/2007 13:18

NQC has posted her recipe on this thread, last week I think...

TooTicky · 10/07/2007 13:19

Thanks LL, I will try it.

MrsCarrot · 10/07/2007 16:32

She did smoke when I was younger, Franny, she would say never around us but again, she means she'd have a window open. Who knows if it resulted in any health problems, I became asthmatic and allergic at 12 or so, always had ear infections etc, could have been that but then people get those things whose parents don't smoke? I am very quick to blame her for everything though. I fell out of bed when I got up once and became convinced I had mad cow disease, I phoned her accusingly and she said we never had Happy Shopper burgers, always Birds Eye.

I phoned and instructed her not to smoke at least two hours before we arrived today. She asked me if I could look after the dog when she goes to Eastern Haze festival. Er, no, I am allergic to him remember? She says he could stay in the conservatory.

Rant over. I have had egg and practically a whole pot of cress on ryvita, new ones with pumpkin and oat? They are delicious. Rest of fattoush, radishes, cucumber tomatoes, dried apricots, dates, nectarine and apple. More acai red grape and mango smoothie but only one counts I think.

NotQuiteCockney · 10/07/2007 16:46

I am completely flattened.

Yesterday was just too much, and then I took DS1 to school today and then did a shift. I'm worn out and shouty and just exhausted.

Oh, and I haven't eaten much healthy, either. Um ... dried fruit in muesli. Maybe two servings of F+V at the co-op? Dinner will be burgers.

I am a bazillion hours behind on my charity 'work', very tired of it and eager for it to go away.

Did HC get the gazpatcho recipe she wanted?

MrsCarrot · 10/07/2007 16:49

thanks for fattoush recipe, NQC, not sure if remembered it right but it was delicious.

NotQuiteCockney · 10/07/2007 17:02

I'm glad you liked it - we really love that salad here.

Lullabyloo · 10/07/2007 18:50

mrs c...i grew up in a house with four smokers
so vile.............
now we have new neighbours downstairs with 3 teenage sons & all of tthem smoke.......some mornings I wake up & feel almost hysterical as it's as bad as if they're smoking in my flat
I so dont want ds to be subjected to what I had to put up with for the first 18 yrs of my life..

have had lentil soup & haricot bean salad with celery, red pepper, spring onion, lettuce, tomato, cucumber, beetroot, sunflower seeds

supper is roast aubergine & mushrooms with red onion ,garlic & fennel & green salad

Lullabyloo · 10/07/2007 18:50

anyone have a no sugar carrot cake recipe?????

TooTicky · 10/07/2007 19:03

I made one up t'other day LL, but it did have a little maple syrup in. Very nice though.
I have just made a calendula cake, but it did have some sugar in.

NQC, your co-op sounds good. Is it lentilly at all?

Not eating much, just baking and being shouted at.

Boco · 10/07/2007 19:03

Have had raspberries, strawberries, grapes and banana for breakfast, green salad for lunch, having pasta with vegetables and more salad for dinner.

Had a nice day with my oldest friend who came for the day - she lives in manchester so only see her a couple of times a day. We went out for lunch and sat in the garden. Then the head teacher of dds school called to say dd had upset tummy on school trip and could i fetch her.

Was funny. 3 mum helpers with rubber gloves on, standing over poor dd weeping on the loo. God knows why they needed the gloves, they weren't doing anything. They put her in a huge dress, she's tiny - it came down to her ankles. She's sleeping on the sofa.

MrsC saw your post about smoking. My parents were both heavy heavy smokers when i was growing up. I've got really bad asthma, supposed to be taking steroids for ever (but don't)

TooTicky · 10/07/2007 19:09

My dp smokes. Supposedly by the open back door so that all the smoke goes out but of course it doesn't. And I find ash on the floor inside and fag ends by the computer sometimes. I know that desperate feeling of not wanting to smell the horrid smoke again. And the worry. I'm an ex-smoker

Lullabyloo · 10/07/2007 19:29

i have horrid memories of going on holidays....long drives to cornwall with both parents smoking in the car...no windows open & the smell of my mother's perfume & polo's.............no wonder I was travel sick

NotQuiteCockney · 10/07/2007 19:30

The co-op is moderately lentilly. I mean, it's vegetarian (always has been) and is actually vegan right now, because of allergies. There's no TV.

But the food is a bit, ahem, varied. I've seen store-bought jam tarts rather more often than I'd like.

It's a lovely environment, though.

TooTicky · 10/07/2007 19:33

Such a good idea NQC.

NotQuiteCockney · 10/07/2007 19:55

Where are you TT? Probably best plan would be to visit us and have a look around.

The big problems, if you wanted to set one up are:

  • getting a nursery manager. This needs to be someone who can handle ofsted and so on. We didn't used to have one, but Ofsted has gotten more and more complicated
  • getting a venue
  • getting enough parents involved
MrsCarrot · 10/07/2007 19:55

Do you get lemon curd tarts too? I looked at lemon curd the other day, the duchy one is made with butter, so I looked at 'taste the finest' which was also butter. Bog standard looked a bit vile but no butter in then I looked at economy, no lemons!!

DH smokes every night too, always in the garden but he smells of it when he comes in and sometimes I can smell it in the house even when the door is closed, it has a particular aroma.

Dinner was leftover felafel, salmon with dill, cucumber and gherkin salad, purple sprouting broccoli and broad bean salad and tomatoes.

I am about to melt some maya gold over Booja Booja dairy free ice cream.
