For anyone who wants a boost to their general health. The suggested goals are:

EAT 10 PORTIONS OF FRUIT AND VEGETABLES EVERY DAY - if you don't usually eat much fruit and veg I would build up gradually or you could upset your digestion.

DO (AT LEAST) 10 MINUTES OF EXERCISE EVERY DAY - can be yoga, stretching or something more energetic. The plan is that the idea of doing 10 minutes is not too daunting, and having started you may well find you want to do more.

There are no restrictions on what you eat so long as you get your 10 fruit and veg as well. The focus is not on weight loss but on improving our energy levels and hopefully our general mood and well-being. Sign up below and post here to tell us how you're getting on and how you are feeling.

Basic guidance on what constitutes a portion of fruit and veg here and you can download more detailed information by following the link at the very bottom of the page

So salted peanuts don't count? What about chilli peanuts? Then could I count the chilli too?!

FrannyandZooey · 03/07/2007 21:52

We count all fruit and veg as defined by the link in OP, however prepared or eaten

this is primarily a thread about enjoying good food and and being active, we aren't going to quibble too much

3andnomore · 03/07/2007 22:02

sorry. I joimed the thread through another...not gonna squabble...tbh...am trying to work out things in my head for myself....to find the good and positive middleground,if that makes sense....and partly was tongue in cheek...no matter how serious I may come across (or anally retented, that is, lol)

FrannyandZooey · 03/07/2007 22:05

LOL I lied, we quibble ALL the time about whether nuts are vegetables, whether sweet potatoes are vegetables, whether soya milk is a vegetable, etc etc etc

did you see that link I posted to the Guardian article about fruit and veg consumption on the other thread 3and? I think you'd find it interesting.

Sorry Franny, I also had tongue in cheek a little. Going to bed now at 7 fruit and veg and about 20mins walk with the pram.
Will start concerted effort tomorrow and I'm pleased to have some motivation in the form of this thread. I'd been thinking about joining slimming world but my heart wasn't really in it, especially as I'm still bf. This way I'll just be healthier and probably loose weight by default.
Night all

FrannyandZooey · 03/07/2007 22:11

sorry I think from your reactions my post must have sounded a bit snotty

I must add MORE emoticons (wonders how this is humanly possible)

OP posts:
FrannyandZooey · 03/07/2007 22:13

Can everyone be v kind and encouraging to PSW (and 3andnomore if you are joining us? not sure by your posts if you are planning on it, but do if you would like to) tomorrow please, as I won't be around much

OP posts:
MrsCarrot · 03/07/2007 22:14

you didn't sound snotty, Franny, just a little, matronly

3andnomore · 03/07/2007 22:21

lol...you know how it is when you join a new thread, you gotta find your feed, and actually I think I will join the thread...it's been around for ages, I know...but don't know why I haven't looked n, ol!
and aviatrix...JV...Jason Vale the Juicemaster...one of my "gurus" if you may say...albeit, even I find him a bit extreme...am into exercising, trying for an hour a day if not more right now...well, sometimes it is less, of course, and do a mixture of Juicing and WW core plan...still going to ww meeting because I find the support of that group great, really nice people, etc...

Apple, pineapple, carrots, broccoli, can't remember what I ate at lunchtime. Oh yes I can, it was burnt toast with tartex. And some grapes. Not inspirational, but a complicated day. Ds1 home today with tummyache, ds2 came home late morning not feeling well, ate his lunch, then insisted I take him back.
Went to secondary school open evening, arrived on time, and dd1 shouted with joy, "Great! We're actually not late for something!"
Right, must go to bed. Definitely sleep-deprived atm.

FrannyandZooey · 04/07/2007 07:34

Sorry about ill children TooT - the comment reminds me of what ds said when we all went out on our bikes, with him on the back of my bike, for the first time.

"Hooray! We've survived! Thank goodness we're not all dead! Hooray!"

Ds is now playing "speed cameras"

3andnomore I think most of the posts on here are with tongue firmly in cheek so you are fine as you are

need new emoticon though

at your ds's comment. My poor ds2 yearns to get on the back of a bike again. I (rather foolishly but in desperation) bought a bike when I was about 6.5 months pg. We rode it back from the bike shop (4 or 5 miles by canal), took it out about once after that, then gave up. Have since sold it. I think I have lost my confidence, the unwieldy child seat was the last straw. Oh, and the fact that I had to have a bike that was too big for my short legs as it was the smallest that could take a child seat. My goodness, how I ramble! Right, must go and dress dcs. And me.

fillyjonk · 04/07/2007 07:47

oh gawd i do try to do this thread but the titles keep changing unexpectedly and i just cannot keep up

i am eating lots of fruit and lots of broccoli

am off to see if anyone has been talking to me about ethical living.

SauerKraut · 04/07/2007 07:52

It's better than what my kids are playing- see who can annoy the kittens the most! We have 5 of them until August and my goodness, I will be glad when they go- it's like a plague of rats!
I shall be having lots of nice fruit and veg shortly. Had pasta (wholemeal) with sauce, salad and steamed veggies last night, and didn't have room for any chocolate!

lol Franny at the [matronly emoticon]

so far had a galia melon, a few peaches, a Banana....and I am sure there will be more as the day goes on...planned dinner is Pasta with a kind of ratatouile on top ( Tomatoes, Peppers, Mushrooms ,Courgette and Onions), which I assume counts as 5 portions?

SauerKraut your name makes me shudder, lol....I can't stand Sauerkraut, the kind you eat now....unusual for a german I suppose, lol.

MrsCarrot · 04/07/2007 16:39

isn't sauerkraut an amazing health food? I heard something about it being recommended as a defense against bird flu not sure about that though.

Carrot cake, mmm, that was my namesake before marriage. I have made a dairy wheat free version but it was more like a biscuit. The icing was done with Toffutti and it was delicious.

Today, vegi sushi with nori, carrot, beetroot, peppers and spinach, also 3 nectarines, 1 banana and an apple. Supper will be tuna rice, with courgettes, spinach, red pepper, tomatoes, onion, garlic, coriander and carrots. Then maybe some cherries. I have walked a very long way today.

MrsCarrot · 04/07/2007 16:42

I am quite tempted to get dh to get chinese takeaway on the way home but I am hoping to resist this. I may or may not confess.

3andnomore · 04/07/2007 16:43

well, Sauerkraut is cabbage but it's sort of pickled....don't do pickled things...lol...

SauerKraut · 04/07/2007 16:48

It is meant to be a very good defence against jandies in general, and works wonders for your guts, apparently, but it's grosssssssss.
Even though they do it with cumin seeds and all sorts.
I'm SauerKraut not because of the stuff but because when we first came here I couldn't get to grips with the Swiss German dialect- will that help not to gross you out when I pop up?!
Thanks to motivational kick up the arse in the form of wise if unpunctuated words from Franny, I have had
banana, apple, lettuce, carrot, tomato, dates, as well as some wholefoods- borlotti bean spread and nuts, and comparatively speaking, little crap. Yay!

MrsCarrot · 04/07/2007 16:49

mmm, I have tried it before but don't LOVE it, I do like pickled things though. Gherkins with dill are delicious.

MrsCarrot · 04/07/2007 16:51

bugger, I meant to get dates in the grocers earlier, thanks for the reminder!

SauerKraut · 04/07/2007 16:51

And I will be having stracchino and rocket pizza tonight so that's another portion. Haven't read the whole carrot cake debate but in case it hasn't been mentioned, Delia does a mean one. Low fat too, and supposedly healthy. Dark, sticky and plenty of raisins. Yum.

3andnomore · 04/07/2007 16:53

lol SauerKraut...yeah the swiss german is difficult to understand....completely different to Hochdeutsch.

Hmmm dates...I love them....bought some nice ones at Holland and Barrets when on offer and they are sooo yummy...I love the caramelly taste of them....which reminds me I wanted to try out making ice cream wiht my masticating Juicer and appanrelty frozen Banana put through with some chopped up dates is meant to be delicious
