For anyone who wants a boost to their general health. The suggested goals are:

EAT 10 PORTIONS OF FRUIT AND VEGETABLES EVERY DAY - if you don't usually eat much fruit and veg I would build up gradually or you could upset your digestion.

DO (AT LEAST) 10 MINUTES OF EXERCISE EVERY DAY - can be yoga, stretching or something more energetic. The plan is that the idea of doing 10 minutes is not too daunting, and having started you may well find you want to do more.

There are no restrictions on what you eat so long as you get your 10 fruit and veg as well. The focus is not on weight loss but on improving our energy levels and hopefully our general mood and well-being. Sign up below and post here to tell us how you're getting on and how you are feeling.

Aviatrix am so glad you liked it! That one is a stand alone, although most of Salinger's other books are linked by the Glass Family (of which Franny and Zooey are two members). I would recommend reading F&Z next if you felt you were up for some more of him. Be warned though, F&Z probably makes Catcher look quite plot-driven

I say we...

...I had apple, banana, smoothie, tomato soup with carrot and potato bread, dried apricots, green beans, carrots, radish sprouts, coriander, cucumber, cougettes and cherries.

I am too full of toast for fruit this morning though.

I ate very badly yesterday

Just strawberries and raisins for me (and sandwiches and chips and noodles). Will try harder over the weekend - we have lots of lovely vegetables in.

I've been looking into raw food (not that I'd do 100% raw, I don't think, but would like to head a little that way) but am slightly disillusioned. Found a fairly full on website that said raw food is food that has not been heated to 116 degrees fahrenheit (apparently enzymes start to break down at 106). Consequently, a lot of their recipes involve dehydrating food on teflex sheets in a dehydrator for up to 24 hours
Seems a bit contrived to me - not to mention complicated. And they say that you save electricity as you are not cooking, but surely dehydrating things for umpteen hours would use quite a bit.
What does everybody else think?

I think I read about it in a magazine somewhere but can't think what it would have been - Juno, maybe?

It's not the dehydration that bothers me so much, it's the hassle of doing it. I mean, it's just low key cooking really, isn't it?

i am sure that they would be broken down by the acids in the stomach ANYWAY

why would you want plant enzymes ANYWAY? you have plenty of your own

This was interesting, from the vegan soc website: a suggested day's intake of raw food

Fruit: 100g red peppers, 200g tomatoes, 300g oranges, 200g apples, 500g bananas, 100g pears, 50g peaches, 50g raspberries, 200g kiwi fruit, 100g strawberries, 50g mangos.
Green leafy vegetables and broccoli: 200g lettuce, 100g kale, 100g spinach, 100g broccoli.
High-fat foods: 200g avocado, 30g almonds, 20g hazelnuts, 10g flaxseed, 3g Brazil nuts
Other: 100g carrots, 100g peas.

This provides 700 mg calcium, 700g magnesium, 9mg zinc, 50 g protein, 100µg selenium, 3 g omega-3 fatty acids, 8,000mg potassium, 1100µg folate, 2 mg vitamin B1, 2.4mg B2, 6mg B6, 1100mg vitamin C, 30mg vitamin E, 6000µg of vitamin A (from carotenoids) and about 1000µg vitamin K. It may be too high (80g) in fibre for some people, particularly the very old or the very young, and it contains arguably too little sodium (270mg). The iodine content may also be low, depending on the soil where the produce is grown.

The balance of fatty acids is excellent. The diet contains no cholesterol or trans-fats and just 4% of calories as saturated fat while providing 5% omega-6, 1.5% omega-3 and 18% monounsaturated fat. Intakes of carotenoids, vitamin C, folate, vitamin K, vitamin E, magnesium, selenium and potassium are all much higher than in conventional diets and can be expected to promote health. Zinc and protein intakes are adequate. The calcium content has been adjusted for the low availability of calcium from some of the foods, particularly spinach, and is probably adequate. Vitamin B12 and vitamin D must be addressed separately.

I don't think thats good for them either but i am not SURE....hmm...

I think Kettle Chips do a mesquite flavour (I could be wrong...)

Today has been better - I just made a fruit salad with strawberries, peach, pineapple, cherries and banana and shared it with DH. I had beans with brekkie - it sort of counts.

F&Z I made some of your banana cake (from the BLW blog) and it was a big hit with all at the house of contradiction. In fact I just got some reduced ripe bananas and I'm going to make some more!

copied and pasted from the site:

"Fab and Healthy Banana cake

4 oz self raising wholemeal flour
half tsp mixed spice
2 oz butter
3 oz raisins
8 oz banana
1 egg, beaten

Preheat oven to 180 / gm 4.

Mix flour and spice, rub in butter and stir in raisins. In a separate bowl, mash the banana and egg. Stir into the flour mixture and put into a well-greased tin (fills a small loaf tin I think or I usually double up the quantities and put it in an 8" circular cake tin). Turn oven down to GM 3 / 160 C and cook on the middle shelf for 1 hour or until cooked.

I usually cover it with a mixture of philadelphia cream cheese and fruit spread (about 2 parts cream cheese to one part fruit spread / jam). I blend them together in the liquidiser. However it is good just by itself as well."
