For anyone who wants a boost to their general health. The suggested goals are:

EAT 10 PORTIONS OF FRUIT AND VEGETABLES EVERY DAY - if you don't usually eat much fruit and veg I would build up gradually or you could upset your digestion.

DO (AT LEAST) 10 MINUTES OF EXERCISE EVERY DAY - can be yoga, stretching or something more energetic. The plan is that the idea of doing 10 minutes is not too daunting, and having started you may well find you want to do more.

There are no restrictions on what you eat so long as you get your 10 fruit and veg as well. The focus is not on weight loss but on improving our energy levels and hopefully our general mood and well-being. Sign up below and post here to tell us how you're getting on and how you are feeling.

Basic guidance on what constitutes a portion of fruit and veg here and you can download more detailed information if you follow the link at the very bottom of the page

Hey Franny, one of those raw chocolate thingies contains algae!
I think they look really interesting but too darn expensive!
Filly, just for you...and hoping you can put your rational and scientific slant on it...

What are Enzymes?
Enzymes assist in the digestion of foods. They are known to be the "Life-Force" and or "energy" of food

Why are Enzymes Important?
Enzymes are important because they assist in the digestion and absorption of food. If you eat food that is enzyme-less, your body will not get maximum utilization of the food. This causes toxicity in the body. (Can you guess why over 75% of Americans are overweight?)

Doesn't the acidic ph of the stomach destoy enzymes?
Viktorus Kulvinskas, one of the world's foremost and most experienced active researchers into enzyme nutrition has information showing then stomach acid merely deactivates food enzymes. The enzymes are then reactivated in the more alkaline small intestine. Many people who eat all raw foods, sense a world of healthful difference in our energy, digestion and connectedness with nature by eating enzyme-rich living foods. When we stopped eating cooked protein foods which require large secretions of stomach acid (which is not healthful for several reasons) our stomach doesn't produce much stomach acid. Many people who eat raw foods eat a low protein diet and are free from the stomach acid secretions and have much more energy and a lighter disposition.

Did you get all that?

fillyjonk · 09/06/2007 17:14

sorry, tick, am doing BIG at that

can break down my if you want but...

BIG on enzymes

I suppose i can't help but feel that they are TRYING TO SELL YOU SOMETHING

TooTicky · 09/06/2007 17:22

I'd like it if you broke down your as my science is crap

TooTicky · 09/06/2007 17:25

I think they are selling a book.
Here's the site.

fillyjonk · 09/06/2007 17:33

ok do need to look this up but bascially, iirc, enzymes are VERY senstive-they have a complex structure which is held in place with hydrogen bonds-and once they become denatured thats IT, really.

It HAS to be this shape so as to hold the reacting molecules in place. That is how enzymes work, they speed up reactions by holding the molecules in place and then doing more things. like a lock and key

They are sensitive to heat, I'd have thought to much lower ranges than that excerpt says, and also to acids.

tbh i don't know a vast amount here and will try to look stuff up and give you a better answer later but am having alarm bells rung

Mrscarrot · 09/06/2007 21:40

"I have never fallen in love with a sofa before without taking something illegal first"

wow, nothing here yesterday, today there's ann hour of posts to catch up with!

Fillyjonk/Aviatrix - I only managed 3 years with the OU, no discipline, good luck with your work!

Tooticky- The bread comes from my green grocers, local organic shop, it's like a small round ball and makes a change from rye bread. It's nice toasted with some olive oil and salt on with soup.

Lionhart- I've seen a bike on amazon for £59, it's in my basket, I mean to buy it once I read some reviews/compare price etc. Now all I have to do is get on it...

raspberry/cranberry smoothie, vegi sushi with raw cabbage, cucumber, peppers, radish sprouts for lunch, lentils with herbs and spinach and courgettes for dinner, strawberries.

Lots of running (holding bosoms) alongside dd learning to ride her bike in the graveyard. Not a pretty sight.

didn't finish the third year though, and only scraped by the others, got pregnant with dd and dropped out, managed to transfer the credits thankfully.

Went on to do much better, think I needed tutors and classes more regularly

TooTicky · 10/06/2007 07:14

MrsC, extreme at your local shop with interesting breads.

Hey everybody, I'm up EARLY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Okay, I'm usually up early, but not this early on a Sunday, and I'm only on puter 'cos waiting for dd2 to wee and dp had left it switched on (ungreen fool).

Oh god, have just found dd2 drinking water with cat hair in it - is this where the idea of hair of the dog came from? Neglectful people leaving drinks unattended...

TooTicky · 10/06/2007 07:16

Is the OU terribly expensive? Every so often I fancy doing a course of some kind, then think there's no way we could afford it.

FrannyandZooey · 10/06/2007 09:06

We are going to an open day at our organic box farm

it says BBQ, do you reckon there will be anything for veggies or just a hog roast etc? Oh god I hope there isn't a hog roast.
