For anyone who wants a boost to their general health. The suggested goals are:

EAT 10 PORTIONS OF FRUIT AND VEGETABLES EVERY DAY - if you don't usually eat much fruit and veg I would build up gradually or you could upset your digestion.

DO (AT LEAST) 10 MINUTES OF EXERCISE EVERY DAY - can be yoga, stretching or something more energetic. The plan is that the idea of doing 10 minutes is not too daunting, and having started you may well find you want to do more.

There are no restrictions on what you eat so long as you get your 10 fruit and veg as well. The focus is not on weight loss but on improving our energy levels and hopefully our general mood and well-being. Sign up below and post here to tell us how you're getting on and how you are feeling.

Basic guidance on what constitutes a portion of fruit and veg here and you can download more detailed information if you follow the link at the very bottom of the page

Cappuccino · 04/06/2007 09:24

have to admit I haven't been around because of my detox

I am finding 10 portions difficult when the only things I seem to be able to eat are carrots and greens

I can't have fruit or mushrooms or courgette or tomato or aubergine or peppers

if anyone has any other ideas I would be pleased to hear them

oh and broccoli makes me blow up like a balloon

FrannyandZooey · 04/06/2007 09:24

I have had strawberries, peaches, pear, and raisins for breakfast and am feeling superlatively well after recent crapness

see here for me waffling on more about my wonder cure

FrannyandZooey · 04/06/2007 09:31

can you have cauli, spring onions, garlic? Banana?

OP posts:
Cappuccino · 04/06/2007 09:36

I'd been having them for a week and then found out it was All Wrong

on the plus side I have never eaten more kale

FrannyandZooey · 04/06/2007 09:41

OP posts:
Cappuccino · 04/06/2007 09:45

bless you, what a fab title! (I am on a smiths revival myself at the mo, having just finished reading Pies and Prejudice and become all nostalgic)

no food yet, can't be bothered. Maybe I'll make some mint tea (my new fave tipple)
Am trying to summon ebergy for a Big Day Out with the boys who are still clingy after a week away from me. They go back to school tomorrow much to their disgust. The younger one thought it was summer hols...)

FrannyandZooey · 04/06/2007 12:41

Morning FMF

oh afternoon then

have you eaten anything yet? And where is everyone else? I've had a feew dried apricots. Am off on the bike to music group (this was what half killed me last fortnight so we will see how we go today now I am newly algae-powered

OP posts:
TooTicky · 04/06/2007 15:32

Cappuccino your detox sounds quite gruelling. How long do you have to do it for? (Oh, no rush with the pic - whenever it happens will be lovely)
Franny, algae-power sounds as if it has potential. Doesn't it multiply at a terrific rate? In its live, undried state I mean. I'm sure it could be useful.... oh, hang on, is it plant or is it one of those ambiguous planty-animal type things? Hmm, little green vegan alert light flashing....
Shall I stop waffling?
Okay.
(TT slopes off without actually mentioning what she has/hasn't eaten today.)

fillyjonk · 04/06/2007 17:24

oh god i just found your last thread, i can't keep up

am going to the gym to row and cycle and mourn the loss of my mp3 player

Pan · 04/06/2007 18:06

just seen. Brilliant name. Best so far!

MrsCarrot · 04/06/2007 18:20

Feeling slightly better now, Franny, glad you're so perky. I might have to get some of your algae/herb/broken cell thingy.

Aviatrix- apparently the homogenization is done by squirting milk through jets at high speed to break up the fat globules, which in turn can release xanthium oxidase, thought to affect arterial walls badly or something. There seem to arguments against this as well.

I hadn't really noticed that the fat is evenly dispersed, there always used to be a creamy top to shake, didn't there, even full fat doesn't have that anymore? I guess if there is an alternative I might buy it, if I was drinking it! Waitrose own (non organic) is non homogenized as well as Duchy, sold there too. Probably pricey, I haven't noticed it tbh.

banana, lentil and pea bake with salad and bean salad, apple, acerola cherry and blackcurrant smoothie, not sure what we're having for dinner yet, maybe fish and chips, with mushy peas!

FrannyandZooey · 04/06/2007 18:53

TooT I think algae are neither animal nor plant and I must admit it did give me small pause but I think they are single celled, aren't they? I am ashamed to admit I can't get too worked up about a single celled organism, but it is a very interesting ethical point I agree

what about bacteria? How do you feel about them? Cause there are a shedload of them as well, I think

OP posts:
FrannyandZooey · 04/06/2007 20:33

Have eaten:

roast veg: sweet potato, orange and yellow peppers, courgette, aubergine

and 10,000 single celled organisms

OP posts:
FrannyandZooey · 04/06/2007 20:34

oh and hummus

and dp is being AN ARSE of the highest order

OP posts:
Cappuccino · 04/06/2007 20:58

ooh tell all about your dp

TooTicky I am going to keep going till my bloody thrush is gone (unless it is still here for my holiday in July, in which case I am going to give up and just have thrush forever)

have had carrot sticks and broccoli (this was such a bad idea it makes me poorly every time and I ignore it cos I like it) and mangetout with houmous

and carrot soup

and spinach and tarka dhal for tea

MrsCarrot · 04/06/2007 20:58

actually resisted fish and chips because of the wheat, being most strict for two weeks to finally tell for certain if it affects LO, which I know it does really.

Had lovely healthy stir fry instead, cabbage, sugar snaps, peppers, onions, broccoli, carrots, then apple and raspberries.

Have also realised that the cold was not that bad if its mostly gone today as I only got it on thurs, so will refrain from 100000 organisms!

Tell your DP that you'll force feed him spirulina, Franny

MerryMarigold · 04/06/2007 21:16

Hi Franny and co.

Sorry, posted on all the old thread as well before I saw the link to new one.

I'd like to join you all for some inspiration on what to eat and when...

I have been better the last 2 days than previously.
Sunday - Scotch pancakes and quarter of melon for breakfast. Apple for snack mid pm. Prawn/ courgette/ mushroom stir fry (mostly courgette!). 4 portions.

Monday - Porridge with dried fruit and a banana. Chicken stew with lentils, mushrooms and carrot served with butternut squash. Probably 5 portions in total!!! Hooray. I made it to 5.

Lunch is my weakest link. I just don't fancy salad-y stuff (had celery in fridge for a week, probably lost all its vitamins by now). Feel like I need a carbo load at lunch!

FrannyandZooey · 04/06/2007 22:12

Hello MerryMarigold, good to see you! You have done well, and I am wondering if your portions are a bit conservative as I would count a quarter of a melon as more than 1 portion. Have you checked the link in my OP? There's a detailed table you can download, at the bottom of the page I link to. On Monday you had dried fruit, banana, lentils, mushrooms, carrots and butternut squash so potentially 6 or more portions there, depending on sizes. I think you've made great strides, tbh.

If you don't fancy any veg at lunch time could you make sure you have a fruit or veg snack every morning and afternoon? And add one more veg to your evening meal, so at least half of the plate is vegetables. I think if you did that you would be nearer 8 in total. You can also include 1 glass of juice per day (add it to breakfast or have with lunch?) and any beans / lentils you eat (add them to your evening meal). Then I reckon you could even do the full 10 without too much bother.

Capp we have shouted and cried and made up. Awwww. Would you believe that we were arguing over my (lack of) Mother's Day present? Less said the better I think

MrsCarrot is it your breastfed child who is affected? I haven't heard of wheat causing problems before, can you tell us more?

OP posts:
Greensleeves · 04/06/2007 22:21

Evening folks

I have eaten a veritable shit-pile of fruit and veg today. I will attempt to list it, purely for my own amusement

breakfast/mid-morning binge: 4 apples, 4 tangerines, one small banana

lunch - mixed salad of lollo rosso, rainbow chard, cucumber, carrot, onion, strawberries, tangerine segments, apple, mushrooms

dinner - hot veggie chilli containing - red lentils, yellow split peas, broad beans, kidney beans, spring garlic (whole bulb and stem), onions, tomatoes, mushrooms, carrots squash, spring cabbage.

glass of orange juice

MrsCarrot · 04/06/2007 22:31

I generally don't eat wheat anyway because of IBS, had to cut it out altogether in pregnancy as the symptoms were much worse.

Felix's symptoms are wheeziness, watery eyes and mild excema. The doctor said dairy DOESN'T get in breastmilk but the health shop, HV, cranial ost, homeopath etc said it does and lots of people on mnet have gp's who say it does.

My homeopath told me wheat also 'bungs' them up and this seems to backed up by more recent studies. Before the wedding he had dramatically improved and then as I ate what I wanted over that time it got worse.

I kept mostly avoiding it but then realising this or that had it hidden, like fish and chips! I have been strict for six days. It takes two weeks for it to get out of their system then I can introduce one thing at a time. I'm REALLY hoping he will be fine with goats or something.

We'll see, but wheat is bad for me anyway, as it is for a lot of people. Spelt is better, but still affects me. Oats and more oats!

Sorry, long boring post!
