For anyone who wants a boost to their general health. The suggested goals are:

EAT 10 PORTIONS OF FRUIT AND VEGETABLES EVERY DAY - if you don't usually eat much fruit and veg I would build up gradually or you could upset your digestion.

DO (AT LEAST) 10 MINUTES OF EXERCISE EVERY DAY - can be yoga, stretching or something more energetic. The plan is that the idea of doing 10 minutes is not too daunting, and having started you may well find you want to do more.

There are no restrictions on what you eat so long as you get your 10 fruit and veg as well. The focus is not on weight loss but on improving our energy levels and hopefully our general mood and well-being. Sign up below and post here to tell us how you're getting on and how you are feeling.

Basic guidance on what constitutes a portion of fruit and veg here and you can download more detailed information here (follow the link at the very bottom of the page)

Now I've had some pineapple and banana (and a couple of biscuits - they have coconut in them)

squatchette · 09/05/2007 23:17

This sounds like just what i need at the mo.Went up to my Dads at weekend and was disgusted to find i have gained a stone and a half in six months.I don't own scales and weight never really alters so i just check now and again on Dads .
How the hell has this come about. My sister suggested it may be the fact that i started driving again in october,so no more daily trecks with double buggy. She also helpfully added i had eaten a whole carrrot cake the previous day whilst on phone to her. How many portions of my 10 would that score me wonders?
Also went for a medical at new doctors last week and told nurse i was 8 and a half stone she must have thought lying cow look at the size of her arse .
Well rant over i will start this Friday when i go (healthy)shopping. Lots of d.i.y and new hobby of gardening planned for weekend so will keep y'all posted.

Hey, welcome Squatchette
Well done for not being scared off by the rest of the thread. Or for being sensible enough not to read it

FrannyandZooey · 10/05/2007 08:32

Squatchette welcome! I don't know what Tatties means, I think this thread is as usual a marvel of its kind

Thanks for the recommendations. I saw that Pipex was quite reasonable, and Virgin is the same as Tiscali unless it is a quicker download time? I find it really hard to work out which is the best deal when looking at binded services. YOu have to take into account whether there is a 1571 service, what difference losing friends and families will make. Have phones with caller display so like to get that service as well.
I think we will probably move as we are, bt for phone and then Tiscali for broadband and then try and sort it out at a later date. Ta for the input though
Last night we had cauliflower, mushroom and onion cheese bake. Also had a nice salad to go with. Plus pasta with a tomato sauce (although out of a jar
Complete loss fruit and veg wise this morning as am busy taking things to tip, charity shop and moving boxes into new house. All this must count as exercise Wheezing impressively as I do it of course.
I too am going to try and give pilates another go, from what I have read it really is very good for stomachs and toning in general
One more day of pc, and then who knows
Franny sorry to hear about your cold, hope your chocolate cake helped. So sorry for not really responding more to posters, but I am really doing a quick dash in and then rushing off again at this point

FrannyandZooey · 10/05/2007 10:53

Overrun

big loads of good wishes for your move

OP posts:
GColdtimer · 10/05/2007 15:18

I have not had one piece of fruit of veg today. Does a glass of orange juice count? And I am on a deadline so haven't moved from my seat. Lordy, I only started yesterday. This doesn't bode well.

FrannyandZooey · 10/05/2007 17:54

Golly I have not done too well either

walked about a lot in the rain looking at ducklings which will have to count for exercise

am having home made coleslaw with dinner but apart from that a v poor show since breakfast

OP posts:
FrannyandZooey · 10/05/2007 17:55

Twofalls juice does count for at least one (I say two in benevolent dictator mode)

can you wiggle about a bit or something?

OP posts:
Tatties · 10/05/2007 21:18

Franny what do you mean you don't know what I mean?

Today I have had prune juice, pineapple, about 3 satsumas, hummus, pepper, mushroom, courgette, carrot.... and no exercise... much the same as yesterday.

Squatchette welcome and Overrun good luck with the move!

FrannyandZooey · 10/05/2007 22:14

oops I am sorry Tatties I meant TooTicky

(she said well done for ignoring all the nonsense on the thread or something )

Tatties you are doing very well indeed on the F+V aren't you?

OP posts:
NotQuiteCockney · 10/05/2007 22:17

Oh, haven't been here for ages. Have been eating veg and fruit, and exercising loads, though.

Am trying to do no-white-carb, no-sugar. Will be baking cakes a lot tomorrow so will no doubt fall off the wagon.

Today:

  • muesli (1)
  • leftover stir fry (2)
  • 2 nectarines (2)
  • 2 giant mushrooms and rather a lot of asparagus (4)
  • lots and lots and lots of raw peas (4)
  • lots of watermelon (2)

So a healthy 15. Lots of walking, no biking, a short run.

FrannyandZooey · 10/05/2007 22:19

Oh you are being a scary pea-eating lady again! Fab

NotQuiteCockney · 10/05/2007 22:20

The posh turkish has them in. They gave me a discount because I bought all of them.

I would be but both boys went completely bonkers for them, too. Given that DS2 is a bit of a veg refusnik, that's got to be something to be happy about it.

NotQuiteCockney · 10/05/2007 22:21

I need to sleep. Have had an exhausting day with lots of bad bad bad cat things happen. (not death, poo, wee)

But I've sorted out tickets for a gig in August that I've got to go to, so am thrilled about that.

squatchette · 10/05/2007 22:32

Hello all, well i haven't managed many portions today as haven't been shopping yet -will tomorrow though.
However am pleased to say i spent 2 yes 2! hours at the park and went on everything with the girls until i was totaly knackered.
We got home and they said they wanted to play in the garden so i did an hour of weeding and digging.Lady across the road said she had never seen the garden dug in 27 years. No wonder it was so bloody hard .Sure i'll be sore in the morning ,but really think my weight gain is mainly due to lack of exercise. So glad this isn't a diet club though, much better to improve our overall health longterm .
Btw thanks for the warm welcome

Overrun · 10/05/2007 22:52

Just about the turn the pc off, but have overwhelming urge to say that I feel sad about Tony Blair Now you will all hate me i guess.
Boxes packed, loaded and transported (more than 10 minutes exercise)
Apple, banana, tomato.
cauliflower and mushroom mix
spinach with garlic for dinner
with cos lettuce salad

Not brilliant I guess

FrannyandZooey · 11/05/2007 08:04

I am sorry you feel sad about Tony Blair, Overrun. I think I will leave it at that, though

Squatchette definitely not a diet club, although the number of us whinging about our flabbiness makes me wonder if we should actually DO the exercise part, or something

NQC I hope you had some rest and that no more bad bad bad cat things happen today

I was up before 6 and dp is not home till after 8 pm (why did I think it was a good idea to book him an advanced cycling lesson for a present?) and I am working in the afternoon

still have sneezy cold, bah

have eaten apple, orange, grapes, raisins, banana, that should sort it out

OP posts:
GColdtimer · 11/05/2007 09:10

I did manage to do some wiggling in my chair Franny and then chased dd round the house for a good 30 minutes so I suppose that counts. Somewhat redeemed myself with a huge veggie stirfry followed with kiwi, banana and an orange.

Overrun, although I don't feel about TB going, I did feel a bit watching the news. I was just about to embark on my round the world trip when he got voted in and I was feeling a bit nostalgic last night remembering what excitement I had ahead of me.

TooTicky · 11/05/2007 13:46

Today, have had ratatouish tomato/onion/mushroom/aubergine/courgette/garlic. Yum. And two types of cake (well, it was ds1's birthday yesterday and ds2 didn't like the cake because it was too lemony so I had to stay up late and make a chocolate cake so he could have something fun in his lunchbox. Flapjack bars and sugar-free alphabet biscuits lose their appeal somewhat if big sis and bro have cake) Anyway, I couldn't decide which one to have and didn't want the other one to feel rejected.

FrannyandZooey · 11/05/2007 18:25

I just had a load of M+S salads for dinner (my revenge on dp for abandoning us all evening)

don't know how much actual vegetation was in them though, they were pretty rice / pasta / couscous etc based

still I tried

and my cold is unshiftable apparently

Sorry to hear about ds Avi. I have only heard gossip and so on about COs so won't comment

Erm have done nothing about pins and needles I did some reading, and found that your liver needs to be fairly badly screwed before anything shows up on the liver function test, so me feeling safe having had a normal LFT was bollocks

still loads of pins and needles all the time

I am just scared but I will go next week. Probably

This thread is way too long for me to plough through so I'll just wave and hug you all as appropriate and tell you that I am rubbish this week. I have managed 5 a day but no way 10.
I feel ugly and speccy (residual keratitis lingering so no contacts for a month now...Today I have crammed myself full though, blueberries for breakfast and porrigde, salad sandwiches for lunch, some shelled peas, a banana, an apple, and sweet potaor and chikpea curry with cocnut milk, baby sweetcorn, sugarsnap peas, and greenybeans.
