For anyone who wants a boost to their general health. The suggested goals are:

EAT 10 PORTIONS OF FRUIT AND VEGETABLES EVERY DAY - if you don't usually eat much fruit and veg I would build up gradually or you could upset your digestion.

DO (AT LEAST) 10 MINUTES OF EXERCISE EVERY DAY - can be yoga, stretching or something more energetic. The plan is that the idea of doing 10 minutes is not too daunting, and having started you may well find you want to do more.

There are no restrictions on what you eat so long as you get your 10 fruit and veg as well. The focus is not on weight loss but on improving our energy levels and hopefully our general mood and well-being. Sign up below and post here to tell us how you're getting on and how you are feeling.

Basic guidance on what constitutes a portion of fruit and veg here and you can download more detailed information here (follow the link at the very bottom of the page)

Yup just pop them out and eat them in your salad suzy

or as Greeny said you can eat them hot if you lightly cook them

they have a lovely fresh spring-like taste

Ds and I managed to find a picture book in the library today called "The life cycle of the Broad Bean"

it has made us very happy

there is no nicer risotto than a broad bean one. hello all on this thread. i've been shopping for clothes today and it was so miserable that i'm resolved to do sometthing about my expanding gut.
have just polished off a luxury (ie fattening) yoghurt to celebrate.

FrannyandZooey · 08/05/2007 21:26

Hello Aitch how lovely to see you

Are you comfy? Is there anything we can get you? Shall I turn the whalesongs up a bit so you can enjoy them more fully?

Do you think the reason that I don't like broad beans is anything to do with the fact they were never "popped out of their skins" when I was child?

AitchTwoOh · 08/05/2007 21:31

got, yes. the skin is revolting, makes your teeth itch. you gotta pop 'em. blanch them for a few mins in boiling water, then slit up the side and peel. a faff but worth it.

AitchTwoOh · 08/05/2007 21:32

God yes, i mean. and i'm obviously back in now.

GColdtimer · 08/05/2007 21:32

Ahhh, might try that then. I can see a load coming from my Dad's allotement this year and was wondering what the hell to do with the horrible old chewy things.

GColdtimer · 08/05/2007 21:33

allotment

FrannyandZooey · 08/05/2007 21:33

what skin are we talking about here? Do you mean the pod? I am clueless otherwise

FrannyandZooey · 08/05/2007 21:34

Twofalls are you in?

OP posts:
GColdtimer · 08/05/2007 21:34

here miss.

GColdtimer · 08/05/2007 21:34

No I don't think I mean the pod, I mean the tough old skin.

AitchTwoOh · 08/05/2007 21:34

no, the horrible bluey-grey rubbery sheath betwixt bean and pod.

GColdtimer · 08/05/2007 21:36

I have just never "got" broad beans and perhaps the aforementioned coating is the reason why.

AitchTwoOh · 08/05/2007 21:37

fresh broad beans, feta and griddled courgette dressed with lemon juice, olive oil and chopped fresh mint is a Lovely Salad.

FrannyandZooey · 08/05/2007 21:39

I just ate a scad of them, never saw no "sheath"

on Twofalls' membership

right, you know your way around?

OP posts:
Greensleeves · 08/05/2007 21:40

You only get the "sheath" effect if a)they are as olda s the hills before you eat them, or b)you have murderously overcooked them

AitchTwoOh · 08/05/2007 21:41

i think the bean condom is more noticeable when you are given them by crazed allotmenteers desperate to get rid of overgrown produce. you want to ask him for some now, twofalls, while they're still young.

GColdtimer · 08/05/2007 21:43

Do you think he is trying to palm me off with his old rubbish? You wait until I see him

Any franny, thanks for asking. I do get a bit lost from time to time.

AitchTwoOh · 08/05/2007 21:43

x-posted with greeny re. the beandom. although i don't think it's anything to do with overcooking, myself. i just like them better blanched and out of their skins. lovely colour.
try it, franny, you'll see...

ash6605 · 08/05/2007 21:51

Hi i'm back!!

The COLONIC -what can i say,it was a complete pile of shite!!

no,seriously i did it to help my weight loss along as well as for a detox. i don't know whether i've actually lost weight as i don't believe in weighing myself but my clothes are a bit slacker and my tummy is flatter.
having said that though the nurse doing said i was VERY bloated and that i was mainly full of wind rather than "matter" which she thinks is a wheat allergy.she also thought i had thrush(candida)in my bowel which until treated would mean i'd never lose weight.

i do feel a little more refreshed and have more energy but not enough to justify the pain and £55 it cost me.

ash6605 · 08/05/2007 21:55

foodwise, after my 3 portions of fruit at breakfast i've had an apple&satsuma.then for tea had chicken curry with mushrooms, peppers&onions in with rice, peas carrots, sweetcorn and broccoli.think that's more than 10!!
didn't get to gym so did another 15mins on the treadmill.
