aaah Podiatrists & orthotics. Don't want to biaise opinions but "been there & done it" over the years. My only word of caution is that from experience I have found that correcting one problem (eg knee) brings on another (eg hip)??? . I now run orthortic free, but with various aches & pains which may or may not be down to increasing age but I believe from experience won't be completely cured by a podiatrist...cyncial or what

lapsedrunner · 15/05/2007 20:17

....which may be why I am "Lapsedrunner"

popsycal · 15/05/2007 21:15

mckenzie - I would be really grateful
I also have a colleague at work who i seem to remember has seen a podiatrist recently so i will ask her tomorrow
tbh the more i think abotu it, the more i am convinced that on going knee problems throughout my teens and early twenties could be related to this as my feet are REALLY flat and i do roll in quite a bit

not sure if we have a specilist running shop close by...

mckenzie · 15/05/2007 21:16

i'll e amil her now ready for when she gets back popsycal. what area are you in?

popsycal · 15/05/2007 21:31

actually
could you email me
[email protected]
cheers

mckenzie · 15/05/2007 22:28

will do

Pidge · 16/05/2007 12:08

mingming/jopg! I did go to the GP and she said - ermm, could be some kind of repetitive strain injury. Not much use. The answer of course is to rest it. It's now not hurting when I walk and hasn't been for about 5 days. So the question is ... when can I go out for a trial run on it. I don't want to make it worse again. But equally, I'm half tempted to try a half hour session tonight and then jog around my charity 10k on Saturday. Is that really stupid?

mckenzie · 16/05/2007 12:39

fwiw Pidge, the guy who takes our Thursday run session has a rule that if it's pain free for 3 days you can try a short run. And you say you've been pain free for 5 days so I'd go for a little run round the block and then wait a few days and hope that it stays pain free.
Remember though, when you are out running, if you push it too much today and it's not healed properly, you'll only further delay your recovery (ie, dont be tempted to run too far just because it doesn't hurt 'at the moment'. tomorrow will be the test)
Good luck

Pidge · 16/05/2007 12:44

that's good advice mckenzie - I was a bit dumb last week - ran half an hour on Monday and it didn't hurt, so did another half an hour on Tuesday and that set me right back - I was limping for the next 2 days.

GreebosWhiskers · 16/05/2007 12:53

Just spotted this thread - I went out for a run for the first time ever on Monday - only managed about 700 metres in about 4 mins & was knackered but am going out again tonight & will be doing the 1 mile fun run during the Dunfermline half marathon on the 27th with dd2 regardless of whether I can run it all or have to walk half the way.

dh used to be a really good amateur distance runner & has recently gone back to it & rejoined his old running club (that he actually helped to found) & his big comeback race is gonna be the 5k on the 26th also in Dunfermline Glen.

If anyone on here lives anywhere near west Fife you might like to come along to Dunfermline Glen (Pittencrieff Park) on that weekend - there's the 5k on Saturday 26th & the half marathon & family fun run on Sunday the 27th as well as a weekend-long 'expo' in the park itself. You'll find more info here

popsycal · 16/05/2007 16:35

I have decided to do the 10k in september
Have worked ourt that I can do my 5k in july then do the bupa 8 week 10 K plan (just about!!!) I don't mind if I have a walk in the middle of it!

As for my knees, I am going to go to the gp and get a referral to a podiatrist. Mckenzie - please still ask your friend to recommennd one for me as if it is quicker, I may well go without the gp referral. I want to keep running and get it sorted asap.

Anyone got an idea what an appointment and a set of inserts will cost if not through the gp?

mustrunmore · 16/05/2007 19:48

Hello all... inspiration needed please. Because of the foot/ankle thing, and then going on hols with my Mum, this is 5 days with no running. I'm already into that mindset of it being pointless because I'll be crap again blah blah blah. But I must do a run tonight.

DeviousDaffodil · 16/05/2007 19:55

Go for it!!
You will feel sp much better after.

mustrunmore · 16/05/2007 19:56

I know, I know. Am thinknig just a slow jog to get back into it. Seeing as I potentially have to wait till 11pm for tescos man anyway

mckenzie · 16/05/2007 20:00

reasons to run.

  1. it's not raining, make the most of it.
  2. you'll have to do the washing up if you stay at home
  3. you might meet another runner while you are out who is tall, dark and handsome
  4. your shopping might be delivered while you are out and DH will put it all away
  5. you an have a delicious bubbly bath when you get back
  6. you will feel soooooooooooooooooo much better once you've done it.

Go girl, go!!!

mustrunmore · 16/05/2007 20:05

Mckenzie, thats just the kind of specifics I was after!! Thank you, sincerely
But I like washing up and rain, and I couldnt trust dh to put the stuff away!! It's stop me running because it'd be praying on my mind that he wouldn't check it, or put it in a way other than my own Reckon the prospect of meeting a God would swing it if I was in shape Am off to put my kit on.

lapsedrunner · 16/05/2007 20:08

GreebosWhiskers - welcome, you are doing great, keep it up .

popsycal- inserts (orthotics) = expensive . Perhaps try a good pair of anti pronation shoes first?

Pidge - did your GP suggest it might be Plantar Facsilitis (spelling?). Just a thougt as from personal experience it needs a combination of rest, anti inflamatories & deep calf streches.

lapsedrunner · 16/05/2007 20:09

mustrunmore - get off your pC & run

popsycal · 16/05/2007 21:23

think i might try a new pair of trainers specifically for m problem....have some suggestions from a site i have found

need to find a good running shop in the area

Pidge · 17/05/2007 08:36

lapsedrunner - to be honest the GP didn't really know, she just said you can get 'repetitive strain' type injuries from running. The pain when I get it is along the right hand side of my right foot, and it only hurts when walking /running as my foot rolls forward and the heel lifts off the floor putting pressure on the front half of my foot.

Anyway I went out for half an hour last night and it felt ok for the first 20 minutes, then was a bit achey for the last 10. Not hurting as such, but definitely achey. So I was a bit despondent. But now I've kind of decided I probably need to take another 7-10 days off of complete rest and give it another go and it will probably be just fine. I am going to miss my 10k on Saturday - I would only have been jogging round anyway, and I'd rather play it super cautious and make sure I'm fit for my clubs 5 mile champs on July 1st.

popyscal - very excited to hear you're going for an autumn 10k. It's an excellent target to build towards and you still have loads of time.

mustrunmore · 17/05/2007 08:50

So, I did get off my bum and run last night. But it was terrible Only did 15 min interval training. But without boring you all, the heel/ankle thing is still killing me. I thought it was better. Obv not, as I was in too much pain even to make off my trainer. Eventually did, sat with foot in a washing up bowl of water, then covered whole area in voltarol in desperation. More annoyed though, as I really wanted to do a good long one once I got changed and started.

DeviousDaffodil · 17/05/2007 11:28

Went out for 5 miles this am.
45 mins so not bad.
Have put myself doen for a half marathoon in Oct.
Just ordered some shorts and vest as it was really warm out there today.
Take it easy must runmore.

Wallace · 17/05/2007 22:18

Hi, think it is time I joined this thread

I am signed up to do a half marathon in October. I haven't run since I was at school so I am taking things slowly to start with. I am in my third week of an 8 week training prog. for a 5k, which I will do on the 1st of July.

popsycal - I am having the same problem as you with my knees

popsycal · 17/05/2007 22:42

wallace - i have found a few pairs of trainers for folks who roll in....I also have flat feet which makes it worse
will do a link....am goingto try to buy some this weekend as i havent run since monday

popsycal · 17/05/2007 22:45

these trainers and these ones

I rang a podiatrist but no appts for weeks and weeks and i needto do something
it is definitely my rolling in the is doing it. Inside the lower edge of my knee joint hurts and outside edge of upper knee joiunt hurts
have worn knee supports all day as being on my feet all day yesterday really hurt and i had to get up and take nurofen in the night
