My injury is spinal themoon66. My understanding is that two of my discs (L4 and L5) are totally degenerate and last year they started to impimge on the nerve that controls bowel and bladder movements.
I was lucky enough to ask for a second opinion as the first guy I saw wanted to rush me in for what he called emergency surgery. 3 opinions later and I found a guy who said we could sort it without surgery this time. He has said that surgery is probably inevitable but suggests we wait unitl my youngest is older otherwise the lifting of DD, the pushchair etc will only hinder the recovery.

Anyway, the upshot is I am now pain free and back to running albeit shorter distances and slower pace than before and followed by lots of streching, pilates, pool exercises and swimming.
Fingers crossed.
I hope you remain pain free too.

mustrunmore · 08/05/2007 17:35

Oh god, you're all so good compared to me
Not going well this week; the same foot that has the new-sandals rub now also has a very sore heel. Not sure if its connected; doesnt feel so, but its a coincidence if not So I got going this morning, and stopped 2 mins later in agony. Am very peed off with myself.

On the plus side, I went to Sweatshop and got new trainers today That should give me an incentive! Am a whole shoe size bigger than prekids I feel like clown feet now. The trainers are really ugly too , but they felt so good!

mckenzie · 08/05/2007 17:51

hi mustrunmore, i went to Sweatshop myself for some new runners about 6 weeks ago - it's sucha lovely feeling isn't it?
Do you live that neck of the woods (I'm assuming you meant the FInchley one)?

mustrunmore · 08/05/2007 18:38

Yep, it was and I do! Sooo good; 15 mins before I had to leave to get ds1 from nursery. In, 'help me', tried on 3 or 4 pairs, on the treadmill to check, paid, out.
But i do wish someone would make attractive trainers! Or just really plain and insignificant looking ones at least!

lapsedrunner · 08/05/2007 19:21

Mustrun more I can highly recomend Compeed (or similar make) blister plasters. You can wack them on really raw blisters and still run pain free (almost).

lapsedrunner · 08/05/2007 19:23

Mustrunmore, meant to add that properly fitting trainers should be one size larger than your normal shoe size to allow for swelling (hot feet+ distance covered).

mustrunmore · 08/05/2007 19:35

I had some compeed once. I agree , they were great! I think i got them in a post-run goodie bag one time. Expensive though

My new trainers are a size bigger than the old ones, which fitted fine before I loved those ones, and they had a fair bit of milage left in them. I had another pair too (indoor pair and outdoor pair, as I'm too lazy to clean them all the time!), which I didnt like as much, but have only worn them 5 or 6 times. I hate wasting money. Anyway, the new ones are 1/2 size bigger than I seem to be in normal footwear now (if I could ever get half sizes anywhere!)

Opinions please. Do you think the newly aquired heel pain is part of the sandal rubbing incident, or a separate issue(perhaps related to running in inappropriate footwear lately)? It doesnt feel like its stemmed from the sore bit. But then, it couldve altered my running stance having that patch, and so done some damage that way. I just want to get back into action really.

ThatBeetroot · 08/05/2007 19:44

any one doing the south downs rely race on 16th June?

ThatBeetroot · 08/05/2007 19:52

any good shops for running stuff??

glitterfairy · 08/05/2007 20:16

I use a small one near me called complete runner. It is tiny and tucked away in a back street run by fanatics though. THey have great stuff and are all runners themselves which helps.

ThatBeetroot · 08/05/2007 21:13

that is helpful glitter thanks!!!

glitterfairy · 09/05/2007 07:52

Are you being sarcastic beets!

Today is gym day. I went running yesterday (3 and a half miles)and wasnt really in the mood so did a bit of walking in the middle to clear my head and think. Thursday will be my next run and I am going to do nearly five miles and try some fartlek in the middle of the run.

I have started to do this and also make myself sprint for home at the end of a run.
I am finding runners world magazine very helpful and have downloaded their podcasts as well. realbuzz is also a good site.

Friday is my fast mile day where I will concentrate on speed. I have done this mile in ten minutes (even though there is a hill) and am aiming to to try and knock the odd second off.

Pidge · 09/05/2007 08:45

tried a half hour run with my club last night, and at the end my foot was really hurting and today I'm limping when walking again. Looks like I need that doctor's appointment after all. Really frustrating as I have a 10k in 10 days, which is now looking rather unlikely.

Never had a running injury before, plus my legs and in post marathon "I WANT TO RUN" mode. How frustrating. At least I have my cycle ride to work to keep my happy!

Wuxiapian · 09/05/2007 09:31

Hi, guys.

Well, I'm (just about) over the blisters, but now I have blessed shin splints!

I'm still running 3 times a week, but my left shin is still sore throughout the week.

Does anyone know if there's anything I can do to ease the discomfort?

Thanks in advance

Heathcliffscathy · 09/05/2007 09:34

dh has bought me the nike trainers with the little ipod thing that tells you your run stats!!! they are half a size too small (my toes touching the end) so will have to swap them but am so chuffed....such a great present!

Saggarmakersbottomknocker · 09/05/2007 10:23

Hi Wuxiapian - are you running on the roads or treadmill? Are you varying your route? Is it always flat or lots of hills? Have you done too much too soon? Sorry lol too many questions, but there's lots to think about - Have a look at the Runners world website too there are usually a lot of discussions on shin splints.

OP posts:
ThatBeetroot · 09/05/2007 11:30

soph - I want those!

Glitter you are beign amazing.

I am running 20 miles er weeknow - 4 lots of 5.

Need to really up my speed though butnot sure how to do that!

Sarcastic? Moi??

glitterfairy · 09/05/2007 12:33

LOL beets and thanks. Ate too much though last night and some dark chocolate but what the heck? Every now and then wont hurt?

Wuxi Runners world this month has an article on shin splints.

I am doing about 18 miles a week now and my knees are just about holding up and getting better but can be really painful if I overdo it. Went to the gym today and did sterngth work I find that helps.

Beets how about fartlek to get your speed up?

Wuxiapian · 09/05/2007 12:41

Sagger, I'm running in the park which is mostly flat concrete with only a couple small inclines.
I've actually been doing less the last couple weeks, down to 20/30 mins 3 times a week as opposed to 30/40 mins 4/5 times when I first started about 5 weeks ago so don't understand why I'm still getting the pain.

Thanks for the runner's world pointer, you, too, Glitter. I'll certainly have a nosey

Gizmo · 09/05/2007 12:57

Hear that? That's the sound of me champing at the bit. Somehow, not having to run has reinvigorated my desire to. I finally got out on Monday and it was mighty fine to be able to just whip out for a 40 minute leg stretch. Since I formally gave DS2 his last bf in the week after FLM and my waistline is now getting alarmingly blubbery, I definitely need to revive my running. Is anyone doing any early/mid summer 10ks?

Pidge, I do feel for you, really, but at this point I think the only thing that is going to work is a solid month of good behaviour, and only cycling. Hopefully your GP might have some ideas, but many don't, of course - do you know any good physiotherapists? Or you could try getting pregnant - it worked for me, my dodgy ITB hip now seems fine .

Beety, sounds like you are pretty quick already, but if you want to go quicker, then fartlek is good and you might want to try some form of speed reps. Where's Twink when you need her? I remember she used to have some good ones. Some simple ones that I can remember are:

10 x 200 meters uphill, jog down recovery.
100 meter, 200 meter, 400 meter, 800 meter, 400 meter, 200 meter, 100 meter, with 2 minute recoveries between. Repeat if you're still conscious.

Or there's my friend Jim's approach to speed training:

'If you're feeling masochistic, try this pyramid I came up with yesterday. You do speed sets of 30s, 1m, 2m, 3m, 3m, 2m, 1m, 30s. On the way up the pyramid you take as much rest (jogging) as you've just run. On the way down you take as much rest as you're about to run. Throw in 10mins warm up and cool down at either end and you've got a good 43 minute session.

If you're not feeling masochistic, I came up with another (probably non-novel) idea, whilst doing the stupid pyramid scheme: - it seems like speed training would be more fun if it were more like speed dating. Perhaps you would warm up, go and look at some training for a minute, and then decide it wasn't for you. Repeat 5 or so times and then go to the pub.'

ThatBeetroot · 09/05/2007 13:15

what is fartlek??

Pidge · 09/05/2007 13:35

Beetroot - fartlek means 'speed play' - basically you jog and then when you fancy it you do a bit of fast running, then slower running, then super fast, then jog etc. It's like interval training only less rigid. Say you're running round the park, you might warm up with a jog for 10 minutes, and then do 15-20 minutes of fartlek, setting yourself targets like "run fast to that tree", "slow to the path", "super fast to the next lampost", "slow to the dustbin" etc etc. You just make it up as you go along and it's supposed to be fun!

The idea is by mixing up your speeds you improve your overall ability to go faster (plus your endurance apparently).

Gizmo - I suspect you are right about rest . Have never had an injury lay off so am a bit grumpy! Like you I'm raring to go and get out running. I feel great apart from my foot. Can someone reassure me that a month off (on top of my two weeks off just now) won't lose me all that marathon-gained fitness!!!

Wuxiapian · 09/05/2007 13:38

Bloody hell fire. Sounds torturous.

Saggarmakersbottomknocker · 09/05/2007 13:45

Gizmo - even the thought of the pyramid makes me feel sick. Think I'll stick with the second option. And I miss Twink - was anyone ever in touch with her in RL. She's not been here in nearly a year.

Wuxiapian - could you run on grass for a while in the park? And back to basics - what are your shoes like?

MrsSpoon · 09/05/2007 16:11

You lot are putting me to shame, I've not done any running since the treadmill on Friday. I went to RPM (like Spinning) yesterday and think I'll go this evening too. It's perhaps my rebellious side but I just don't feel like running!
