Popsy - Hello I mentioned on your other thread that I'm a bit remiss on the bra front as I have little in the norkage area. I just wear a good non-underwired bra not a specific sports one.

As far as how to run. Hmmm I wouldn't worry too much about it at the moment, just keep putting one foot in front of the other. Once you are running consistently without the walking bits you'll find yourself a bit of a rhythm - and it will start to feel good . Generally they say think 'up' before 'forward', and try to stay relaxed around the shoulder area.

Well done on the timed mile.

I've just got back in my Nike drifit bra, much to my relief. Also, had an M+S sports one when I was bf. I find that they have to be the ones that look like little tops, not bras, or they do nothing at all

How to run? eek! I'd feel bad giving advice, given that I'm so shit now But off the top of my head..er... run to a rhythmn that in your mind, and try to focus on pushing your pelvis forward. It wont actually be unaturally forward, but stops you running all bunched up like a hunchback! And decide if you're a loosearm runner, or a bunched up close to your sides runner

Not sure if I'm running tonight; bought clarks sandals today, seemed ok, wore for 40 mins and there's blood and blisters everywhre Might start a thread on my chances of getting an exchange.

Pidge · 03/05/2007 20:26

Oooh popsy - welcome, welcome. How exciting to have you here. I swear that march 2005 babies thread is positively teeming with runners!

On the bra front - I have a really good M&S one too. Plus a couple from a sports shop. The main thing is that they're tight fitting and supportive. I'm breastfeeding a 2 year old too - just mornings in my case. In fact in a moment of idle speculation round the marathon I started wondering how many other breastfeeding mums were running!!! I came to the conclusion, probably not that many!

As for running style - I say go with what's comfy for you. Look where Paula got to with her head wobbling. The main thing when you start is to go slow, slow, slow. Try to keep so slow that you could have a chat (albeit an out of breath one!). And walk-running combinations are great.

I'm contemplating trying to run for 20-30mins tomorrow, which is probably a bit naughty because my foot still hurts. It's not agony, just sore when I walk, and it doesn't seem to be improving particularly quickly. Anyway, thought I might give it a go and just stop if it hurts too much. 10k fun run for me in just over 2 weeks ...

We should probably put together a race list, but am feeling feeble and disorganised ... !

popsycal · 03/05/2007 20:35

Right i am off to m and s tomorrow. I may even get properly measured as I am sure I havent been properly measured since nursing bras for ds1 (5 years and 2 BF babies ago!!!). May even treat myself to some nice bras as well as a running one!

I am taking it slow - following the race for life/bupa 5k novices programme. Not getting carried away. I want to be able to run the 5K (a mere toddle to you seasoned runners!!!) and think with the programme I have, I should be able to do it.

Thanks for all your advice!

popsycal · 03/05/2007 20:39

is this the kind of thing i am looking for?

mustrunmore · 03/05/2007 20:54

I think thats pretty similar to my M+S one! I just went for the highest impact level they did!

Pidge · 03/05/2007 20:55

Yup, that looks just like my M&S one ....

mckenzie · 03/05/2007 21:20

M&S have bought out a new sports bar for high impact workouts (inc running) recently and I treated myself to some new ones and have been really really pleased (always used to were shock absorber). They have given me lots of support (DD cup) and also a great cleavage .

As for how to run popsycal, may i suggest a few things that work for me?
One bad habit to get into is to tense your shoulders and upper back. Try to let you arms hang fairly loosely by your side and only bend the elbow and pump them more when running up hills. If you imagine you are holding a crisp between your thumb and your fore finger. You dont want to drop the crisp but you also dont want to snap it. That you keep you arms/shoulders faily relaxed.
When running downhill let you arms really drop by your sides and lean forward ever so slightly.
When running up hill keep looking ahead of you, pump you arms and try to keep a bit more on your toes.
Most of all, dont run too fast too soon.
And enjoy

JoPG · 03/05/2007 21:22

Went out for 7 miles on Tuesday at what was supposed to be a quick pace, but that never really materialised. Staggered round, and am trying to convince myself that I was struggling cos I had given blood about 12 hours before. What do you think, a good excuse?
Anyway, will try for an hour run on Saturday, probably run to the swimming pool and meet DH and the kids there.

Pidge - I was a bf-ing marathon runner for FLM 2006. Wonder how many there are?

JoPG · 03/05/2007 21:23

P.S - Welcome Popsycal. Enjoy your running.
March 2005 mums are definitely some of the fittest around!

Gizmo · 03/05/2007 21:29

Yeah, that's the sort of thing I use, too (although it's not grey enough to be an authentic item of Gizmo underwear ). Just make sure it fits adequately and particularly around the chest - I have one bra that leaves welts on the underside of my boobs everytime I wear it because it leaps around and bites them. Nice.

So I still haven't got out for a run, but I do like MRM's and Pidge's ideas so shall try a few short 'greatest hits' laps of the park tomorrow night.

MRM, re buggy madness - have you tried him with a scooter or likeabike? If he's co-ordinated enough to use one you might find he can go quite long distances at the same pace as you and have fun. Only downside is that when they do run out of steam you have to carry the damn things, but still it was a lifesaver for us in getting DS1 out of the stroller.

Saggarmakersbottomknocker · 03/05/2007 22:16

Giving blood sounds like a great excuse Jo. Not sure 7 miles within 12 hours is recommended.

OP posts:
mustrunmore · 04/05/2007 08:27

Scooter is a good idea for him to join me in a jog, thanks! The only thing is, he's learnt from a neighbour that the dummy fairy brings you a scooter, and he does mention it from time to time, so we'd be forced into dropping the dummy I cant face the trauma at the moment

No run last night, and I screamed everytime the duvet touched my new-sandal-injury. I'm such a wuss. Off to clarks in a bit to try and exchange/complain/cry in the shop

MrsSpoon · 04/05/2007 13:11

Got on the treadmill today and now my hips are killing me, I remember this from last year, is this normal? or am I doing damage?

hattie2 · 04/05/2007 16:05

Any luck with the sandal complaint mustrunmore? Sounds very painful .

Great tip about holding a crisp mckenzie, I always seem to tense my shoulders and fists like I'm on a white knuckle ride! Made a concious effort to do the crisp thing when out at luchtime today and it worked well.

MrsSpoon · 04/05/2007 17:13

The crisp thing is a good idea. I tend to touch my thumb and middle finger together and then open my hand again in the same rhythm as I am running IYKWIM, open, shut, open, shut, but only gently, gives me something to do, stops me tensing up and also helps me keep the rhythm, kind of have my breathing going in a pattern that works in with the running, opening and shutting of hands too. I probably look and sound like a looney!

Saggarmakersbottomknocker · 04/05/2007 17:18

Hope crying in the shop did the trick mustrunmore.

MrsSpoon - I don't know about your hips but I bow down to anyone who can run on a treadmill for any length of time. I just get so tense and by the time I get off feel stressed and sore.

OP posts:
mustrunmore · 04/05/2007 19:07

I'm going to try the crisp thing too

Got an exchange on the sandals (no refund as they'd been worn outside). I know have 8 days to test them...indoors.But am doubting if it'll be realistic, given the whopping great big wound on my foot from the other ones... Also, the only alternative ones that fitted my requirements were £10 more So I'm deciding whether to skip another run tonight and just do some squats/crunches/anything not involving rubbing footwear, or whether to bite the bullet and do a long slow jog.

Pidge · 04/05/2007 19:23

ouch - mustrunmore - sounds like a good excuse to not run.

I feebled out of my run today, so still haven't got out there since the marathon. My foot still hurts a bit, but really today I was just too exhausted. Now feel I'm developing a bit of a mental hurdle about my FIRST run!! Gizmo, did you get out there in the end.

jo - I reckon breastfeeding marathoners must be a fairly small group!!!

I was in the wrong size for a few months after stopping bf (at xmas).. thought I was 36c, turns out I'm 34e!!!

hana · 04/05/2007 19:58

hello everyone

I've just started getting back into running after a looooong absence and feel so v v good about it. Trying to fit in a run just after dh gets back from work ( usually quite late, around 8ish) and one on the weekend. Have been putting some good running songs on my ipod which helps. I've been lurking on these threads for a while, but now that I've actually started again thought I would start posting! I don't think I'm running that far, it's usually about 25/30 min, and has taken a good few runs to work up to that.
(no run tonight, here munching on chocolate and drinking wine )

hatwoman · 04/05/2007 21:47

hi everyone. hope you're all ok. I've been hobbling for about 3 weeks after Kingston, - not sure what I did but I had one day when my ankle was agony, but it seems better now and I finally got out again today. i was wondering if anyone's doing the Hogsmill 5 in Epsom next weekend? women only, they have children's races and cakes. apparently very nice, lovely atmosphere. and only 5 miles . anyone fancy it?

sarflondon · 05/05/2007 11:11

Hi everyone especially everyone new or returning to running. Hope your grumbly foot problems has gone away Pidge. Just back from my second run since FLM. Found it hard to get out the door for the first one but when I did I was elated at the thought that I didn;t have to run for 26 miles. It is so nice to be out running again. Lapsedrunner well done. I think that is a good time. Has anyone else got yukky trainers from the lucozade sport puddles on FLM?

Hatwoman - Hogmsill sounds great but if I suggest a Sunday outing to a race to my dp and dcs they will stone me.

ThatBeetroot · 05/05/2007 11:16

hello I want to come back after a long absence. I am running alot now. 5 miles 3/4 times a week. My quickest time so far has been 45 mins but I have only managed that once and seem to be averaging 48mins.

any tips?
