the cancer research training plans are alos good - I intend to use a combination of the cancer research and bupa ones to get up to 10k in 8 weeks
eeeeek

mustrunmore · 03/07/2007 20:19

They're really good times

Apparently I was spotted out running by a nursery Mum at the weekend... at a point when I wasnt even running And I was wearing the worst stuff imaginable, looking like a bag lady walking a bit faster than they normally do Another reason to change my route methinks!

TheDuchessOfNorks · 03/07/2007 20:22

You're all very good upping the distance so soon. I don't think I want to do 10k - although if I want to do fast times at 5k (which I do) then I shall have to toughen up by doing longer distances.

I looked at the Nike Triax on sportsshoe but they only had 4s & 7s. And I'm a very popular size 6! I will be looking at getting some waterproof trail shoes though after todays paddling!

saggarmakersbottomknocker · 03/07/2007 20:33

Duchess - it took me about 4 years to up my distance lol. I kept doing 3 or 4 miles and feeling rubbish for most of it. It finally clicked that I felt better after running for about 25 minutes so maybe I should just carry on. 10k is about my limit though otherwise my aged bones start to complain.

glitterfairy · 03/07/2007 21:03

OK no training plan for me just doing as I am told by personal trainer but may try a plan as well.

VVVSzyslak · 03/07/2007 21:45

ooh that bupa link was very helpful!

I'd been kinda doing the plan myself, but not in a very structured manner, and suspect i have been pushing myself too far. I wonder about the anaerobic exercise aspect, and how my asthma fits in with that.

My motivation, other than to get fit, is to fit into my wedding dress for november which is two sizes too small (done deliberately).

I do miss doing sport. It used to come so naturally to just run and not have any effort (I used to do athletics up until my mid teens). It's strange to find it so difficult now

Veggiemummy · 03/07/2007 22:43

good idea on the wedding dress very brave.

how bad is your asthma, has it been a problem so far?

The shoe thing should help, also what sort of surface do you run on, footpaths or grass. I have had friends say they have pain if they run on anything other than grass or ground basically, anyone else know anything about the road vs grass thing?

SayHelloHunkerForOneNightOnly · 03/07/2007 22:48

Not tooo bad, although this winter I had to start taking steroids. I run on footpaths.

(tis vvvqv btw but a certain other poster has hijacked me lol)

Veggiemummy · 03/07/2007 22:52

did 40mins on the windtrainer, i find it soooooo boring, but i can't find a good cycling route close to home were i don't have to stop at loads of traffic lights along the way.

Veggiemummy · 03/07/2007 23:04

has it been worse while you train? I think the way you are training should be perfect really, the walk run training is the best when you are getting started. If you are worried about the asthma maybe have a chat to your GP (if he is good) and he can keep an eye on you. But i think you should be fine. (It is amazing how many triathletes i see at races who have an inhaler strapped to their bikes just in case) You may even find your asthma improves as you get fitter. Swimming is supposed to be good for asthmatics lung function. I am just a bit biased towards swimming though.

TheDuchessOfNorks · 03/07/2007 23:23

Is that you vvv?

Glitterfairy has lost weight through running - she started in January I believe. If she doesn't turn up on this thread she might be on WWW 6 week bootcamp one.

I've lost about 5lb in 3 months but I only have a stone to lose which is usually quite hard.

Veggiemummy · 03/07/2007 23:26

hy did you have to change your name vvv?

Veggiemummy · 03/07/2007 23:28

i'd better go to bed i have a swim in the morning and possibly seeing Bob the Builder tomorrow.

Veggiemummy · 03/07/2007 23:29

that was supposed to be why not hy

VeniVidiVickiQV · 03/07/2007 23:58

Ah, because hunkermunker wanted to say hi to one or two people and borrowed my log in. We were using it at the same time.

ASthma is 'okay', imnot so worried about the asthma.

Glitterfairy - come and tell me how much weight you ahve lost !!!!

glitterfairy · 04/07/2007 08:15

Hiya VVV four stone but am having a hard time at the moment and eating rubbish. Was helped last night when my very own Dr Gillian aka Beety texted me with the succint text "STOP EATING RUBBISH!".

Am swimming today and revising my menus once more. I tend to exercise most days wiht a rest day once or twice a week. Running was very hard at first but is getting easier. I have done a 5k race and a 10k one now and am doing another 10k in September and a half marathon in October.

Beetroot · 04/07/2007 08:18

Glad it helped

mustrunmore · 04/07/2007 08:19

Could I be really nosey, and ask what your average food day is like? I want to compare, and see whe I need to buck my ideas up. I ws doing well, but seem to have 'dippped' a bit. Not sure why, as I was perfectly capable of eating 100% right before kids

glitterfairy · 04/07/2007 08:20

Tell you what I will do a menu for a couple of days which will help me as well. Will satrt tonight.

LOL Beets! My dd said well mum she is right after all and laughed her head off as I was eating a pancake at the time.

saggarmakersbottomknocker · 04/07/2007 08:44

glitter - it's a shame Twink isn't still around - she lost loads of weight like you. Quite inspirational really, started with a Race for Life and last time she posted properly here was running the London Marathon and Triathlons.

OP posts:
glitterfairy · 04/07/2007 09:29

Blimey that really is incredibly inspirational. Your name is like a name round here there is a saggars barn by the way.

Am going to swim today wiht my new gloves on whihc I got after motherinferior recommended in order to make my arms work harder in the pool. Have also ordered a swimming workout book for triathletes although I have no intention of ever doing one but it looked really interesting.

Pidge · 04/07/2007 10:00

quite inspired by all this talk of swimming - but don't know how you fit it in on top of running. I'm struggling to get back to doing 3 runs per week at the moment. And my foot problem is still niggling, so am being cautious.

VVVQV - I'm asthmatic too - I take a preventative inhaler daily, and usually take my ventolin before running. And I did the London marathon to raise money for Asthma! It doesn't really affect my running too much, though I have to be careful if it's really cold, or in hayfever season.

Pidge · 04/07/2007 10:03

On the weight and eating front - I know I'm lucky as I eat like a horse, and am only 5'4" and fairly small, but I did notice when I stopped runninng due to the foot injury that my middle expanded considerably. I have a serious blobby waist issue going on now and am even contemplating sit ups!

My personal rule is to inhale as much fruit and veg as I possibly can, and not to eat anything sweet/unhealthy until my mid afternoon chocolate fix, which I am trying to scale back in quantity!

Good luck.

VeniVidiVickiQV · 04/07/2007 10:08

I have been taking my preventer morning and night (although have got a bit lapse with it recently because when the symptoms slope off, I forget all about it). I do take some ventolin before I go out.

Its not helped by the fact that my lungs are probably more unhealthy than my legs.

Glitterfairy - if you could list an average few days menu that would be fantastic.

I tried my wedding dress on last night with the help of DP and there was a 3 inch gap at the top where the zip should do up..... DP looked horrified and suggested buying the next size up now so i wont be disappointed nearer the time. I know he meant well..... It just spurs me on though, coz i quite like to prove folk wrong

Veggiemummy · 04/07/2007 11:11

now that is the attitude that will make you fit the dress prove him wrong!

where do you tend to lose weight from first. I always lose it from my top half, i have a lovely set of love handles, and a wobbly belly, but i'm going to have to say goodbye to most of bras soon as i won't need at the rate that i am losing my boobs, also seem to be losing from other areas up top but i still have little bingo wings, not fair really.
