I go to a really small but fab running shop run by runners who are fanatics and try on about 20 different pairs until I find one and go arhhhhh yes!!!!!

Then I take them back and they try me on with others for my next pair.

TheDuchessOfNorks · 03/07/2007 15:55

Cool Wallace!

VVV - the sports shoe link that Popyscal has just posted is the same as my earlier (broken!) link.

Veggiemummy · 03/07/2007 17:06

can definately recommend going to a good running shop and getting them to try out different shoes on you, i am an asics foundation girl, have severe over pronation, but always have them fitted to me just to make sure they still are the best for my feet. Run and become is a great shop but have only been to the london and edinburgh branches not sure if they have others.

if you are an over pronator and your shoes are wrong you will get the aching bone pain you are talking about because of the impact your bones and knees are having to absorb, or something like that.

good on you for wanting to sort it out and keep going.

Veggiemummy · 03/07/2007 17:14

duchess i love your name, i think Norks is such a funny word makes me laugh everytime i see your name.

saggarmakersbottomknocker · 03/07/2007 17:15

Crikey it got busy here - welcome.

Popsy speaks The Truth re shoes. Skimp on everything else except shoes and sports bra (and I can even afford to skimp on that lol!)

I'm v jealous that everyone is getting out there despite the poor weather. My groin is a tad better - at least I can drive safely - so may test it out tomorrow. I know I need to run because my hip has started aching. It nags me when I'm not exercising.

there is something wrong with my legs
felt funny around 2 miles but slowed right down and kept going. Had a good 10 minute slow walk after my 3 and a bit miles and a good stretch but it feels funny. My shins ache. Not like the time with the wrong shoes but similar-ish.

Off to have a hot bath.

popsycal · 03/07/2007 17:23

actually in retrospect, I don't thikn I warmed up properly

also 5k in 29:02 isnt so bad with gammy legs lol

My blisters are still troubling me - any advice anyone?

Got my new Nike Triax trainers to help my knee pain, they have a built up arch to stop me overpronating. My knees are now great. My feet were fine for the first 50k, then the inside of the insole started rubbing away and I got blisters. I have new insoles now but am still getting blisters as my feet are still rubbing on the built up bit of the trainer. I am running with plasters now but still getting blisters.

So do I keep running and hope my feet toughen up, hubby reckons I will soom get callouses and then be ok

Do I stop running for a couple of weeks to let my feet heal and then try again? Previously had a 5day rest, but maybe that wasn't long enough. But don't want to lose my newly gained fitness..

Get new shoes, but they cost me £80!!!

VVVSzyslak · 03/07/2007 18:36

Aww thanks you lot. You have been v helpful.

A few more questions though....im in North London, where would I find a 'running shop'???

Secondly, how often is best - daily or every other day?

Thirdly, how quickly do you see results in terms of fitness levels, stamina, weight loss, muscle tone etc?

Veggiemummy · 03/07/2007 19:00

there is a shop in camden called Runners need 84 parkway and there is a triathlon shop in east finchley at 125 high road. have been to both and are good, very helpful.

every second day would be better as you need rest as much as training to get results. Muscle will only grow if you are resting. be patient butu you should be seeing small changes to you feeling of fitness in about 3 weeks, only small but they changes will be there.

Veggiemummy · 03/07/2007 19:09

didnt get out for swim this morning as my dh and ds are both unwell so on patting head and 'there, thereing' duty, so popped out to pool just now for a swim, the timetable said 'general swim' and have never been on a tuesday evening but they had carved the pool in half cross ways and also had one lane out for lessons, not sure why it was carved in half, anyway impossible to swim. Had my new ipod waterproof case and strap thing and was all ready to go. anyway back home now and will do a session on the windtrainer and hopefully swim tomorrow morning?!?!

VVVSzyslak · 03/07/2007 19:12

Thanks VM.

VVV following the advice of the lovely MNetters i went to sweatshop in Teddington, i am in north east london, teddington is south west, so as you can imagine it took me a long time via tube/overground, but it was worth it! They got me hopping and running up and down the shop barefooted, while the man watched my ankles/feet etc, then the told me exactly the kind of shoe i needed and off he went to get them. I ended up trying on about 7 pairs and running down the shop in each pair for him to say "no, they arent the ones" until finally he said "They are perfect" I bought that pair and they are excellent, i dont have any pains anymore! They also have branches in covent garden and harrods, but i have been told that the teddington one is best.

Today i MADE myself get onto the treadmil, and i only managed 10 mins but it has really helped, and i am not really very sore anymore! Yay! So on with my 11 week 1/2 marathon plan, then i need my head seeing to!!

sarz · 03/07/2007 19:36

Also VVV why dont you check out the Bupa training plans, they are very good and structured!
start with 5k fun run You dont have to do a race at the end but maybe that will be a good motivation!

popsycal · 03/07/2007 20:04

stripeyknickers - I have the triax shoes too.....you need to look on sportsshoes.com - they have old 'models' of triax on there...the ones i got are now 24.99 but only in certain sizes....the next oldest are 39.99 but again only in certain sizes.....
