Hi veggiemum - tell us more!

sarz - gentle swimming is probably a good idea - get the pressure of your joints etc. Hope you feel better soon.

I don't suppose this damp weather is helping us, is it?

DoubleBluff · 02/07/2007 20:40

Got race results for my 10k, I came 50th out of 57.
12th out of 17 women. Not so bad I suppose.
Am ntering a half marathon Oct 29th and looking for another 10k in Sept.
Am planning on getting up at 6 am to run ad get it out of the way. Wish me luck!

Veggiemummy · 02/07/2007 21:34

used to train loads and did about 3 tri's and a couple of 10kms a season, did the 2003 london marathon and enjoyed it but missed the bike and swimming training.

then had my lovely ds in august 2005, took a bit of time off training but managed a sprint and olympic tri and a couple of 10kms but very crap times and found training difficult as didnt want to be away from my boy too long. (and was a little sleepy with breastfeeding and broken nights ds didnt sleep through til 18mths)

I am loving being a mum Ds is nearly 2 and will have another at some stage but for now would like to get back to training being a big part of my life again, just finding time to do it which doesn't take time from my ds and dh. My dh is great (also triathlete though taking time out to do kickboxing this year) he looks after ds in the mornings so i can train but i have never been a morning person so finding that difficult. Have finally gotten a gym membership to a place that has a creche but ds not keen yet on creche so need to do a settling in period (i'm a sahm).

anything else oh i'm aussie but have been here nearly 10 years and am currently waiting for my naturalisation to come through.

DoubleBluff · 02/07/2007 21:35

You were in the olympics did you say?
Phew!

Veggiemummy · 02/07/2007 21:43

not quite, an olympic distance tri i think they also call them classic distance.

I always thought i should take up bowls so that when i'm 80 i would be really good and represent australian in the olympics.

mustrunmore · 02/07/2007 21:53

Well I've done nothing today Really menat to, but then it was soo torrential, and couldnt do treadmill as ds1 was still up and in mad mode, so I ended up doing chores and odd bits and bobs, and just hacvent run somehow But I'll definitely run in the morning, as it'll mean I get to avoid toddler group; dh will take them before work

Veggiemummy · 02/07/2007 22:02

right if your going to get up for a run i'm going to get my butt out of bed in the morning for a swim.

My tri is in one month and i have downgraded my aim from a sub 2.45hr time to just looking good in my tri outfit. so if i'm gonna lose these bingo wings i'm need to get swimming more than once a week.

MingMingtheWonderPet · 02/07/2007 22:11

Welcome to you Veggiemummy.
Hope you enjoy that swim tomorrow.
It can be very hard to fit any kind of trainig in around family life, but it does get easier and it feels great to be doing something. I struggle to fit in netball and running, and one or the other is always taking a back seat while I try my best to concentrate on the other for a while.
DH is keen on tris too, has done London Tri before, and this year is doing Seaford and then a half Ironman in the New Forest area.
Anyway, enjoy our supportive thread

Veggiemummy · 02/07/2007 22:19

oh i love seaford it is my favourite tri, i am thinking that i might do it this year but will see how London goes. last year was a bit nasty weather wise so they had to cancel the swim, which is my fav leg so was not any advantage to have to do a 5km run instead of the swim. but was a good excuse for taking well over 3 hours to do the thing, having to cycling through driving rain...well a nasty drizzle anyway, but it was very windy so it made the drizzle come down at an angle.

Veggiemummy · 02/07/2007 22:20

oh just read the half iron man bit he is very hardcore then

TheDuchessOfNorks · 02/07/2007 22:23

It certainly is hard to fit training around family life - I've only started running this year because DD2 started pre-school at Easter and I have 2 free mornings per week for longer runs.

I like your Australian Olympic bowls idea Veggie - I'm quite a good shot and have often thought I could try out for the British team later in life. After all, shooting things is terribly British (as is being a mad old bat).

Veggiemummy · 02/07/2007 22:30

Well we might face each other on the green, may the best old bat win.

Veggiemummy · 02/07/2007 22:31

i'm off to bed nice to meet you chat tomorrow hopefully will have been for promised swim.

DoubleBluff · 02/07/2007 22:55

G'night off to get my zzz's in before my 6 am alarm!

glitterfairy · 02/07/2007 23:11

Blimey its been buys here tonight. Hello veggiemum. Back to trianing tomorrow and doublebluff we are doing our halves about the same time so can train virtually together!

TheDuchessOfNorks · 03/07/2007 11:06

I did my 5k this morning. In the pouring rain. First 2k was really hard work but the last 3 were easy and I could have carried on but settled for a 1k cooling down walk instead and some stretches etc.

My sports bra doesn't leave much to the imagination when it's soaking wet and the puddles were so huge that I had to run straight through them, so I had really wet feet too.

Am now showered, watered and DH has kindly given my shins a massage but I can still feel my muscles beginning to hurt!

VVVSzyslak · 03/07/2007 11:24

Hello folks. Am hoping you can help me.

I've just started doing some walking interspersed with jogging, ie walk a bit, then jog for a bit, then walk etc. This is so i can build up slowly. I am doing a set route that takes 20 minutes and then, when i start coming back 5 minutes earlier, then i'll extend the route. Ive done 4 days in the last week, but hope to go out most days.

Anyway, I've been doing this for only a week, and today my shins are REALLY painful. They feel bruised and achey. What on earth is it? Am I doing something wrong? I thought I was building up slowly by walking and jogging little bits. Help!!!!

popsycal · 03/07/2007 12:05

Shoes - which shoes do you have?
And welcome btw

TheDuchessOfNorks · 03/07/2007 12:43

Good shoe advice on this site There are different shoes to suit how your foot hits the ground - most runners are 'over-pronators' which means most of your weight is on the inside of your foot. So any prolonged walking & running in an unsupporting shoe will cause your shins to ache. M&Mdirect (sorry no link) have cheap trainers online. And sorry if you already know all of this!!!

If your trainers are OK then your shins may still ache because they're adjusting to the exercise - even though you've started gradually. It's also good to rotate your joints & stretch muscles before starting. There are good training plans with warming up/cooling down advice on the Race for Life or Bupa run websites.

Oh yes, and welcome to the running thread

VVVSzyslak · 03/07/2007 13:34

Thank you! I cant view that link at work so will try when I get home.

I am overweight, so I know I am probably asking a lot of my poor legs

I have always (although cant say for sure now) run bearing weight on the outside of my foot. Back in the days when I used to do athletics at school, my most regular injury was a sprain due to my foot rolling outwards whilst doing, pretty much anything, lol!

My shoes probably arent the best. They are kappa trainers, probably a tennis style shoe, which I thought would be okay for the walking and mild jogging but clearly not.

What is concerning me is that the pain is not muscle pain (I had that on the outer shins a few days after I started), it is actually on the bone, and is like its bruised, but, without the bruising. Will have to look into new shoes. Im thinking i may have to introduce cycling over jogging for a while, to help reduce pressure. What do you think?

popsycal · 03/07/2007 13:43

i had this
trainers

VVVSzyslak · 03/07/2007 13:43

???

mustrunmore · 03/07/2007 13:44

Hello

I managed to avoid the rain this morning. Did 5.2km, which left time to get home and wash my hair, much to dh's disgust, as he ended up staying for the whole of toddler group; he thought I'd be up to relieve him after 40 mins or so
I've donr that route3 times now, and I'm bored of it already Time to find a different one, and add a bit more distance on to it while I'm at it.

VVVSzyslak · 03/07/2007 13:45

oh i getcha....

you had this and changed your trainers, lol!

popsycal · 03/07/2007 13:45

the same pain - caused bby the wrong trainers
