wallace - I am still breastfeeding too - but not much and ds2 is a toddler....

TranquilaManana · 24/06/2007 20:20

hello ladies
im v impressed with all this exercise stuff
not done much, myself.
lucky im not the size of a house really.
anyway; am planning to do 5k run for life next w/end
havnt run much for the last...oooh...ever.
am going to do it in my mbt's and am not going to be upset if i have to walk some, run some...
do you think i'll die? or will it be a piece of piss? (anything in between that is ok i guess. actually dying might be a bummer. but at least id get some peace i spose...)

any words of wisdom (realise may be too late for that) are appreciated.

ta

TheDuchessOfNorks · 25/06/2007 00:48

Tranquil - as long as you're happy walking & running you'll be just fine - it's only 3 miles, no further than a good shopping session.

Is it a very hilly course though? What are MBTs like for running? I have to wear enormous-padded-with-air-and-gel-broken-knees-old-woman trainers.

glitterfairy · 25/06/2007 07:36

Popsy I would just run if I were you.

Devious well done that is brilliant.

Am going to swim this morning and see if it clears up just a little to run in the rain later it is a downpour at the moment.

popsycal · 25/06/2007 08:27

I think I might just run. Am wondering what the logic of me doing 'run 20 walk 5 run 20' is.....that would be over 4 miles for me.

Anyway. It is raining. DH is off today and DS1 off school with a vomitting bug. But I think I may go out for a run in a bit

popsycal · 25/06/2007 10:17

OK so you were right - I can run without stopping. In fact, i can run 3.5 miles without stopping and still had it in me to sprint the last stretch - well, 'sprint' would be highly inaccurate, but I did pick up the pace for my 'home stretch'
It is cold out today which helped actually. And wet. And windy.

3.5 miles in 33:26. And the 3 mile point was roughly 29:30ish.

Now will I get a shower - ds1 vomitting on and off and ds2 here aswell.....

popsycal · 25/06/2007 10:22

Ok - so now I need to revise the next three weeks. Any suggestions as I have no idea.

Do I extend the llength of the run? Or do I keep doing it but try to get faster? Do I alternate longer runs with shorter ones?

glitterfairy · 25/06/2007 10:38

I would extend the length Popsy and add ten percent distance to your running each week. Try to vary things as well with hills to build strength and some speed work and then some stamina.

You have done really really well and are an inspiration. I am just off out to run after 40 minutes in the pool to warm up this morning. It is pouring down and windy so will get throughly wet but only doing two miles today.

TranquilaManana · 25/06/2007 10:51

thanks duchess. i think sounds do-able. should be fine

mbts seem pretty good for running to me as they kind of make you rock the foot instead of thudding down every step and they are indeed highly padded and sort of cushiony...

TheDuchessOfNorks · 25/06/2007 10:55

popsycal - that's a good time. Well done. I have absolutely no advice on how you should progress though.

I did 3k in the lovely cold wet & windy weather today. Didn't time it though which is annoying because I had a group of women runners hard on my heels so I think I ran the whole thing quite fast! Was very red in the face even after my cool down - which was very cooling due to a brief but extremely heavy downpour.

DeviousDaffodil · 25/06/2007 11:35

Good running popsy. I would try and run for longer / further first. Then work on speed.
You are all very good this morning I am resting today but will get back to it tomorrow. Vile weather.
Tranquil I am not familiar with mbts but if they are not designed for running in I would be careful as you could do yourself a mischief!

glitterfairy · 25/06/2007 12:17

Ran two miles in the rain after my 40 minutes swim so am putting my sluggishness down to that. If the weather is better tomorrow may try a five mile as am going out on Saturday for two hour run with friend!

glitterfairy · 25/06/2007 12:18

mbts

popsycal · 25/06/2007 12:19

two hours?!?!?!!??
crazy lady

I am pondering things. 3 weeks. Last week is taken care of. What to do for this week and next given I can do over 3 miles without stopping ;)

glitterfairy · 25/06/2007 12:28

Enjoy yourself. You know you can do it so now just run for fun and enjoy. Put yourself down for another race. I find that helps.

LOL my two hours is because I am building up to a half marathon in October ( my trainer is going with me and he is from the army so know I will have to wrok hard). I also want a much faster 10k in September where I will be raising money for my dads radiotherapy unit.

Saggarmakersbottomknocker · 25/06/2007 16:32

Popsy - I won't say I told you so but...

I told you so

Agree with glitter just mix it up a bit. Hills and shorter, faster runs but extending your longer run 'til you reach your 10k distance.

mustrunmore · 25/06/2007 16:39

Well done popsy

Not got alot to add really as I havent run for 3 days..., ill ,then got offered free tickets to see Aerosmith last night ; took the boys too, and it was excellent! Must do some kind of exercise tonight, although all I really want to do is have a bath and catch up on some sleep. Even ds1 fell asleeep in nursery today

TheDuchessOfNorks · 25/06/2007 17:15

glitterfairy - you is an addict

Race for Life are all closed within 1 hours drive of home - what other 5k's are there?

I'm not doing any 10k until next year. If ever...!

StripeyKnickersSpottySocks · 25/06/2007 19:20

Popsy - I'm at the same place as you in my training, down to the mileage and near enough exact time.

I'm planning to up my mileage now - want to do 7k next week.

glitterfairy · 25/06/2007 19:40

Realbuzz has races in your area and you can choose which one, road, track or whatever and distance. I use a race site for the North West and it has the races round here wiht the results up as well.

Duchess you are right. Today I am so much happier and brighter because I ran. Feel like new again.

I find I do lose weight too but then I am quite strict wiht myself when I am on track.

popsycal · 25/06/2007 20:14

Glitter - I have just found the realbuzz site but cant see where the races are listed.

Stripy - we may be twins! Have you done your 5k? Or is it a 10K you are training for?

popsycal · 25/06/2007 20:16

just re-read stripey - you hev already done your race for life

TheDuchessOfNorks · 25/06/2007 23:37

glitter - I looked at RealBuzz too and couldn't find race listings either?? Lots of other useful stuff though.

popsycal · 26/06/2007 06:57

think i need to calm myself down
considering going to do a quick 1 mile RIGHT NOW.....

Wallace · 26/06/2007 07:21

go for it

I often go out for a run grumpy and tired, and come back refreshed and cheerful
