Hooray, I'm a runner!

I did my first coninuous mile. 10 mins 30 secs, which is okay I think? The socond mile was a combination of running and walking. I still felt good after my first mile so I didn't stop, and continued running for another 4 minutes (felt like I could have gone for longer, but didn't want to push it), and walked for 2. Then ran the rest of the second mile. My 2 mile time was 22mins 15 secs

glitterfairy · 17/06/2007 12:43

Well done Wallace. I reckon if you slowed down a bit you could run two miles easily wihtout any walking. My eldest was running very fast but walking as well. So I ran with her and made her slow down and she ran two miles easily.

Wallace · 17/06/2007 12:45

thanks I hope you're right because next weekend I have to run 2 miles (according to my schedule), then the week after I have a 5k fun run!

DeviousDaffodil · 17/06/2007 13:06

Well done Wallace you are making good progress.
Tahnks for advice. Am not drinking alcohol all week (torture) and plan on early to bed too. I feel like a proper athlete (fnar fnar!)

popsycal · 17/06/2007 14:06

Glitterfairy - I may well take you up on the great north run 2008 challenge
I live only a few miles from the start so quite handy

I just had a bit of a rubbish run. It is hot and muggy but dull here and I did not enjoy the second half. I am getting no sleep and I think it is catchin up on me. Anyway. WAs meant to be doing 15 mins run 3 mins walk 15 mins run.

First 15 mins was great - and when I drove the route in the car afterwards, it was bang on 1.7 miles. Then I walked for 3 mins and just could not get back into my stride again. The second 15 min leg I ended up having a couple of 20 seconds walks and lost all motivation before the end and went home a few minutes early.

I am wondering though. The last few runs I have done - I seem to really lose my rhythm after walking. I am going to go for 2 miles continuous running next time - which is what the programme suggests and just slow down a little bit.

Wallace - well done!!
Beety - sounds like fun!!

Lilliput - the edinburgh winter one - it is one of the 'Great' runs. Will find you a link

Lilliput · 17/06/2007 16:51

another edinburgh run but not sure when it is

Lilliput · 17/06/2007 18:07

I will keep an eye out for it, I'm possibly doing a 10k in Dumfries in September, my training partner (I use that term very loosely) is talking me into it!

popsycal · 17/06/2007 19:38

ds1 has been begging me to let him come running with me. He will be 5 in August. I am tempted to do a really short run with him. But what should he wear on his feet - he only has 'fashion' trainers really.

DeviousDaffodil · 17/06/2007 20:09

Sometimes DS1 comes with me on his bike. He thinks he is very grown up!

Pidge · 17/06/2007 21:02

I'd be on for GNR 2008, but rather hoping I might be pregnant with baby number 3 by then (talk about planning ahead ).

I spent a ridiculous sum of money on running shoes on Friday, hoping to sort out my foot problem, plus the fact that my last shoes wore out in less than 200 miles (apparently I have weirdly boney heels!!!).

I managed 50 minutes today in the new shoes and felt pretty good. What's better I felt bionic all day. I'd forgotten that amazing buzz you get from doing a proper run. Hopefully I'm out of my post marathon slump and back on track for my club's 5 mile champs in two weeks. Not that I'll be on PB form, but hopefully up for a potter round.

popsycal · 17/06/2007 21:26

ohhhh pidge - more babies!!! waaaay more exciting than running

mustrunmore · 17/06/2007 21:45

Having a third baby would finish my body off totally!! I'd much rather be able to do GNR!
Managed to get 2 runs in today . 6km treadmill this morning, then about 30mins round the park with a friend(forgot stopwatch, doh!)
We watched a load of footage from when ds2 was born today, and I was huge just after . But having said that, the recent footage doesnt look much better

Ds1 is 3.5, and he gets to have a go on the treadmill after me if he's been a good boy He did 5 mins 'running' at 5 the other day, and 2 mins hill walk on incline of 12. He was chuffed! Then he showed me some yoga positions he'd invented

glitterfairy · 17/06/2007 22:23

There are no running shoes for kids which is pants! They usually start at a size four. My youngest is 8 and has been running with me over a mile and two miles now. We walk when she wants to though. I would do little runs with him and just buy him trainers. After a while it gets really annoying that the kids can out run you so easily by the way but running with your kids is great.

All of mine do fun runs whilst I do my 5 and 10k and really enjoy them adn my ds is getting really good now. Two miles in ten minutes is his record.

popsycal · 17/06/2007 22:26

wow glitter - your ds is FAST!!!!!
Think I might take ds1 out next weeks - just a very very short jog bless him.. he is nagging ad nagging

glitterfairy · 18/06/2007 07:35

JOg/Walk popsy just as we all started and he will love it. My view is with rising child obesity and general sit and watch tvdom in kids this gives them a head start in developing good habits for life.

THere is evidence in girls that if they see their mum exercising then they also exercise and as a role model running adn doing races is a good one even if like me you come in last!

Wallace · 18/06/2007 07:48

My running shoes are junior ones (size 3 they are addidas ones - the only ones i could find in my size! don't know how small they come though.

StripeyKnickersSpottySocks · 18/06/2007 10:30

Ouch, ouch ouch.

I went for a run this morning wearing my newish Nike Triax trainers. I've run about 50k in them so far and they have been fine, not a single blister twinge.

Today did a slightly shorter run than normal as my trainers were hurting my feet - both feet i nthe same place. On the edge of the inside of my foot, by the arch. Got home and I have a blister on both feet in the same place, am really worried that my £80 trainers are no good for me. Had a look inside my trainers and they look like a bit of the inside/lining of the trainer on the arch support bit is rubbing away and is rough now. Do I take them back or persevere?

glitterfairy · 18/06/2007 12:06

Take them back I reckon and see if the shop can come up with something better.

Wallace thank you I will look out for them for my kids.

I went out today and did some hill reps. Three times up a horrid little hill near me which three months ago I could hardly walk up. I also ran my first mile as fast as possible and did some increasing speed in it then slowing down. Am going to vary my running a bit like this this week. I am working up to a 10 miler at the weekend.

popsycal · 18/06/2007 13:16

glitterfairy - I saw some kiddies' running shoes in size 13 I think - will see whether I can find them again

Hi all - sorry to jump in to your thread but I'm hoping some of you may be able to help me. I've just posted a question in Health about baby joggers - if you have one I'd be really grateful if you could look at my question and let me know what you think about them. Thanks v. much and sorry to hijack!!! Link here www.mumsnet.com/Talk?topicid=138&threadid=341321& amp;stamp=070618133443

popsycal · 18/06/2007 17:55

Well! I just did my first continuous 2 mile run (bar a bit of kerb tottering a few times to let cars past). Did it in just over 19 minutes!

I actually enjoyed it more not having to look at my clock all the time and counting down. Knowing a couldn't stop running until a definite physical point rather than a time interval.

Also, I did a little 1km jog with ds1 (almost 5) who has been bugging me for weeks to run with him. We ran in a little 1km loop, walking to one lamp post then running to the next. It was great fun. He made me show him how to do all the stretches afterwards too
