Do you have a treadmill at home?

DeviousDaffodil · 16/06/2007 16:49

No I wish. My workplace has a gym and is 2 mins drive away. I can access it anytime.

glitterfairy · 16/06/2007 16:52

Still that is pretty good. I dont like the treadmill it is boring and I sweat more. Also I can run 8 minute miles on the treadmill but out in the real world I am doing 12 minute ones! So I think roads are better tests if that is where you are going to race.

I will probably use the treadmill in the really bad weather of winter. I dont mind rain it is the wind I loathe.

DeviousDaffodil · 16/06/2007 16:54

Don't min d a bit of rain, but it is lashing it down here. Would much much rather run outside. Hate the wind too, esp when running against it!!

glitterfairy · 16/06/2007 16:58

Lashing down is also bad but wind is my real enemy. I wasnt keen on very icy either as I was frightened of slipping on the downhills.

So treadmill for those occasions then. You are lucky it is so near. Some people think you should use the treadmill one session a week in any case to save your knees.

popsycal · 16/06/2007 17:03

i read that you should put a treadmill on a 1% hill to liken it more to road running..

glitterfairy · 16/06/2007 17:13

I cant run on it flat, it feels all wrong so it is always on an incline. Ran at 3.5% and average of 2 yesterday. I prefer a slight incline on the road in any case to flat.

How are you popsy? Have you done any running this weekend it might help.

popsycal · 16/06/2007 17:23

I had a great run yesterday in the puring rain. Been teaching 3 hours of dancing today so that's my exercise

Going to do a run in the morning I think....although I want to go out tonight, I ought to wait until tomorrow really.

DeviousDaffodil · 16/06/2007 19:42

Did 5k on th treadmill, took me 33 mins and was really hard work. Much prefer road running.

popsycal · 16/06/2007 21:17

I have also decided.
Our local pool has a little gym. Now I used to love the gym pre-kids but can't commit or afford it now. BUt I get big discount being a Local Authority employee so I am going to go and do the induction. It is 'pay as you go' so am going to try for a session a week

popsycal · 17/06/2007 07:53

I sat last night and read the whole of the old thread. Pidge - I was amazed at progress you made!

DH was laughing at me last night. I was rabbiting on about running and my secret goal for the Race for Life. Then I was going on about the 10K. And rhen a 10K winter run in edinburgh that has caught my eye. Then the Blaydon RAce (but you are not allowed to be a 'fun runner' for it. .Then the Great North RUn in 2008. Think I am getting a little carried away. Also, there is a good running club near me which seems really inclusive and I thought that after I can manage 10K, that I might join.......they meet about a 5 minute walk away from where I live.

Saggarmakersbottomknocker · 17/06/2007 07:59

Popsy - I hate to tell you this but you're hooked.

You ain't never getting away

I started just like you - except there was a group of 5 of us. I'd always hated running. Eight years on there's only me left of the original group, I found a new runing friend and we started going further, the others fell by the wayside.......

popsycal · 17/06/2007 08:10

I know....
Just looked at my local running clubs website and they do a beginners' group on a Tuesday night......which is a bad night for me at the minute but may change in September if my work days change. That is when the 10k is aswell......

Hmmmm

mustrunmore · 17/06/2007 09:08

Do aim for the Great North; its a fantastic run But get a posh hotel for the night after, so you can relax in the pool/sauna etc I'd love to do it again one day, but I'm being realistic.
I was thinking about the same situation re a gym, as its £22 induction and about £4 pay as you go. But its about 40 mins on the bus each way, which really cuts into the evening, given that I couldnt leave here till 6.15pm at best, and that'd be every other week due to dh's shifts. Or could meet him and hand kids over at soft play as its closer and by ds1's nursery, but then that means more expense of entrance fee and feeding them there!

I've promised myself now that I wont have less than an incline of 2 when I do treadmill now, as thats what I always used to do, and I dont know why I just went for flat when I started bback up.

BeatrootandBenedick · 17/06/2007 09:25

I ran the second leg of the South Down Marathon relay yesterday. My time was 53 min. There was a horrendous climb at the start which I took ages to recover from.

Overall it was such an exhilarating experience. We are going to do it next year - and cut the time!!

BeatrootandBenedick · 17/06/2007 09:25

oh - my leg was 5.5

Lilliput · 17/06/2007 09:25

Popsycal - What's the 10k in Edinburgh? I did Race for Life in Edinburgh, I'm not that far away and am looking for a 10k later in the year.

DeviousDaffodil · 17/06/2007 09:59

Ok some advice.
I am doing a 10k next Sunday ( flip)
I ran 5k (badly) yesterday.
How much training should I do now?
Was planiing on a short run tomorrow, about 5 miles on Weds and a shorter one on Fri.
What do you think?
Also what should I eat say the night before and on the morning of the race?
Am a race virgin so any advice would be appreciated, thanks.

glitterfairy · 17/06/2007 11:07

Beets well done and if you need another runner next year I will do it as well.

Popsy why dont we all aim for a meet up at the Great North 2008? I am doing a half marathon in october so would be fine to do the great north in 2008 as I want to do a year of halfs then aim to up to marathons.

Devious before my 10k I ran 7 miles the Sunday before and had done so three times so I knew I could do the distance. You shouldnt really do too much this week to keep your legs fresh but 5 miles and a two miler on Friday sound fine to me. I ate porridge with honey the morning of my race and did not get my usual runners tummy. I made sure I ate it two hours before the race and also took a banana for after.

It was really really hot and I was one of about four runners with water which I really needed so take a running belt wiht some on if it is hot as not all races have water stops. Do not let the whole thing get you carried away and dont go off faster than you would normally run. I was thrid from last but 6 runers had to be escorted home becasue of fainting in the heat and throwing up and I finished on a sprint not breathing hard and able to carry on talking.

Hope that helps.

DeviousDaffodil · 17/06/2007 11:21

Thanks Glitter. Am so unprepared for it really, it has crept up on me and am now panicking!

BeatrootandBenedick · 17/06/2007 11:40

I would not run on Friday if you are doing a race on Saturday.

BeatrootandBenedick · 17/06/2007 11:40

I would do short one of thurs or very slow longer one .

and one on mon/tues

BeatrootandBenedick · 17/06/2007 11:42

I always see runners eating bananas.

BeatrootandBenedick · 17/06/2007 11:43

I made a juice
1 banana
4 dates
1/2 t of mauka honey
apples and celery and drank this a hour before and after -

glitterfairy · 17/06/2007 12:26

The race is Sunday Beets so she is fine doing a run Friday and then rest rest rest Saturday. Be sure to have enough sleep.

Races do tend to creep up on you though at times. Best of luck I am sure you will be fine and the high afterwards is great.
