Well done Remind me when your 5k is?

popsycal · 06/06/2007 20:34

not until 15th july

Wallace · 06/06/2007 20:36

You'll find the 5k so easy by then! My 5k is july 1st.

How are your knees? Mine just suddenly stopped hurting

popsycal · 06/06/2007 20:37

mine are fine - combination of correct shoes and not doing 'bouncy; running I think - have to consciously remember to 'creep' rather than 'jog' though

popsycal · 06/06/2007 21:24

Popsycal well done you. Am getting a little nervous now about my 10k on Sunday as it looks like it will be hot!

Gizmo · 07/06/2007 08:10

Wow Glitterfairy

That's great! I shall see if I can memorise them and chant them as a mantra every morning.

I'm kind of aware that I am a bit more stressed than usual, and my weight is creeping up very slowly, so I just need to decide to do something about it. Bleurgh...

mustrunmore · 07/06/2007 17:30

I keep seeing 10k posters everywhere, but I know I'm not up to it yet I'd love to just go for it! Mind you, I've got my 5km down to 27 mins 49s, so thats better. Its a post-kids pb, if not a real one! I also weighed myself today and i''ve lost 6lbs The first weight I've lost in the 15 months since ds2 was born I've had a couple of non or bad running days; dh has just had the snip, so he cant loook after the kids, our lodger's been around alot etc etc. But I'm hoping for a good long run tonight; it'll be at least 9pm before i can start though...

popsycal · 07/06/2007 18:15

Have conneda colleague of mine into signing up for the 10K too. It was her who motivated me to start running and she is now regretting it

I have to stop being so competitive with myself though. Need to stop timing miles. However, I like to measure the route that I do so that I know how far I have done overall and tend to run the same routes and know when a mile is.......

Wallace · 08/06/2007 21:43

Had a lovely run yesterday evening. Had had a very long and busy day and I was exhausted. However I stick rigidly to my plan (no copping out!) so I made my self go out.

It started pouring the second I set foot outside the door too But it was great. I really got into a good rhythm and I think I was running faster. I was doing 7 mins running, 2 walking (3 times), but I felt like I could have just run and run.

When I got home I was refreshed and happy

I love running!

popsycal · 08/06/2007 21:54

well i had a crappy one today. I had been at work, then took ds1 to swimming lesson and didnt get back til almost then went straight out. I was supposed to do two lots of 15 mins with a 2 min walk in between. First 15 mins fine, and decided to do 3 minute walk but just couldnt get back into it. It wasn't hard as such, I just felt really sluggish.

The plan jumped from 10 mins of running straight to 15. I can do 3.5 miles with a combination of running and walking but I think this was too big a jump. I also hadn't eaten since lunchtime and had a dreadful night with ds2.

Anyway - i am going to back step a bit and try for 12 mins runing blocks next time

Wallace · 08/06/2007 21:57

that is a big jump!

Were yuo doing that thing where you try not to look at the stopwatch for as long as you can because you want to be almost done byt he time you look. And then you look and your time isn't even half over and then you feel knackered!

Or is that just me, LOL

popsycal · 08/06/2007 22:02

That is EXACTLY what I do!
'I won't look until the lampost. No - I won't look until the next bus stop....' etc!!!

The last 15 mins were a compete washout and i totally lost my rhythm and my legs felt heavy too. I really could not be bothered with it.

I am kind of half way between prgrammes......pretty much done the 'walk run walk' one from the race for life site and moving on to the 'run easy' one. Also keep glancing at the bupa one......which would have had me runnin 25 mins continuously!!!!
hmmm

Wallace · 08/06/2007 22:06

Glad it isn't just me

I find if I think about running when I am running I lose my rhythm, but if I am deep in thought, I forget I am running.

Gizmo · 08/06/2007 22:15

Ah the old 'I'm not looking, no you can't make me' routine. I have been known to take my watch off and stuff it down my bra in order to try and avoid glancing at it every 15 seconds

If it's really getting grim and you have 0 energy I often go out for a run without watch or idea of distance. Just pick the prettiest/most interesting route I can think of and go out for fun - fast or slow as feels good. In fact, thanks to Glitterfairy's inspiration that's what I did last night and, hopefully, again tomorrow. Thanks GF/Pidge!

glitterfairy · 09/06/2007 18:29

Its actually not a bad thing to do to take your watch off and let your body dictate when you stop and how long you go for. It also stops me stresing about speed. For now I just want the endurance.

Am starting to get a little bit nervous now about my 10k tomorrow mainly will there be parking and how will I get there and what will the kids do when they have finished their two mile fun run.

StripeyKnickersSpottySocks · 09/06/2007 23:05

I try and avoid looking at my watch as well, just feel disheartned if I look, thinking I've been running ages and its 5mins!

Today I hit a milestone. I ran for 30mins without walking. I am so thrilled. I then walked 1min and ran another 5. I'm concentrating on building my distance and endurance up at the minute, rather than speed. Never thought aI'd be able to manage 30mins. Am so happy.

Good luck for tommorrow GlitterFairy.

Lilliput · 10/06/2007 11:40

I've just had a great run. Out for 30mins, fat boy slim and scissor sisters on my ipod, not to hot not too cold, beautiful countryside (new route) and not a soul in sight. I feel fab and could have kept going but it was circular route starting from home.
Time for a nice hot shower.

glitterfairy · 10/06/2007 15:14

DId my 10k in one hour and twenty minutes. I have a slight sore throat and it was extremely hot at 28/29 degrees and midday. Five runners fainted and were throwing up so I am just glad I got round as it was my first ever 10k. At least I wasnt last but it was a lonely run at the back.

I feel good now adn I got a medal which is brill I may not take it off ever! My next 10k is in September so I am hoping for a better time then.

Wallace · 10/06/2007 15:24

Well done

Lilliput · 10/06/2007 16:12

Well done glitterfairy! I'm thinking about doing a 10k in September but I'm not too sure how to up my training for it. I run three times a week and over the last couple of weeks have been doing about 4-5k plus I did Race for Life last Sunday. Really don't know what to do now. Any wisdon from anyone?

glitterfairy · 10/06/2007 16:19

Thanks for the congratulations! I have done a 7 miler each Sunday for the last month and am really glad as frankly it couldnt have been hotter (perhaps I understand a little tiny bit how people felt on the marathon).

I have done a couple of five mile runs during the week and some fast two milers (fast for me that is) really my advice would be to enjoy your running. By September it will be a breeze if you are now at the stage you say.

I am doing another 10k then and will be looking to improve my time this time but am now training for a half marathon in October.

The runners world book is fab and packed with top tips. I am vaguely considering joining a club but most of them are rather a long way away.

Lilliput · 10/06/2007 16:21

Did you get the runners world book from the website or can you get it from amazon?

glitterfairy · 10/06/2007 16:24

Borders. Found it on the shelf it is the runners world complete book of running for beginners and is great really great.

popsycal · 10/06/2007 17:05
