I had a great run yesterday, did 3.2k and only ran for 1min in the middle - normally I'd have 2 sometimes 3 walking breaks.

It took me 22mins which I know is slow but I'm concentrating on upping my distance and stamina now, not my speed. So Tuesday I'm going to run 4k.

popsycal · 27/05/2007 17:26

thats 2 miles
that is good going

themoon66 · 28/05/2007 00:34

3.2 miles in 22 mins is bloody fantastic. It would take me nearly 30 mins to do that. Well done!

popsycal · 28/05/2007 06:02

3.2k i think.....still fantastic!!!

popsycal · 28/05/2007 07:32

A quick question....
On my training thing it says to leave 24 hours at least between each session. Does that mean literally 24 hours or have a day off?

After not been able to do much for a while, I am keen to catch up with myself.....

mustrunmore · 28/05/2007 09:02

Ah, nice to catch up on this thread and see lots of good news
I seem to be ok re ankle now, and have clawed my way back up from being rubbish after my weekend away. Am back to 28.5 mins for 5km (which I'm not happy with in the scheme of things, but its nearly the best I've done since ds2 was born). Didnt run last night though, as had a day in London with the boys, got in 7pm, put them in bed by 7.20pm, then fell asleep myself till after 9! But I really need to find the motivation for some longer runs; I should be doing many more hour long ones again by now.

StripeyKnickersSpottySocks · 28/05/2007 12:07

Yeah, 3.2k not miles. Although I did do the race for life in 29mins. Its amazing how faster you run in a race situation like that, wouldn't be able to do it normally I don't think.

Popsy - I don't take it as literally 24hours, just have a rest day. Should be fine.

hattie2 · 28/05/2007 12:20

I'm normally a bit of a fair weather runner but persuaded myself to go out for half an hour yesterday despite it peeing it down and ... it was great!! Nice and cool and not many people around, I'm almost tempted to go out in the rain again today!

2boysmacca · 28/05/2007 13:43

I've just done the very same thing, only I accounted for the pouring rain, but not the wind. My arms and hands nearly froze off. However I did manage 5.1k in 29m 30 secs, on a very hilly terrain (half of it was perhaps a 4/5 incline). I am very pleased with it. But my SPD is not going away and it was quite painful after the first mile

StripeyKnickersSpottySocks · 28/05/2007 20:03

I quite like running in the rain as well.

popsycal · 29/05/2007 18:11

2.65 miles in the rain in just under 27 mins.....longer running intervals too

knees fine - hurray!!!
'creeping' is the answer.....

glitterfairy · 01/06/2007 09:27

Have done no running this week and my 10k is a week on Sunday so am going to devote myself to getting back in the swing of it all.

|I just didnt feel like it which is pants really as I was doing so well.

GreebosWhiskers · 01/06/2007 10:17

So proud of dh - he did his first race in 9 years on Saturday (Dunfermline 5k) & came in 6th out of about 80 runners - 2 places ahead of one of his old running cronies. He'd only been back doing serious training for 5 weeks too. His time was 19:11 which he's not too happy about as he says it's been so long that he wasn't sure how to pace himself. He runs 6 mornings a week & gets up at 6 as he has to be ready to leave for work at 8:15.

I did the fun run with dd2 - it was supposed to be a mile but was really closer to a half. I got most of the way round, slowed to a walk (out of habit) then thought 'What am I walking for? I'm not out of breath' and started running again Am annoyed now that I walked for those few paces tho'. Will be doing the mile fun run at Donkey Brae in July which is supposed to be over quite rough terrain. Was hoping to run tonight but am coming down with a chest cold & it hurts to breathe so will leave it a few days & hope I'm not totally back to square one when I get back. Dh is taking me to Run & Become in Edinburgh tomorrow for new running shoes so that should cheer me up.

Heathcliffscathy · 01/06/2007 10:22

i need some advice please. I ran the longest I've ever done (8km, so not that far!) a few weeks ago. afterwards the tendon at the back of my left ankle hurt. I rested it for a week, tried running again last saturday. could run on it, but really felt it twinging afterwards.

so left it again until yesterday. again, tried running, but after 4 or so km, could really feel it.

HOW LONG DO I HAVE TO LEAVE IT BEFORE I GOES AWAY? or should i try to 'run through it'?

I'm so frustrated as my fitness level was really going up and i was really enjoying running....grrrrrrrrrrrrr.

themoon66 · 01/06/2007 10:28

I've had so many injuries like that Soph. I have learnt the hard way that you need at least 3 weeks rest. If you start running again too soon, you will only end up with the injury that lingers on for bloody ages.

Have you tried ice pack for 10 mins twice a day?

glitterfairy · 01/06/2007 10:37

I have been told that if the injury is muscular then it should have heat applied ot it and if it is bone then it should have cold applied.

If it is a tendon I would apply heat and use some of those heat pads you can buy.

StripeyKnickersSpottySocks · 01/06/2007 12:00

Never run through when there is pain. Don't know how long it'll take to heal though sorry.

I ran 20mins without stopping for the first tme ever today, the nwalked a minute then ran another 9.

Heathcliffscathy · 01/06/2007 19:07

3 weeks?????

i'll be a non-runner by then!!!

i guess i have learned that running on it is not a good idea...it is just hard to know when it is ok to run on it again, and easy to underestimate.

themoon66 · 01/06/2007 23:09

3 weeks is nothing much in the scale of things. When you start again just do 10 mins and no heroics like hills.

Do 5 lots of 10 min run, then increase to 15 mins. Do five lots of 15 mins, then increase to 20 mins.

this was the advice of my physio after 3 calf muscle tears. It has worked. I completed an hour's run last week. When I've done 5 of them, I will try an hour and 5 mins.

Heathcliffscathy · 02/06/2007 10:51

when you say five lots do you mean on different days?

like starting again isn't it?

i will follow instructions.

hana · 02/06/2007 10:53

i like running in the rain too
managed 2 morning runs this week so feel pretty good, but was hot this morning, and that was at 8!!

mustrunmore · 03/06/2007 08:13

My ankle thing took about 2 weeks to sort itself out, but I still dont know exactly what it was or what caused it. Its fine now though.
Been a nightmare trying to run with MIL here, as she sees it as me skiving But I did manage to get my 5km time down bit more, to 29 min 49s. Thats very good for the new post-kids me
Am now concentrating on hill stuff, and longer distances.
RFL next weekend, and I'm in no fit shape to do it

themoon66 · 03/06/2007 17:24

Soph... yes.... on different days. Example:

Sunday 10 mins.
Monday 10 mins.
Tues Rest Day
Wed 10 mins
Thurs 10 mins
Fri Rest Day
Sat 10 mins
Sun 15 mins
Monday Rest Day
Tues 15 mins
Wed 15 mins.

See... doing this i've been injury free since the beginning of March and did my first session of 70 mins this very morning

glitterfairy · 03/06/2007 20:16

Sorted myself out and did my 7 mile run this morning. Have also bought myself the runners world book for beginners which is really helpful.

Am doing a 10k next weekend and have no idea what the course is like but I live in the hills so think I should be ok.

I am suffering from runners tummy though and had to stop in a field today! Does anyone have any ideas on how to make this better as I am a little worried about my 10k and having to stop to go to the loo when there is none around.

lapsedrunner · 03/06/2007 20:21

themoon66 - Congrats on your restraint & sensible approach. I have just paid for ignoring an injury . Began to notice a niggling foot injury last Sat so rested it all week....in order to run a womens 10K today ...the result is a very sore foot which probably requires 1-2 weeks rest. That being said I was determined to do the run and finished in 56mins.
