devious - I'm not on MSN myself - so not sure how to get in touch!

Still not sure if my foot will take any running but am determined to give it a little go this weekend.

SachaF · 24/05/2007 13:28

Wonderful run last night. 10km race - 2.5km flat, turn a corner and 2.5km uphill, run round top of hill and reverse route! Struggled with walking much today! but did a 2mile walk on the way back from singing group and it's helped stretch the legs out.
Felt very strange leaving ds with my mum for the evening for our own pleasure (), especially as there were other babies (a bit older) at the race! Previously we've always taken ds and his pram along to races. But it worked well, and have another 10km race in 2 weeks time (flat though!!!)

popsycal · 25/05/2007 20:02

trieed to run las night but immediately knew my knees werent p to it so came home.....

what do you all suggest,,,,
kneesf fine today but tempted to leave it until sunday

Lilliput · 25/05/2007 21:23

Popsycal- Why do you do it to yourself? I don't want to sound harsh but maybe all the aches and pains is just your body saying please don't make me run, let's do something low impact instead. I'm a bit worried you are going to do yourself some damage because of your dogged determination to get out there and run.

hana · 25/05/2007 21:26

am bummed out
dh hasn't gotten home any night this week early enough for me to go out for a run, by the time he does get home ( still not home yet) I'm just too knackered.....
really need a run, does anyone run in the am before the world is awake, I'm taking 630/7ish? I might have to start that instead before he goes to work.

2boysmacca · 25/05/2007 21:28

Me! I find it better than any other time, get up, go, come back and have breakfast, Sets you up for the whole day

hana · 25/05/2007 21:32

yeah, I think that's my future. will have to go to bed earlier, I tend to be a bit of a nightowl tho

Lilliput · 25/05/2007 21:35

I go in the morning while dh gives the kids breakfast. Breakfast is always a bit of a trial what with dd talking nonstop and ds demanding more rice crispies then more toast it is rather nice to walk out the front door and literally run away from it all for half an hour.

hana · 25/05/2007 21:37

but dh leaves at about 720, and I like to have the kids all dresssed and downstairs by that time ( we leave house at 820ish)
ah well, have to maybe go closer to 630 than 7
shit

2boysmacca · 25/05/2007 21:37

Mine are up at 5/5.30ish so 9.30 is usually lights out for me! Makes gym/run hard though as gyms aren't open that early here and I have to convince dh that he has to get up at that time too, so weekends only here for runs and late mornings for the gym.

hana · 25/05/2007 21:39

i so like the feeling after a run tho
so do my legs, hahaha

mustrunmore · 26/05/2007 07:50

Dh leaves at 5.40am, so I'd have to run about 4.30am to get it done and have a wash and still be ready for the boys waking at 5.30

Really peed off as I only did 5km yesterday, and it was 30 mins (was running slower as I'd intended a long run, but just inexplicably stopped)

So, my main questions to put to you all at the moment are:

  1. Tips for keeping going on a treadmill (ie you dont actually have to run back to anywhere!)
  2. Since the ankle thing, I've been finding myself holding on to the treadmill at bit, and I think its more from habit now, but I cant seem to stop, I just suddenly realise I'm doing it. And I dont know why, as its easier to run properly! 3.Any great ideas for ab exercises that dont hurt my back? ALL have, even when I was fit! I'm doing back strengthening things to try and help.
2boysmacca · 26/05/2007 08:10

Does it not help if using the Swiss ball for abs?

mustrunmore · 26/05/2007 08:48

Nope But I am doing some back extensions on there; only those and hamstring curls really. I just really dont know what to do for abs. Even when I had some muscles, I couldnt isolate them, and my back always ended up hurting, over lots of different machines/exercises. Am I just a mutant or something?!

3sEnough · 26/05/2007 08:53

Hi - couldn't read all of the thread asI'm supposed to be packing to go away(!) but, I do pilates and was told in no uncertain terms by my physio that if I wanted to keep on running, I HAD to do something for core stability and flexibility - pilates or Alexander technique. It's great, I've carried on through 2 of the 3 pregnancies and I've hardly had any back pain (following a slipped disc 6 months after the birth of 1st child) it's so good that my dh has now joined me and does it too - since starting he hasn't had any early morning aches and pains and it holding himself much better.

saggers · 26/05/2007 09:05

I'm looking for a bit of advice. I've started running again after a bit of a break. Have never really gone far - probably only about 5 miles - and at the moment am only doing about 3 miles, 3 or 4 times a week. Have Nike Air trainers, but they're a bit past it. My hip hurts sometimes and think they may be to blame? Can anyone recommend a decent pair for the sort of running I'm doing? (Usually on hard surfaces, not grass)

Saggarmakersbottomknocker · 26/05/2007 09:40

Hello saggers - obviously you are not me lol.

I have occasional hip problems - usually if I'm running upwards of 10k (I know my limits ). It sounds like new shoes may be on the cards. I wear Asics but if you find that Nike fit you well then go with them as long as they have decent support and impact protection. Also vary your running route/surface if you can - I used to run the same way around a lake on a regular basis and the camber of the path mean't one leg was getting more of a workout than the other.

popsycal · 26/05/2007 09:58

popsycal · 26/05/2007 10:00

lilliput just seen your post
If my knees hurt I stop within minutes and come home.....

and at the moment I am waiting to have a few more pain free days before i go back out again

Lilliput · 26/05/2007 12:12

I'm pretty chuffed with myself, ran 5K without stopping, although it was very slow. I've got a week now until race for life, how do I train this week, do I take it easy?

saggers · 26/05/2007 20:38

saggarmakersbottomknocker (lol, certainly a similarity there!) and popsycal - thanks for your advice. Much appreciated. I run round the outside of a park (in the same direction each time) so may try to go the other way. I only tried it once and didn't like it, but there's sense in what you suggested, so may give it another go!
I'm heavier now than I used to be (although on my way back down again, thankfully) so think that may be putting extra strain on my hips. Will try new shoes and a change of direction and see how I get on.

popsycal · 27/05/2007 15:56

just done my first ;proper' run all week

my training plan (lol if you can call it that) made me go back to 1 min walk 2 min run over a 33 min period (previously had lenghtened running intervals). decided to find a 3 mile route and see how far i could get round in that time and I had to run further!!!

got round 3 miles in 31:20
was realy impressed
1:65 miles in 16:38

feel gooooood for a novice!!

DeviousDaffodil · 27/05/2007 16:00

Well done, it is chucking it down here so am unable to run today - feel really frutrated. Am entering a10k race on 24/06 so need to get prepared!

popsycal · 27/05/2007 16:30

windy and overcast here but the rain has dried up....

I made a point today of not 'jogging'; i remembered reading that your feet should 'creep' across the road and my knees feel brilliant.
