Anyone else have this awful virus?

Day 3 and I'm fucked! I have never experienced a sore throat like this. It's agony.

Dr prescribed naproxen and co-codimol. Can't take the naproxen yet as it's bid and I have already taken ibruprofen.

Not slept at all for 48 hours as my throat is too painful. Had to write a note for the Dr as I couldn't talk to explain symptoms.

He said there is a particular nasty virus that is poleaxing people for up to two weeks . I can't afford to take that time off work.

What I'm really after is self help for my throat - it is AGONY and I am besides myself. If I cough it feels like layers of skin being ripped from my throat. Strangely I don't think my tonsils are affected as it's more central roof of mouth.

The most impressive nasal drop you've ever seen.

He didn't say the f word though - just rest and fluids. Pain relief etc.

Anyone want to join my pity party?

I am on day six. Started off with bad headache and quickly morphed into throat that felt like it was being ripped to pieces if I so much as swallowed. Have had headache pretty much the entire time, fever on and off, entire body aches. Last couple of days felt quite sick and dizzy as well.

Have been off work since Friday, which isn't great as I only returned from maternity leave six weeks ago! Going to try and go to work tomorrow but I feel like utter shit but the rest of my team are the type who will "soldier on" no matter what which is usually why germs spread so fast at work because they come to work sick and spread it.....Angry

I think this past week I am finally better. Since 9 th Dec! At last stopped being croaky and sneezy in the mornings.

My secret ( not any more) cold remedy recipe;
2 shots spiced Rum
Juice of a large orange (about the same amount as the rum and use OJ if you haven’t got an orange) and grate or thinly peel a bit of the rind.
Heat in a microwave mug or a pan with a big tablespoon of dark brown sugar until dissolved (don’t boil). Top up with about another third boiling water from kettle.
Stir in a teaspoon of unsalted butter ( with a cinnamon stick if you want the full effect)

I would not have got through the past few weeks without this little life saver.

Minestheoneinthegreen · 01/02/2018 02:47

I'm struggling to get anything into me so am v impressed with cocktails!
I've been in bed for what feels like ever. I only get about 2 hours sleep at a time as my coughing is terrible and as my throat and nose are so swollen I'm waking up gasping for air which scares me a bit. I think I'd feel better if even one thing fucked off. Headache would be a great start. But I must be on the mend as I am starting to think I may fancy something to eat.

PoppiesAreYellow · 01/02/2018 04:57

Checking in. Day 2 of flu like virus. Feel so so shitty. Not had a wink of sleep despite taking both paracetamol and ibuprofen.

I work from home and have a couple of very important things to do tomorrow and Friday but I can't even walk to the loo

PrincessoftheSea · 01/02/2018 05:56

Does everyone else also have this horrible stubborn phlegm? I am feeling generally much better, but still struggle to shift the phlegm and it makes me feel sick and umable to sleep at nightSad

whyhastherumgone · 01/02/2018 11:09

God I thought i was on the mend as I actually got some sleep after gargling TCP and taking night nurse but i woke up having sweat buckets with a throats like razor blades and a banging headache.
I now seem to have muscle aches all over and can't move from my chair or I get dizzy and feel like I'm going to collapse. It's been a week - but I see some of you have had it for over a month Shock wishing you all better

Lisette40 · 01/02/2018 11:18

I have something like this but only on day 3 now. I can't imagine having it for weeks. I've the throat, the sweating and the aches. Can't sleep either.

springydaffs · 01/02/2018 12:40

EUnamechange · 01/02/2018 13:14

Just over 3 weeks now and I'm still coughing up some green gunk, still have a sore throat and croaky voice, and still have a low fever. Am feeling a lot more human though and able to think. My brain's been on strike for 3 weeks.

littlebillie · 01/02/2018 13:33

LEM you made me laugh, I am Day 5 and watch Contagion to cheer my self up

PrincessoftheSea · 01/02/2018 14:02

Does anyone know what helps against this horrible phlegm? 😫

OutToGetYou · 01/02/2018 14:05

Have you got basic menthol crystals? Most chemist's sell them them, about £1.50.

Put a few in boiling water in a bowl and have them near you as you sit, don't try and steam your face over them, they are too strong. Just keep a bowl near you all the time.
Buy a couple of tubs.
A basic decongestant tablet might help too. And a hot shower if you can face it.

Try not to swallow the phlegm you bring up, try and spit it out.

Ironfloor · 01/02/2018 15:23

Can I join this thread? DD got this nasty virus last Sunday and then DH and I got it from her on Tuesday. DD is ok apart from a recurring temperature but the rest of us are much worse off - bodyache, chills, gone off food and the razor blade throat.

Can I ask, if it’s a virus, why do GPS prescribe antibiotics? Should I go see my GP then? I’ve only been taking paracetamol since I got this.

Lisette40 · 01/02/2018 15:50

ironfloor it may be that some people develop a secondary infection and need antibiotics.

TheVanguardSix · 01/02/2018 15:53

It's been a month. I'm over it as if this week except I still have that phlegm! I look horrendous! I have new wrinkles and look about 10+ years older.
It is exhausting!

Lisette40 · 01/02/2018 15:58

How did you keep going vanguard? I'd have fallen behind with everything.

AndromedaPerseus · 01/02/2018 16:11

Ironfloor a viral infection can overwhelm the body's immmune system allowing a secondary bacterial infection such as pneumonia or meningitis to take hold. Then the bacterial infection needs antibiotic treatment. If breathing becomes problematic then see GP as it may be pneumonia

MaggieMay23 · 01/02/2018 16:26

This bug is a right devil isn't it? Sympathy to everyone suffering. 💐💐 I'm 4 weeks in and can't shift it yet. I've got swollen glands and sinus pain as well as the hacking cough and my eyes feeling like they've been bashed in a fight with Mike Tyson (or whoever) I went to the chemist this morning to see if he could help me - he suggested taking ibuprofen and paracetamol, cough lozenges and regular steam inhalation's - all of which I'm doing - so. It's keep on keeping on ..... We've been planning to visit in laws this weekend and have decided to cancel as still don't feel well enough to be sociable - or to sleep in another bed

OutToGetYou · 01/02/2018 16:50

My GP gave anti biotics as I've had a cough since June which she felt might have been a bacterial infection. She could hear rattling on my chest. I went back as they didn't work. She said the rattle had got worse and sent me for an xray, and gave different anti biotics, saying she thought it was pneumonia.
But that diagnosis was very much predicated on the 9m cough and the chest noise, not just flu symptoms (which I started having about ten days ago).

SparklingXmas · 01/02/2018 19:25

I’m ill too- its horrid, day 3 and feel like death! the girls are getting concerned that mummy is 🤒 the last time I was this ill was 2001!
Hugs to you all
xx

EUnamechange · 01/02/2018 19:49

FFS, went 24hrs without a fever so thought I was on the home straight. Went out for a walk, had to run into shopping centre with stomach upset and nausea. Fever back. Also coughing up green gunk all morning.

GP is going to test a specimen of my mucus on Monday if I'm still ill, but I'm fairly sure I'll be fit for working from home by then, and then I'm off on holiday at half term (now dreading that).

Lisette40 · 01/02/2018 19:49

I wonder if it's an adenovirus causing this. You get cold symptoms, fever, sore eyes and sometimes stomach problems
