Anyone else have this awful virus?

Day 3 and I'm fucked! I have never experienced a sore throat like this. It's agony.

Dr prescribed naproxen and co-codimol. Can't take the naproxen yet as it's bid and I have already taken ibruprofen.

Not slept at all for 48 hours as my throat is too painful. Had to write a note for the Dr as I couldn't talk to explain symptoms.

He said there is a particular nasty virus that is poleaxing people for up to two weeks . I can't afford to take that time off work.

What I'm really after is self help for my throat - it is AGONY and I am besides myself. If I cough it feels like layers of skin being ripped from my throat. Strangely I don't think my tonsils are affected as it's more central roof of mouth.

The most impressive nasal drop you've ever seen.

He didn't say the f word though - just rest and fluids. Pain relief etc.

Anyone want to join my pity party?

I'm about 2 weeks into this. Started with a huge gland on one side of my throat, was so painful to touch, and the associated sore throat. Continued on for about 4 days with a temperature, the throat/gland and temp have subsided but I am left with a hacking cough and rattly chest (coughing up crap but it isn't green so haven't bothered going to the GP) but it is the utter exhaustion I am really struggling with, it is relentless - I feel like I've been hit by a tank - can hardly keep my eyes open!

Thing is, it was my 40th on Tuesday and my lovely DH has organised a huge (and costly) party for me this coming Saturday to which we have about 80 people coming. I need a miracle to kick this before then!

Ironfloor · 01/02/2018 19:57

Ah ok. I just thought I might be missing a trick there with the antibiotics.

At the moment, all three of us are suffering at death’s door. I’m never the type to nap in the daytime but so far today, I’ve had three ‘naps’. AND I’m planning an early night.

My throat is the worst, it’s really, really painful and stingy. My tummy growls with hunger but I can’t get any past the throat.

Pollaidh · 01/02/2018 20:33

Lisette my GP thought it was flu. Our areas's been badly hit. I did have the jab. I didn't get a runny nose or even much of a cough.

Lisette40 · 01/02/2018 20:39

Thanks pollaidh I had the three strain jab. I don't think I'm as bad as some people on the thread but I suppose only time will tell!

springydaffs · 02/02/2018 00:37

Pluckedpencil · 02/02/2018 04:13

Here in my town in Italy it is everyone. Two weeks long. I have it now. Awful sore throat, flu feeling body. And I had to sing the wheels on the bus for two hours straight teaching four year olds yesterday so I now have literally no voice at all. Aghhh.

Pluckedpencil · 02/02/2018 04:14

P.s. gargle with salt water. It really helps the throat pain better than difflam but God you do want to vomit with it.

WTFIsThisVirus · 02/02/2018 04:19

I'd get easy food in for dinner and let them watch dvds. Do no housework. Dose up on meds to feel human. Wipe down door handles, wash hands a lot to prevent the spread of the virus.

I hope she gets better soon, LEM .
So glad to find this thread.
I'm on day 13, and am only just starting to feel a little brighter, thanks to antibiotics prescribed to deal with secondary infection yesterday. DP, despite starting to look decidedly not amused, has held the fort and basically let me sleep night and day for a fortnight.
It has been so debilitating. I've lost half a stone and have no real sense of time having passed, just lying down trying not to move my head for fear of it exploding. Also have had the Radio 4 dramas about antibiotic resistance drifting in and out of my consciousness, really freaking me out.
The thing now is going to be not to pick anything else up while vulnerable, or overdoing it too soon. Wishing everyone a gentle recovery.

littlebillie · 02/02/2018 21:23

I just got antibiotics for my post flu chest infection. The Dr and I discussed the radio 4 drama too she agrees we have a few years of antibiotics according to Government guidance, but no more for throat infections unless an abscess is present.

I'm still rancid but in a new way it changes every day.

Woolfrai · 02/02/2018 22:22

I've been prescribed antibiotics due to a secondary infection. Starting taking them on Wednesday. I've now coughed up some blood, which is not great - DH is asking me to call the NHS direct but I'm sure it's just part of the chest infection. I hate seeing him worry.

Ollivander84 · 03/02/2018 00:15

I hope I don't have this Sad
GP diagnosed tonsillitis today but now I've started with snot and every time I breathe it tickles my throat and makes me cough. Throat is v sore and covered in gunk. Crossed fingers it is just a cold and tonsillitis together!

springydaffs · 03/02/2018 00:39

My gp insists on sending me for an xray bcs I have been coughing for over a month.

I know full well it's bcs of the Vile Virus. I am a recent cancer survivor and gp's panic when anything untoward is going on, sending me for this or that test. Good practise but I could do without it, frankly: very heavy on the nerves.

Plus I haven't been coughing for a straight month: I had the VV which went away BUT CAME BACK AGAIN the bastard.

springydaffs · 03/02/2018 00:41

Gargle with salt water ollivander

You poor thing (((hug)))

breadwidow · 03/02/2018 16:08

Joining the pity thread. Ive not been feeling right for 3 weeks now. Started with mildish cold like symptoms 3 weeks ago today. The next day was my sons birthday and i stayed home with my ill daughter instead of accompanying him on birthday treat. Thought I'd beaten it as the next day (Monday) I felt ok & went to work. Tuesday felt rough again but went in, though by lunchtime I was feeling dreadful and went home. Was off for the rest of the week and mainly in bed. Felt a lot better by last weekend and went back to work on Monday despite having a bit of a cough. This seems to have got worse and I feel like I have phlegm in my veins and like I'm operating at 60% capacity. I'm much better than when I was in bed all week but def not right and I'm getting frustrated that each day seems to be the same with no improvement, which is feeling just about well enough to go to work but not having energy for much else.

allthegoodnameshadgone · 04/02/2018 12:18

Day eight of this for me and I also have laryngitis and no voice whatsoever. This is my second day of no voice. Feeling very sorry for myself and just want to be better.
