Anyone else have this awful virus?

Day 3 and I'm fucked! I have never experienced a sore throat like this. It's agony.

Dr prescribed naproxen and co-codimol. Can't take the naproxen yet as it's bid and I have already taken ibruprofen.

Not slept at all for 48 hours as my throat is too painful. Had to write a note for the Dr as I couldn't talk to explain symptoms.

He said there is a particular nasty virus that is poleaxing people for up to two weeks . I can't afford to take that time off work.

What I'm really after is self help for my throat - it is AGONY and I am besides myself. If I cough it feels like layers of skin being ripped from my throat. Strangely I don't think my tonsils are affected as it's more central roof of mouth.

The most impressive nasal drop you've ever seen.

He didn't say the f word though - just rest and fluids. Pain relief etc.

Anyone want to join my pity party?

Day 7 and left with a chesty cough and absolute exhaustion with some light headedness. Can anyone suggest anything I can take for the cough please?

OutToGetYou · 27/01/2018 13:02

The only thing for coughs is pholcodeine linctus, sometimes just called codeine linctus.
Don't take any other codeine with it.

Mozartinmyfanjo · 27/01/2018 13:13

I don’t think l will ever feel better. Chest hurts still, a lot, feeling rubbish, no energy and l am in the middle of antibiotics treatment. I think it will be back to gp on Monday. Can’t see myself going to work next week. I have never been so ill in my life. What a bastard shit virus Angry
Flowers Brew for fellow sufferers. Get better soon

Greenandcabbagelooking · 27/01/2018 14:27

Day 4 for me.

Day 1 - 2, achy, high temp but not sweat, tired, no appetite
Day 3 - 4 less achy, cough, light headed, really tired, still no appetite

Hoping to get back to work on Monday, but the dizziness in any other position than lying down is the limiting factor. I'm a trainee teacher, so on my feet a lot. Plus I can't have much time off placement.

Will I be well enough by Day 6?

BulletFox · 27/01/2018 14:47

Oooh gosh - are you getting enough liquids/food/painkillers?

You should be able to muddle through if you have total rest this weekend and try to sleep most of it off.

It's a funny one this year though, people's seem to vary so much and you can't tell how long it will last, play it by ear :)

Brighteyes27 · 27/01/2018 14:51

Greenandcabbagelooking - if your anything like me no. I really wanted to go back to work last week but I was still coughing really hard and peeing myself. My appetite has come back now but i’m left with no energy, my breathing dreadful but I have asthma and I get very light headed and dizzy every time I move from the bed or couch to do anything. But I have also had a chest infection as well so had two lots of antibiotics. I am going for an X-ray next week. Here’s hoping I get back to work the middle of next week but I am still indoors and seriously resting.

NanTheWiser · 27/01/2018 15:12

I had the cold from hell 2 weeks ago. Seemed to be clearing up, then felt really awful yesterday. I rang 111 this morning as I was worried about pneumonia even though I've had the jab (I'm 71), and have an appt. at the OOH GP at the hospital at 4.40. Very much hoping they won't keep me in...

BaconAndAvocado · 27/01/2018 18:26

Day 4 for me and I couldn't rest, sleep, drink fluids, eat healthy things anymore than I am but it still seems to be getting worse every day.

Like Mozart said, I've never been this ill before in my life. (I'm 48).

Not due back to work till Thursday , just can't ever imagine feeling better at the moment.

Think Im a bit delirious ........ I may have said all of this already on this thread.

Oh dear Sad

desertmum · 27/01/2018 18:58

went into the pharmacy today and tearfully asked if they could recommend anything to make this tiredness go away and to make me feel better - she suggested a multi vitamin tonic and also the pholcodine linctus for my cough. I had a very large space around me as people looked aghast as I hacked and heaved in the shop. Pretty sure I'm not contagious but they looked at me as if I had the plague! I am never bloody ill and am now pretty p'ed off. There is a lot of napping going on.

MyGuideJools · 27/01/2018 20:41

well, I've been "better" for a week, but today feel shite again. My throat hurts, my glands are up. I've got a headache and temperature. Why does it have to come back?! Is once not enough??Angry

Brighteyes27 · 27/01/2018 22:08

MyGuideJools - oh no I am nowhere near 100% but I have felt the best I have felt for a month tonight and am hoping to get back to work the middle of next week but don’t want to be struck down again and end up even worse or off sick again.

MaggieMay23 · 27/01/2018 23:10

Myguide mine has come back too. My glands have been up all week and yesterday the chesty cough and runny nose and sneezing were back. I'm about 4 weeks in.

TheVanguardSix · 28/01/2018 11:32

I've lost track of how far in I am.
The bone drenching exhaustion is enough to make me cry.
I wake up every morning with a cracking headache, sore throat, blocked snot drain for a nose which then proceeds to empty itself when I get up. But it never clears.
My nausea has subsided but now I have pinching cramps low down in the abdomen and sore diaphragm area. It's the weirdest illness. Just when you think you've turned a corner, another mole pops up.

thegreylady · 28/01/2018 14:01

Dh got me some pholcodine linctus yesterday and I did have a good night last night. I just wish I could feel near normal. My lovely dd came round and changed the bed , she brought some lovely home made spaghetti sauce made with lots of veg and did a general freshen up of the house. She did more in an hour than I have managed in weeks!
I haven’t lit the candle because I wouldn’t be able to smell it atm.
Good luck everyone.

35goingon90 · 28/01/2018 14:15

The zombie virus seems to be returning. I had 2 weeks of awfulness, interspersed with the odd half day at work. Last week I went back and I didn't feel too bad, except for being up all night with a dodgy stomach one day.

This morning I've woken up with a headache, dizzy, heavy chest and coughing. Also extremely tired.

When will it end?!

EUnamechange · 28/01/2018 15:49

Day 19 and I still have a fever. Still have a sore throat and can only speak very very quietly. Every afternoon and evening my temp goes up more and my throat gets really sore and I have to suck ice.

Starting to feel more human. Walked about 1000 steps and wasn't dizzy, just had a little lean against the wall. Haven't needed to nap after walking.

EUnamechange · 28/01/2018 15:50

Splitting headache again yesterday though.

Misty9 · 28/01/2018 16:54

I’ll relctantly join. Day, um...12 here and finally feeling a bit more human so am apprehensive about it returning with a vengeance as just started feeling achey and ear ache this afternoon. I haven’t really moved from bed/sofa for days and the icing on the cake was one of my 48 hr migraines. My body hates me :(

Woolfrai · 28/01/2018 18:03

I feel shocking.

I had a virus just before Christmas which rendered me useless for about a week. The cough never went but all other symptoms completely improved, last week I started coming down with a headache. I feel dreadful. My face aches. My chest rattles and is quite sharp. I'm so tired, and slept for most of the morning but I have too much to do. Can't afford to take time off of work, especially considering I was off before Christmas, but I feel worse this time then before!

sportyfool · 28/01/2018 18:15

Cloroseptic ( sp) .. I just spray loads on a sore throat until it's numb .!

MycatsaPirate · 28/01/2018 18:21

Shuffles in in pjs and dressing gown.

DD2 started mid week, incredibly sore eyes and a hacking cough. Eyes so red and puffy she looked like she had been crying all night. Friday night I started feeling rough, woke up Saturday with a sore throat, hacking cough, and a head fill with congestion.

Still feeling awful and had to cry off a swimming comp I was supposed to help out at tonight. So guilt as well as feeling shit.

Thank God I don't work as I would then have guilt about not being in work but will have to cancel hospital appointment for Tuesday if I'm still like this, I doubt they would want me anywhere near the place.

DD1 (200 miles away at uni) also has the same virus.

BestIsWest · 28/01/2018 18:32

Day 15 and still quite grim. This has really taken it out of me. I might finally concede and go and see a doctor this week. Just visited the pharmacist and they were useless. Gave me potters cough pastilles.

Kingsclerelass · 28/01/2018 18:44

Started with an itchy throats on Friday afternoon and woke up yesterday in a sweaty haze. On my own so did food shop yesterday morning, nearly hit a lorry on the way home. Been flat on my back since.

I feel like I've been beaten with a pole. Everything hurts. DS (9) is doing his best and I'm trying to be cheerful for his sake but feel awful

How long before I'll be ok to drive?

EUnamechange · 29/01/2018 11:32

I feel worse again now. Coughing up crap again, chest feels tight, fever in the morning. Thought yesterday that I was finally coming to the end. Day 20
