Rhubarb and asparagus - 10 / 10 club sparkly Spring thread

All welcome - for anyone who wants a boost to their general health. The suggested goals are:

EAT 10 PORTIONS OF FRUIT AND VEGETABLES EVERY DAY - if you don't usually eat much fruit and veg I would build up gradually or you could upset your digestion.

DO (AT LEAST) 10 MINUTES OF EXERCISE EVERY DAY - can be yoga, stretching or something more energetic. The plan is that the idea of doing 10 minutes is not too daunting, and having started you may well find you want to do more.

There are no restrictions on what you eat, so long as you get your 10 fruit and veg as well. The focus is not on weight loss, but on improving our energy levels and hopefully our general mood and well-being. Sign up below and post here to tell us how you're getting on and how you are feeling.

Basic guidance on what constitutes a portion of fruit and veg here and you can download more detailed information here (follow the link at the very bottom of the page)

Greeny there was never going to be multiple threads, just more frequent consecutive ones

I keep nearly starting threads to talk about last night, but don't know where to begin ...

Cappuccino · 25/04/2007 20:20

I am at the end of cooking my risotto

I am sad to report that it tastes of naff all

it is 'subtle' according to the recipe

and I realise that I am not

sarz · 25/04/2007 21:36

Cappuccino, well done at resisting!! I just finish 2 1/2 hours of Karate and didnt let myself drive to chinese and came straight home! although i came home to find there is no food and so for my dinner i had a banana a plum and an apple! good for my 10 a day, bad for my balanced meals!! Luckily had very balanced lunch so its not to bad!!

NotQuiteCockney · 25/04/2007 21:38

Today has gotten a bit better. I got stuck on the sugar binge/crash thing, whoops.

But I have had:

  • muesli (1)
  • two big oranges (2)
  • a bit of smoothie (1)
  • enourmous amounts of salad (3 kinds of lettuce, cucumber, radish, and garlic, yum) (3)

For a total of 7. Oh, and I walked to DS1's school, so got an hour's brisk walking in, at least. Not bad given I am v tired, spent lots of today hungover, and had evil hot monkey boy for the whole day.

Overrun · 25/04/2007 21:45

Oh blimey, I did a huge post at about 7.30pm and then our financial advisor arrived, and has only just left , and I can't be bothered to type it again, as i have lost it
had more spring greens this time with wild garlic (sorry Franny) and spicy cauliflower (sorry every one)

TooTicky · 25/04/2007 22:23

I remember I once filled my pockets with wild garlic. It just smelled so divine. I was on a night walk with some Quakers.

TooTicky · 25/04/2007 22:25

Have eaten extravagantly and smugly well today and am just slightly miffed that nobody has congratulated me on my raw spring greens for breakfast. Have had way over 10 portions today (well, at least 12) and all different. And mostly raw.

FrannyandZooey · 25/04/2007 22:28

CONGRATULATIONS TooTicky

and please excuse me for snorting at this line:

I remember I once filled my pockets with wild garlic. It just smelled so divine. I was on a night walk with some Quakers.

which I found unexpectedly humorous

It does sound ... euphemistic ... but I can't see how ... Just generally, I guess.

FrannyandZooey · 25/04/2007 22:38

yes i can't put my finger on it either

It did smell a little peculiar the next day. And took ages to pick all the limp bits out of my pockets.

sibble · 26/04/2007 04:40

hi SARZ, not sure if it helps but there was a virus going around here a few weeks ago, I know another mumsnetter who had it, same symptoms and seemed to last forever. Her GP gaver her anti-nausea drugs and said it would pass, he'd seen alot of it. Not sure if it's what you've got or what your GP has prescribed. If it is the good thing is it does pass.

Am doing really well with the eating. Have had my 10 so far today and only mid afternoon. AM failing a bit on the exercise front though, DS2 not well today (actually he only has a cold but day care called for me to pick him up in case he was infectious) so bang went my trip to the gym this afternoon. Will try again this morning.

NOt sure who asked, scrolled down but you girls chat so much during the day can't find the post but circuit training is 'near death experience exercise' IMO. On Tuesday she had us rotating onto different pieces of equipment in groups for 3 mins at a time, no breaks just keep moving as she shouts at you, if you slack in her eyes, it;s down to the ground for x pressups. For my sins I had her as a PT earlier this year so she took no prisoners here. Steps, jogging in and out of and along a ladder on teh floor, boxing with her, miss her hand 20 press ups, onto spin bike. My face was red for hours. Not for the faint hearted, now why did I want to go back tomorrow .

Dinner tonight, fish, mussels and salad. Same as last night but it was nice, quick easy as boys have swimming (except DS2 who will scream for the whole session as he can't get in the pool with his cold)

FrannyandZooey · 26/04/2007 07:58

Hi Sibble, it was me - thanks very much. I am strangely not desperate to go and give it a try

Am eating pear, apple, plum, kiwi, raisins

ate huge chocolate thing at cafe yesterday and spent all evening feeling tetchy, tired and wanting to eat

am assuming a connection

OP posts:

i am going to getknitted though, that does cheer me up

but my MIL will mutter when she sees i have bought fancy yarns, oh no, sirdar 100% acrylic is good enough for the likes of us, aaaargh

and there is no chance of concealing this as she GOES THROUGH MY DRAWERS

(yes you read that right and YES I have tried it, whatever anyone is going to suggest. manslaughter, no, haven't tried that...)

NotQuiteCockney · 26/04/2007 08:18

She GOES THROUGH YOUR DRAWERS?

I get quite irritated that my MIL looks through any piles of anything she finds around, reading letters, etc etc.

I think I'd be leaving piles of porn and sex toys in some drawers, stragetically.

NotQuiteCockney · 26/04/2007 08:19

Oh, wait, you've tried that?

NotQuiteCockney · 26/04/2007 08:20

I think we're maybe heading for another shit day. No spots yet. DS2 was awake a few times in the night. I dunno, he seems to want to go to the o-op, so maybe I'll take him.

I've got to go buy a towel for DS1.

Cappuccino · 26/04/2007 08:41

Ticky I did see the greens for breakfast comment and let it pass, tbh

I was going to post something along the lines of 'Raw greens? For breakfast? Are you insane?' but realised that this was not the done thing on such a healthy thread

so somebody did notice

Today I am going to try a salad (this might seem basic to you lot but if it doesn't have bread in it, lunch doesn't seem right to me). I have peppers, broccoli, a red cabbage, and some salady leaves and a mushroom or two and tomatoes

tbh it sounds ghastly. I don't normally do raw. All that chewing for a start, and I have very few molars left after a well-meaning dental experiment in my youth went terribly wrong. However none of you seem to be spitting it out so it must not be poisonous.
