Rhubarb and asparagus - 10 / 10 club sparkly Spring thread

All welcome - for anyone who wants a boost to their general health. The suggested goals are:

EAT 10 PORTIONS OF FRUIT AND VEGETABLES EVERY DAY - if you don't usually eat much fruit and veg I would build up gradually or you could upset your digestion.

DO (AT LEAST) 10 MINUTES OF EXERCISE EVERY DAY - can be yoga, stretching or something more energetic. The plan is that the idea of doing 10 minutes is not too daunting, and having started you may well find you want to do more.

There are no restrictions on what you eat, so long as you get your 10 fruit and veg as well. The focus is not on weight loss, but on improving our energy levels and hopefully our general mood and well-being. Sign up below and post here to tell us how you're getting on and how you are feeling.

Basic guidance on what constitutes a portion of fruit and veg here and you can download more detailed information here (follow the link at the very bottom of the page)

Blimey, its not even 11am and so much has happened already
Cappuccino glad that the cauliflower didn't have any repercussions, I don't agree with NQC, its lovely stuff. I have really started loving it since I have found lots of good recipes, not just cauliflower cheese (nice as that is) Franny, its no windier than anything I else I reckon. Mind you if dh and I can eat the amount of Jeruselem artichokes that we did on Saturday with no ill effects, we must have super guts
So far today I have (also changed my outfit to a warmer one) taken ds1 to gps and got some antibiotics for him. Driven to the farm shop, but I forgot that it is closed on a monday
I couldn't face getting the dcs out of the car to go to local supermarket for some fruit, so am reduced to eating dried dates (which I don't even like very much)
Box comes tomorrow, so we will have to hang tight until then.
Sibble, what a fantastic variety of things. Psychobabble, please do join us
Anorak and Aviatrix, can you recommend any good books about GI, or at least refresh my memory on the basic ideas of it. Ta

filthymindedvixen · 23/04/2007 11:27

(fab new dress F&Z? Do tell. I have developed an unhealthy obsession in your clothes since that thread )

TT! I cannot tell you how impressed I am! Such a lineage!

2 hours down the alloty and I am now armed with many leeks which are destined for a soupy end!
So far I have had an apple and some orange juice but am too full of porridge to tackle anything else. I also have lots of rhubarb. Really, rhubarb bellinis are the way forwards Or rhubarb juic with vodka and fizzy elderflower cordial is gorgeous! Ooh, won't be too long before elderflowers season is upon us.

Tatties, safe journey and have fun,
Psychobabble, hello!
Aviatrix - how very exciting! my friend lived in Bermuds for many years - idyliic but expensive and full of golf bores...
NQC - you are going on a motorbike in a long dress>???? (make sure you are wearing good pants. Take it from one who knows...) At least you won't suffer from the dreaded helmet hair

Overrun I have the GI Diet book by Rick Gallop.

Just made lunch, a salad with spinach, watercress, tomato, avocado, olives and tuna with a little drizzle of olive oil.

Yummy!

Have also been eating raw button mushrooms like sweeties.

Yay for Psychobabble joining us, and good to see you back again anorak

FMF the dress has a thread of its own I am such an attention slut. Search for my name with Matalan and you should find it. Someone today said it looked like a Monsoon dress. And yes I know I shouldn't be shopping in Matalan

I have rhubarb, can someone give me a really sound recipe for rhubarb crumble please? Preferably healthy-ish version

The inlaws have gone, they were only meant to come round on Sat and Sun but announced yesterday their intention to drop round again today before they went home. So I said how busy I was and then of course had to go out all morning so we didn't get caught out

FrannyandZooey · 23/04/2007 13:03

Can someone give me the 101 on stewing the rhubarb? Or does it just cook in the oven with the crumble topping? (can you tell I am Not a Proper Mother?)

OP posts:
suzycreamcheese · 23/04/2007 13:25

cooks in oven well mine does

NotQuiteCockney · 23/04/2007 14:16

I always stew before, with a bit of sugar.

Actually, I used to just eat rhubarb raw, either with sugar or salt. We used to steal it from the neighbour's yard and just eat it.

Had felafel, spinach, tomato, etc. Lots of walking. DS2 quite ill, I am okish.

I am going on the bike in a long dress. Apparently the bike taxi people have fancy blankets to protect one's modesty? I am not sure about this bit, actually, as the skirt is long and tightish, I guess I could undo the back zip ... will have a trial run.

Overrun · 23/04/2007 15:29

Suzy, I was shocked on the one time I shopped in Matalan (my excuse was I was waiting for a nearby soft play to open), and they demanded I get a card. Whats all that about?
Aviatrix - God touch wood, I have not had one for over a month. I haven't changed anything, although I am really consciously trying to not get stressed, couting to 10, deep breathing etc. My neck is playing up so I am worried that that will spark one off. Perhaps my body has just been too busy having an upset stomach to have one grrr Any yours? Is cutting out caffeine helping? I will try and google GI, and Anorak thanks for the tip about the book, I will have a look at that on Amazon
I have now added a lovely conference pear to my total. I can't resist shopping I went into Marks. I was at the check out, when my ds1 (4) suddenly announced he was doing a pooh, and I turned round and he had his trousers and pants round his ankles, GAWD
I said "pull them up and pull it in" and we departed on the double. God, this means that his tummy problems haven't stopped (sad)

Overrun · 23/04/2007 15:30

sorry "Any yours" doesn't make sense, "what about yours" would make better sense

Overrun · 23/04/2007 15:34

Oh blimey, forgot about the Rhubarb. I guess I would suggest stewing it with a little bit of golden caster sugar or honey and I would use orange juice and maybe zest rather than lemon. Cut it into even chunks, and try it for 20 mintutes at 200, if you are then doing a crumble, it should be alright to put the topping on the top and do that for another 25 35 minutes. If just stewing, then prick it and see, it should retain some firmness, keep their shape but the fork tines should go in easily. I guess it is a matter of taste. I guess if you are roasting, you would use less juice and probably have to use some butter

FrannyandZooey · 23/04/2007 16:01

just back from bike ride pulling the trailer behind. I was very lazy and slow but I still feel like I have accomplished something
