For anyone who wants a boost to their general health. The suggested goals are:

EAT 10 PORTIONS OF FRUIT AND VEGETABLES EVERY DAY - if you don't usually eat much fruit and veg I would build up gradually or you could upset your digestion.

DO (AT LEAST) 10 MINUTES OF EXERCISE EVERY DAY - can be yoga, stretching or something more energetic. The plan is that the idea of doing 10 minutes is not too daunting, and having started you may well find you want to do more.

There are no restrictions on what you eat so long as you get your 10 fruit and veg as well. The focus is not on weight loss but on improving our energy levels and hopefully our general mood and well-being. Sign up below and post here to tell us how you're getting on and how you are feeling.

Basic guidance on what constitutes a portion of fruit and veg here and more detailed information here

I even did links this week

Right, I'm looking forward to seeing all the old faithfuls and maybe some new faces on here this week. We are not a clique, any old fool can join

Hope you are all feeling the good results of your efforts last week and are motivated for the coming week.

I am still excelling on the fruit and flunking on the exercise, another virtual kick up the arse needed please...

Me too Franny re. lots of fruit but not enough exercise. I am shockingly lazy atm - my house is a shithole but it's Modnay, a new week, better intentions etc etc

I'm going to have to start hauling my arse around a bit more now though - I signed up for the Race for Life last week and I'll be (sort of) running with slim fit people from work. I will never be able to keep up with some of them but I'm determined not to make a total tit of myself.

FrannyandZooey · 26/02/2007 12:16

Afternoon Cheesy, quiet round here isn't it?

I am very impressed about the race for life - what distance is it?

Tatties · 26/02/2007 13:50

Oh Franny, you make me want to sing

CheesyFeet · 26/02/2007 13:50

There were onions in my salad Franny, reckon I've breathed a bit to hard on them all...

RfL is 5Km (about 3 miles I think)

I did it last year but walked all the way round, this year I'm hoping to run at least half of it (short bursts though)

SauerKraut · 26/02/2007 13:58

(sticks nose round door in a cautious manner-) Hello! Last time I peeked in here it was no place for an emetophobe, and I had to beat a hasty retreat. Looks better today. Motivation needed- today I have had ovaltine, 6 custard creams and I am just about to have crisps. Oh dear.

SauerKraut · 26/02/2007 14:00

Does anyone know anything about IBS and the best kind of fruit and veg for it? Sometimes I don't dare eat any for fear of setting it off.

tortoise · 26/02/2007 14:13

So far today ive had
Banana, Apple and spring onions.
Need to buy some fruit and veg tomorrow. Only got apples and bananas left! And frozen mixed veg. I like munching on raw carrots in the evening.
Going to make raisin and nut flapjacks later. I don't like raisins on there own but they are ok in flapjacks!

Exercise wise done a roughly 2 mile walk for milk and bread!

Thanks for links. Will print info out nd have a good look at it.

Overrun · 26/02/2007 16:23

Hi all, welcome Sauerkraut, I suffer from IBS (regular posters will be sighing and saying what does she not suffer from).
It took my body a while to get used to the extra fibre, but now I do feel better for it. I lose track about what they say sets IBS off, I think it is probably a personal thing. Sorry you were put off before, it only occasionally deginerates into vomit inducing anecdotes
So far I have had, a banana, orange juice, my pasta sauce was made up of onions and tomotoes (with tuna and Anchovvys) and I am having butter fried parsnips for
dinner alongside some green veg, yet to be decided

Greensleeves · 26/02/2007 16:26

Lovely thread title this week

So far today I have had two apples, a banana, a glass of orange juice, a large bowl of soup (carrot, onion, pearl barley, white cabbage and leek). I am currently consuming a small bag of yoghurt covered raisins. Dinner this evening will be kale, cauliflower and potato curry with mixed brown/wild/red rice, followed by a clementine.

FrannyandZooey · 26/02/2007 16:26

Cheesy, great stuff, I am sure you can work up to trotting that far - when is it?

SauerKraut, I am sorry, I did tell them...

I'm afraid I don't know much about IBS but I think some other 10 / 10 ers suffer too, so I hope they will be able to help.

Tortoise you are keeping up the good work

Tatties, my only weakness is...well never mind, never mind

Oops posting too slow here

Greeny, very good indeed, but that is you on an official warning for being Non Emetophobe Friendly, ok?

and Overrun, a class act as ever

FrannyandZooey · 26/02/2007 16:30

Aw Greeny, don't sulk

you really have been a Prize Swot today and done much much better than me

OP posts:
Greensleeves · 26/02/2007 16:31

Yes, I am marvellous aren't I

CheesyFeet · 26/02/2007 16:39

afaik if you cook veg properly then it is less likely to trigger IBS so salad should be out... BUT... I have IBS and eating loads of fibre, inc lots of f&v both cooked and uncooked has really helped clear my symptoms. Had a chinese takeaway a couple of weeks ago after a month of healthy eating and it played havoc with my innards (won't go into tmi territory). I essentially follow a low GI, low fat diet that together with the 10 / 10 goodness on this thread has really helped. No serious cramping (other than the takeaway) for ages

RfL is end of June so I have plenty of time. I go to aerobics once a week atm so I'm planning to start running/walking intervals this week too.

Today I've had a banana, an apple, a couple of plums, a handful of grapes and a mahoosive salad for lunch. Dinner tonight will be beef bourguignon with loads of steamed veg.

DH works for a veg grower so I have no excuse for not eating plenty of veg. We have been known to leave it to rot in the bottom of the fridge though

CheesyFeet · 26/02/2007 16:40

There appears to be a nasty Green niff in the air

pwwwaaahhhhhh as dd would say

tortoise · 26/02/2007 17:37

Greeny That curry sounds nice. Ive never made a curry.
Lots of mixed veg with tea.
I was surprised it was only 1 tbsp of raisins for 1 portion. Done that easily with a piece of flapjack.

Tatties · 26/02/2007 18:56

Oh ^ Franny^

I am quite pleased with myself today. I've had an orange, an apple, prune juice , sweetcorn in pasta salad at lunch, and mushroom, leek and cabbage stir-fry with dinner. Need more this evening to make it to 10.

No exercise though, and didn't make it to Pilates. Maybe next week, eh?

FrannyandZooey · 26/02/2007 18:56

Tortoise yes some of the portions are smug-makingly small aren't they?

Cheesy it all sounds excellent you can give yourself a prefect's badge too

will return with gloating details of my intake shortly (am being summoned upstairs to "Be a Nice Giant" )

Overrun · 26/02/2007 19:27

I'm shattered today, and don't feel that I have been living the 10/10 dream very well
Too many sweet treats, and too much butter on my veg.
Will cut my grapefruit ready for tomorrows breakfast this evening, otherwise I will never eat it

FrannyandZooey · 26/02/2007 20:19

Aw Overrun

you can have butter, and chocolate and stuff, this is not about deprivation, it's about having LOTS of the good stuff

sorry you are feeling tired, and you sound low

OP posts:
FrannyandZooey · 26/02/2007 20:21

FrannyandZooey · 26/02/2007 20:33

Oh I am having a conversation with myself on here but still haven't clocked on my 10 today

with breakfast: pear, apple, soya milk, raisins, grapes, tangerine

with lunch: beetroot, carrot, red pepper, cucumber (probably only 1 or 2 portions in total though)

with dinner: asparagus, sweetcorn, broccoli

snacks: tangerines (2), apple, pear, plum

I am feeling on a roll with the f + v eating, it is bankrupting us

OP posts:
tortoise · 26/02/2007 20:36

Thats an impressive list F&Z.
Ive just had another banana.
i have been looking into veg boxes. Looks quite good but i have to be sure i can afford the £9.50 a week. Not sure i can. I buy f & v as and when i can afford it but have no variety.
