For anyone who wants a boost to their general health. The suggested goals are:

EAT 10 PORTIONS OF FRUIT AND VEGETABLES EVERY DAY - if you don't usually eat much fruit and veg I would build up gradually or you could upset your digestion.

DO (AT LEAST) 10 MINUTES OF EXERCISE EVERY DAY - can be yoga, stretching or something more energetic. The plan is that the idea of doing 10 minutes is not too daunting, and having started you may well find you want to do more.

There are no restrictions on what you eat so long as you get your 10 fruit and veg as well. The focus is not on weight loss but on improving our energy levels and hopefully our general mood and well-being. Sign up below and post here to tell us how you're getting on and how you are feeling.

Basic guidance on what constitutes a portion of fruit and veg here and more detailed information here

Lunch - a bowl of raw oats with raisins, linseeds, sesame seeds, poppy seeds, walnut pieces, and orange juice on it. And a pint of water.

Have tangerine and possibly a fruit bar lined up for afternoon snacks.

Greeves · 28/02/2007 13:49

do seeds count?

Overrun · 28/02/2007 15:48

Hi, Greeves, I can't remember about whether seeds count. Sorry. I am sure they are good for you no matter what.
Tortoise - have you tried making home made chicken nuggets, or fish cakes. Both really easy if you fancy giving them a go.
Cheesy omelettes are quick and easy. Mine like sos mix sausages for some reason.
Here is a recipe that includes potatoes not chips, and veg and cheese:

Bake however many baked pototoes as you need. Meanwhile saute, onion, leek, bacon lardons. Then add grated cheese and maybe a beaten egg/cream if you don't mind the fat. Then cut potaotes in half and scoop out flesh and mix up with cheesy mixture, and put back in the oven for 5 minutes to melt. Serve with salad maybe, or peas or whatever.

tortoise · 28/02/2007 16:49

No i haven't tried H/M nuggets or fish cakes.
Whats sos mix sausages?
That backed pot recipe sonuds yummy. Going to try that one.
Thanks.

Greeves! I don't know about seeds either but they are meant to be good for you.

Overrun · 28/02/2007 17:08

Sos mix is a type of veggie sausage mix that most supermarkets sell, and health shops. It is much nicer than some veggies mixes, and really easy as you just bind it with some water and fry them.
If you haven't got a recipe for H/M nuggets or fishcakes, I can let you know how I make mine if you are interested The baked potatoes are so yummy, but very fat laden

tortoise · 28/02/2007 17:10

I think there is a recipe for fish cakes in the 2nd dinner lady book i have.
Nugget one would be good though, thanks.

Fooey · 28/02/2007 18:08

Welcome fleacircus! We like newbies and we love presumption

Sounds like you are walking the 10 / 10 walk already. I must confess I have never had quinoa in a salad so don't know quite what to suggest, but I have a great citrusy / nutty salad dressing recipe if you think it needs something zesty.

Greeves! Nockney! You all look fab! If you want a shortened name, just gut the middle out of your name and see what you get. It can't be worse than Fooey, surely

Seeds do not count. We devoted pages and pages to this before. They are marvellous, we love them, you should eat them, but they are NOT a fruit or a vegetable.

"you can really pack it away early morning can't you?"

oh yes indeed I can

Fooey · 28/02/2007 18:54

I have had breakfast: apple, pear, grapes, soya milk, raisins, satsuma

lunch: possibly 1/2 portion of raisins, butternut squash etc in M + S salads, an apple

tea: asparagus and broccoli, tomato and mushroom sauce on a loaf

hmm not v impressive, had better go and eat fruit

Ovun · 28/02/2007 19:23

Right well, think I managed to "pack it in" as well today. 2 Bananas, blueberry juice, 2 apples, seaweed, cauliflower/celeriac soup (also had onion and leeks in it)
Done some energetic dancing, and jumping games with the dcs too
Tortoise - Chicken nuggets: I only made for the first time earlier this month. I cut chicken breast into small chunks, then rolled them in flour (seasoned if you like) and then breadcrumbs. I baked mine, the only need 15 - 20 mins as so small. Very easy.

tortoise · 28/02/2007 19:27

Wow That does sound easy! What oven temp?

My F&V list looks pretty poor to others.
I can only ass apple to the list so far. No veg with tea.

Will munch a couple of raw carrots later!

Exercise is just lots of walking as usual. About 3 and a half miles in all i would think.

Greeves · 28/02/2007 19:29

I am having a curry

I have had the mother of all lousy days (well, no, actually it was pretty mediocre, but I haven't enjoyed it much) and I am HUNGRY, so have weakened and sent dh out for something viciously hot.

So the soup I made (beetroot, red cabbage, red onion, smoked garlic, tomato, paprika, lemongrass and ginger - sounds vile but isn't) will have to wait until tomorrow. Still, the kids ate it and they don't know about the takeaway

Ovun · 28/02/2007 19:34

Greeves, that sounds quite nice to me But then I will make soup out of any thing
tortoise - I think I got that wrong you should dip the chicken in beaten egg, then flour if you can be bothered, but deffo breadcrumbs. I would say 200, think that is gas no6

Greeves · 28/02/2007 19:37

It is nice, it's really nice, but I have cracked tonight and want something....more

Nockney · 28/02/2007 19:57

Today I have had:

  • muesli (1)
  • tomato/avocado/mozza salad (3?)
  • burger with some veg on it (1)
  • big leafy salad (2)

Will probably have some citrus now.

Have had 80 minutes? Or more? of biking, including three sessions of 20 minutes each.

Am very very very tired. Might make chocolate biscuits tomorrow.

Ovun · 28/02/2007 20:06

Hi Nockney. Thats precise, including the lettuce in your burger , mind you it all counts. As ever impressed with your exercise regime
Greeves, enjoy your curry, just don't forget to count the garlic and onion that will inevitably be in it What with the curry and the soup, I wouldn't want to be in your house tomorrow. FARTathon.
There is a thread tonight about dcs saying Fart. Mine say it more and more these days, I think our 10/10 diet might be to blame

Nockney · 28/02/2007 20:11

The burger had tomatoes and lots of avocado on it. :-P

Actually, it was a bloody lovely burger, and I will be going back to that place again. Pity the fries were (once again) minging. Must find and revive my 'hunt for good fries' thread.

Tatties · 28/02/2007 20:12

Today I have had raisins, blueberries, banana, satsuma, sweetcorn in pasta salad, cannellini beans with dinner... that's not enough is it? I was sure I'd eaten more than that... Also done a lot of walking, a fair bit uphill and all of it pushing heavy ds in the buggy so I am tired tonight.

NQC, every time you say 'mozza' it gets me all excited

Fooey · 28/02/2007 20:15

Ovun welcome to the abbreviated names club

it takes so much less time to say hello to you all now

Greeves sorry you have had a cack day, anything you would like to share? (not vomit related?)

Nockney where are all these tricolore salads coming from? I feel envious every time you have had one

Tortoise just keep pegging away at it, you are doing well. Did you munch the carrots?

Fooey · 28/02/2007 20:15

Ooh and Miss Tatties too

Get you and your Mozza fetish

Tatties · 28/02/2007 20:16

I am going to get a raw carrot now

Nockney · 28/02/2007 20:17

They're from 'our' local cafe. I don't generally bother going on my own (although I should! They've stopped having the TV on) and DH won't go without me as the owner once told me about him having chocolate milkshakes there.

It's very nice, run by an Italian bloke who has kids. Not wholefoody at all, but has some nice sarnies, that tricolore salad (with a balsamic extraction drizzled on it ... well, they drizzle it on everything and my kids love it), some very tempting desserts, and nice coffee. (Unfortunately smoking is allowed. Otherwise it's near-perfect.)

Nockney · 28/02/2007 20:18

What's with the mozza thing? I do like mozza, and will eat the nice wet kind very happily.

That tricolore salad has got to be one of my favourite lunches ever, though. No real carb. Lots of calories. And lovely.

tortoise · 28/02/2007 20:21

Yes! I've had a huge raw carrot and a smaller one!
Fart power is deadly at the moment. My poor DD's run a mile if they hear a fart!
(fart or popper here)DD1 said i was smelly Mummy.

Fooey · 28/02/2007 20:25

"I do like mozza, and will eat the nice wet kind very happily."

Ooh lordy Miss Tatties steady yourself now

Ovun · 28/02/2007 20:25

NOckney hat cafe sound nice, apart from the smoking (roll on the ban in public places thats what I say) Burger sounds fantastic too, but I'm with you on this, good fries/chips are so hard to fin.
Tatties, it depends on how much you had of those things, if you had lots of blueberries, you could easily have had 3 portions. So do not be discouraged
Fooey, I joined this shortened name thing, just to fit in I'm a lemming, I didn't even see the original thread
