For anyone who wants a boost to their general health. The suggested goals are:

EAT 10 PORTIONS OF FRUIT AND VEGETABLES EVERY DAY - if you don't usually eat much fruit and veg I would build up gradually or you could upset your digestion.

DO (AT LEAST) 10 MINUTES OF EXERCISE EVERY DAY - can be yoga, stretching or something more energetic. The plan is that the idea of doing 10 minutes is not too daunting, and having started you may well find you want to do more.

There are no restrictions on what you eat so long as you get your 10 fruit and veg as well. The focus is not on weight loss but on improving our energy levels and hopefully our general mood and well-being. Sign up below and post here to tell us how you're getting on and how you are feeling.

Basic guidance on what constitutes a portion of fruit and veg here and more detailed information here

Bad luck about the pan of veg tortoise. But the night is still young, there are carrots waiting to be eaten. Sorry to hear your budget is against you, that doesn't help Keep up your good efforts though, 3 bits of fruit is better than one or none

Oh, I've had ... um ... some tomato on a sandwich. And some broccoli in tea. Oh, and some chocolate and courgette cake. I'll have a citrus binge in a bit.

Did 30 minutes running this morning, didn't really feel up to it. Then an hour's walking, later. Might take tomorrow off(ish) from exercise.

Greensleeves · 01/03/2007 19:20

Broccoli in tea?

Nockney · 01/03/2007 19:54

As in, our evening meal, which I call tea, out of some sense of ironic non-Englishness, had brocolli in it. (Also lots of garlic.)

tortoise · 01/03/2007 20:12

Have had 2 raw carrots only 1 left. Might have enough pennies for a bag of carrots. Better than nothing.
Also had 7 custard creams!! Shame they don't count.

FrannyandZooey · 01/03/2007 20:48

Ooh yes tortoise if you can only buy one f + v a carrot is a good, cheap, and nutritious one. Apples can also be reasonable if you buy bog standard ones from the market.

I am starving and eating Lindt chocolate. I was in a rush today so had a very plain sandwichy, non-vegetabley (to which ds said "I don't want this lunch, I want a proper lunch with chopped up carrots and things" )

but then a big bowl of veg stew and rice for dinner. However I am still feeling empty and as we have v little fruit until our box delivery tomorrow, I am going to have to eat biscuits or something.

Oh HUMMUS is at last back in the shops! Oh joy! Actually scrub the above, am going to have a plate of hummus and veg

Greensleeves · 01/03/2007 20:53

I tried FOUR different shops yesterday and couldn't find ANY houmous

It's my mainstay. I really really want some and there isn't any

Tatties · 01/03/2007 20:57

Today I have had raisins, dried apricots, a big juicey medjool date, satsuma, raspberries, blueberries, and leek in kedgeree for dinner. Great for fruit, but not so great on veg today. I don't feel like eating anything else now though, feeling quite tired and premenstrual.

But I did go shopping this morning, so I should have enough in to snack on for the next few days. Ds made me buy some ginger today, he wanted to eat it in the shop!

tortoise · 01/03/2007 20:59

What is hummus and what does it taste like?
Is it something i should be trying?
Going to have banana now (in custard!)

FrannyandZooey · 01/03/2007 21:00

Ahem spelling is in fact a forte of mine

mmmmmm, smell that tahini loveliness

mmmm a whole pot, just for me

OP posts:
FrannyandZooey · 01/03/2007 21:02

Tortoise, it is fab and so tasty, not actually wildly healthy because the shop bought stuff is so salty (and infected with salmonella, apparently), but it does have chickpeas and sesame seeds in it, and is LURVERLY to dip raw veg into

OP posts:
Tatties · 01/03/2007 21:02

Oh yes I had a banana on my porridge this morning, forgot about that!

Hummus is lovely, but I get a bit irrationally freaky about eating stuff which has previously been withdrawn... What was the problem with it anyway?

Tatties · 01/03/2007 21:05

Actually, has anyone made their own hummus? I have several tins of chickpeas in the cupboard

dandycandyjellybean · 01/03/2007 21:11

Sorry never posted on this thread before, but make my own hummus pretty regularly. I just put a couple of tins of chickpeas in a food processor, with a clove of garlic and the juice of a lemon. (you could add tahini paste too, but I'm not so keen). process it, you'll find that you'll need to stop a couple of times and squash it all back down into the bowl. Then i gradually add a few good glugs of olive oil (i use the stuff that I marinade my olives in coz it's garlicky and chilly-y!?? Keep processing till it's the consistency that you like (I like it really, really smooth). I also tend to add some hot tabasco sauce. When I've had parties, I've made red pesto hummus (just adding a good big spoon of red pesto to taste) and also black olive and chille hummus, both which disappeared in minutes. I have to add that i HAVE to eat it with loads and loads of olives, but perhaps that's just me!. mmmmmmm, making me hungry. hth. enjoy.

Tatties · 01/03/2007 21:15

Cubby thanks for that

FrannyandZooey · 01/03/2007 21:19

Ooh Cubby thanks for that. Feel like joining us, perhaps? Seeing as how you seem to be named after a piece of broccoli and all?

Tatties there was salmonella or suspected salmonella in a Belgian factory which makes it. As ever, when there are these food scares, one of the most frightening things was realising that virtually ALL of the hummus in the UK is coming from the same factory. There was practically no hummus or even related chickpea type products available at all in supermarkets until they got the problem sorted out.

Oh well, if you're into spelling everything phonetically....

nite nite franee, wil see yoo soon, i luv yoo and i wont to hav yor babees

FrannyandZooey · 01/03/2007 21:29

Ah, I get it, you are one of these people who say

"HOOO-muss"

It is Hmm-us

not hooo-muss

and certainly not Hugh-muss like my mother says

OP posts:
Fonk · 02/03/2007 07:24

am mystified and at people buying houmous (I will use my dead languages degree if need be to argue that there is NO correct spelling. But please don't make me cos I can't be arsed really)

everyone is sick chez fonk. haven't eaten much except fruit, bread + peanut butter + banana flavour ABs since tuesday

ok off to die, ta-ra!

Nockney · 02/03/2007 08:12

I've made it myself before, but struggled to get through all that I made (one tin of chickpeas' worth), and wasn't sure how long it kept.

(Actually, I think I also had some of the ratios not quite right, and needed to fiddle some more.)

I am not feeling entirely well today - am freezing to death. I was pretty worn down yesterday, too.

Anyway, DS1 is off school (sore throat, doesn't mind missing fish and chips, so must be poorly), so I won't be doing any big walks or bikes. Will no doubt eat fine, anyway.

Greensleeves · 02/03/2007 08:14

I am having cold congealied pizza for breakfast...so that's some tomato stuff, and some jalapenos, and black olives

Lots and lots of orange juice too

Greensleeves · 02/03/2007 08:16

I pronounce it hommuss, not hummus

tell your mother that humus is black rotten vegetation

Greensleeves · 02/03/2007 08:18

Sorry you are feeling manky NQC

I advise big cosy warm jumper, lots of hot drinks and don't bother doing any exercise today.

FrannyandZooey · 02/03/2007 08:19

Sorry to hear of all illnesses even those self-inflicted ones Miss Greeny

pizza and oj for breakfast is a bit of a hangover giveaway isn't it?

I find hummus made from tinned chickpeas tastes a bit, well, tinned, and I can't be arsed to soak chickpeas. Plus hate having anything to do with garlic so it is shop bought all the way in my house.

Fonk and NQC I hope you pull through and that your recovery is aided by lots and lots of fruity goodness
