For anyone who wants a boost to their general health. The suggested goals are:

EAT 10 PORTIONS OF FRUIT AND VEGETABLES EVERY DAY - if you don't usually eat much fruit and veg I would build up gradually or you could upset your digestion.

DO (AT LEAST) 10 MINUTES OF EXERCISE EVERY DAY - can be yoga, stretching or something more energetic. The plan is that the idea of doing 10 minutes is not too daunting, and having started you may well find you want to do more.

There are no restrictions on what you eat so long as you get your 10 fruit and veg as well. The focus is not on weight loss but on improving our energy levels and hopefully our general mood and well-being. Sign up below and post here to tell us how you're getting on and how you are feeling.

Basic guidance on what constitutes a portion of fruit and veg here and more detailed information here

I am LOL at "usual walking about" for some reason...

Right you have both done admirably. Greeny you do know rye bread doesn't count? I am sure you were just name dropping it I have had apple, pear, grapes, soya milk, raisins, baked beans mixed with black-eyed beans, big salad with spinach leaves, cucumber, carrot, beetroot, tomato.

Am starving and going to eat some more fruit. No gym

Oh sorry to hear that Fonk

would now be the wrong time to try to persuade you to change permanently to Fonk btw?

How did nursery go?

Fonk · 27/02/2007 21:02

it was splendid akturley

for ds

dd missed him massively

he had a great time, though there was a small altercation with a little girl over the correct way to make pancakes (to add baking soda or not...tricky...)

Fonk · 27/02/2007 21:03

my god my kid is a ponce also

how did that happen?

Fooey · 27/02/2007 21:26

Why a ponce? Because of pancakes? I am glad it all went well.

Overrun · 27/02/2007 22:18

Hello,
My pc wouldn't start this morning, so as you can see, we have got it working now
I've sort of skimmed the thread. Tortoise, my ds1 is very fussy, so will try and think if I can add any ideas to the lovely ones people have come up with (esp franny).
Just watched an episode of Jamies school dinners on More4, didn't catch it the first time, its appalling what children eat every day But it is so hard to get them to eat healthily sometimes. Ds1 has never fallen for any of the hide veg/fruit in stuff, his healthy stuff radar is amazing He starts disecting it on the plate "Whats this got in it" he says, looking all betrayed by my duplicity.
I had some lovely fruit and veg, have had some juicy clementines, banana, apple, strawberries and blueberries for tea. Pomegranite juice, peas, home made coleslaw (funnily enough Franny An extremely fiery watercress salad, and a cous cous salad with loads of cucumber, onion, tomatoe.
No exercise I'm afraid, had planned to take them to the park, but god it did not stop raining.
Didn't feel too low when I last posted, but god to I feel awful today PMT city I'm afraid

Fooey · 28/02/2007 07:34

Oh that is gruesome Overrun, I hope things improve quickly. Your f + v consumption sounds fab and is making me jealous

btw if anyone wants a silly name like me and Filly please feel free to join us (don't all rush at once or anything )

Papillon · 28/02/2007 07:56

people always cooking my food for me these days would not know a portion from a take over. My family eat lots of potatoes, due to growing them.

Eating lots of apples

llip · 28/02/2007 08:07

here you go fooey

Overrun · 28/02/2007 08:41

Whats with the silly names then?
Thanks for tea and sympathy Well it looks a bit brighter today, so will take them to the music group and maybe park later.

In a way I don't deserve it, as I love cooking so much, its a pleasure thinking of new recipes that are laden with good things As you all know its the exercise bit that pulls me down.
I was planning to go swimming on Wednesday afternoons while dcs are looked after, but am now going to attend a welsh speaking group instead. I am planning to learn to speak Welsh as dcs are going down the welsh medium school route. So I have a valid reason, but yet again exercise has been knocked off the top spot.
Tortoise - It is really hard trying to get dcs to eat healthily, I know. With ds1 he is given the same as every one else, and usually will eat the potatoe and meat/fish but will pick out the veg from any sauce or casserole.
We have tried all sorts of approaches, and actually old fashioned bribery is working quite well at the moment. I have given up on not threatening "no dessert" or sweet things on the basis of that it promotes them as treats and other food as something to be endured. As he clearly sees them this way anyway.
He tried a strawberry for the first time in his life yesterday, hurray. And the secret to my sucess, saying to him"If you wont try a strawberry, we wont let you have a strawberry jam, or strawberry milk or strawberry ice cream"
Will post more later, ta ra for now

Greeves · 28/02/2007 08:50

I am having a banana and an apple for breakfast because i am running late and haven't got time for muesli (yes, yes, I shouldn't be frittering away precious minutes on here)

SauerKraut · 28/02/2007 09:01

I have had my usual coffee and custard creams, and shall now partake of bread and cheese with chicory, possibly followed by an apple. You are all fruitily inspiring! Am particularly amazed at how much veg people are managing to get down them!

Fonk · 28/02/2007 09:07

chicory is a veg, y'know...

are you not a german vegeatble dish involving cabbage?

SauerKraut · 28/02/2007 09:11

So it is, gosh, that's rather radical of me! No, I am a particularly odd-sounding form of the German language! Which doesn't sound so bad now that I can understand it...

Fonk · 28/02/2007 09:13

you are a cabbage

SauerKraut · 28/02/2007 09:24

Taken literally, yes, I am- I have even eaten myself, but have found myself not to agree with my IBS. Here they do it with juniper berries and it actually tastes quite nice. My name was meant as a probably rather insulting play on words regarding Swiss German, though!

NotQuiteCockney · 28/02/2007 09:33

ow.

Greeves · 28/02/2007 10:05

NQC you should be Nockney

Nockney · 28/02/2007 10:15

This works.

I am quite sore today. Yesterday was lots of running, lots of walking, and then a night out in women's shoes, albeit comfy women's shoes, lots of standing up.

So my quads are tight, my feet are sore, and there's something particularly up with my right foot. Oh, and my head is sore, too. Whoops.

Today I have already done 40 minutes or so (more really, with the wind) of biking, and I am committed to at least another 40 minutes.

Nockney · 28/02/2007 10:15

Why is everyone shortening their names?

fleacircus · 28/02/2007 10:46

Hello, I'm any old fool, does that mean I can join? It's DP's turn to cook this week, had lovely Thai curry with lots and lots of aubergine, spring onion, green beans and courgettes on Monday, followed by a salad (he often does that). Don't like fruit much but had a banana. Yesterday salmon and roasted tomatoes plus tomato salad, followed by fruit salad (trying to work on the fruit thing) for lunch and for dinner DP's jerusalem artichoke soup then a red rice and quinoa salad. I liked the grains in that a lot but was disappointed by the dressing, DP got the recipe from Saturday's Guardian. Did anyone else try it? Has anyone got any suggestions for alternatives? We thought maybe something sharper or sourer, like lime juice or chilli even, would be better.

Goodness, what a long post, apologies for being such a presumptuous newbie.

StrangeTown · 28/02/2007 13:01

Welcome Flea - don't worry one bit about the post, there is some serious wind of the verbal and non verbal kind on this thread anyway.

Had a decent few days. Had onion, tomato, basil tart for tea last night with spinach, rocket and watercress salad.

Banana and salad sandwich so far today. Am working away for next few days so will no doubt decline and od on bread products at the hotel breakfast.
Franny, I am in awe of your breakfast fruit consumption btw - you can really pack it away early morning can't you?

Love your post NQC - very pleased to hear that we can now officially count standing up in women's shoes as excercise. About time too.

tortoise · 28/02/2007 13:17

Hello.
So far today Ive had raisins (probably 2 portions!), mandarin, carrot and spring onion. Will have an apple in bit.

Veg isn't really a problem with my DD1 its more what to give her with it instead of fish cakes/fish fingers or sausages.
Ive had a good read of suggestions and will try some with them all. Need a tasting session i think!
