I had all the signs of a UTI ( I get them recurrently and know exactly how my body responds), unfortunately couldn't get an appt with my regular GP so saw a practice nurse. She said my dipstick was clear (it often is - I get symptoms before the bacteria is enough to show on a dipstick) and sent me home. I suffered at home for several days before getting in to see my GP who admitted me to the ward with a severe kidney infection. 'Why on earth didn't you come sooner' she asked, 'I DID' I growled through gritted teeth. We now have a system where I have a standing prescription for UTI which any GP can issue on a phone call from me.

The moral is - it can still be infection with a clear dipstick! Also as others have said urology will expect him to have had a course of antibiotics and it'll only muddy the water (so to speak) if he hasn't.

BalaRua · 05/01/2017 13:43

Stupid man won't listen to reason! He HAS had clear dipsticks the whole time and almost no sign of infection. He's now decided to ring urology and ask if he should take them!

You are a very patient lady Grin. I hope he will listen to them.

BalaRua · 05/01/2017 14:13

They said no!!!! They said that since there was no growth and there's no pain on urinating or any other signs of uti then don't take them.

toldmywraath · 05/01/2017 14:26

Oh dear OP. I hope he got the name of the person giving that advice, because you know what will happen when he turns up for his urology appointment and another doctor asks why he hasn't taken prescribed medication. I wonder why the GP prescribed medication, is your husband more qualified than the GP?

toldmywraath · 05/01/2017 14:27

Sorry I didn't mean to sound sarcastic, it's a genuine question. Blush

BalaRua · 05/01/2017 14:37

DH isn't more qualified than the GP he saw, no. The GP apparently filled out the script before even checking DH's urine results or dipping the sample he'd brought in with him.

toldmywraath · 05/01/2017 14:41

Oh I see, thank you for responding. I know that at our GPs they are loathe to prescribe antibiotics just in case as it were. Hope your DH starts improving soon.

GloriaGaynor · 05/01/2017 14:41

No worries OP. As long as urgology are happy with what he's doing and it won't hold up his treatment, then it's fine.

If he develops any sign of infection - fever, shivering, severe pain, then call them or the GP right away.

FeralBeryl · 05/01/2017 14:53

Grin oh Bala I bet you want to swing for him (joking before anyone thinks I'm encouraging violence)
He actually spoke to a medic in Urology? Careful it's not a well meaning admin type. Definitely get a name - gold star for whoever suggested that, and to anyone else who needs to ring departments. People are a lot more definitive once they've handed their name over....

Thinkingblonde · 05/01/2017 18:14

He needs to take the antibiotics prescribed, I have long standing prescription for a low dosage antibiotic. Like app mentioned I often show blood and protein in my urine but no sign of bacteria culture, due to the after effects of a kidney stone that got stuck, it caused full blown blood poisoning and I was very ill, I had a stent fitted to allow me to pass urine. The stent was supposed to be in for six weeks, the time it took for the mobile lithotripsy unit to come to our area, I needed two rounds of lithotripsy as the first session just broke the stone into two. I had to wait another six weeks for the unit to come back. It caused infections and scar tissue to form in the urethra (wee tube). This was 20 years ago and although it is a lot better now I still get uti and know the symptoms before a dipstick shows infection present.

BalaRua · 05/01/2017 18:18

That sounds bloody awful thinking, so sorry that happened to you Flowers.

He's been told he'll have cystoscopy next week.

Hope they get to the bottom of it. Just as an aside, ask his doctor about Bile salt malabsorption, the symptoms of this are very similar to IBS. I am on statins, been on them a year and since then my IBS has almost disappeared. I mentioned it to my doctor who told me it is sometimes a welcome side effect of statins. Hope you're all soon much better.

minisoksmakehardwork · 05/01/2017 22:51

I'm glad he's not dropped with a heart attack as I honestly thought that was where he was heading op.

Anway, at least your dh is in the system, so to speak. So I hope he gets answers and appropriate treatment soon. I do wonder though if gp prescribed anti b's based on the a&e test results if gp didn't dip urine. The I've gone to gp and unexpectedly been prescribed anti biotics, and then been surprised when I actually started feeling better.

DameDiazepamTheDramaQueen · 05/01/2017 23:00

NICE guildlines,as I said before, say men should take antibiotics if there's any chance of a uti that's why GP wrote the script I expect. It's because a uti in a man can get very bad very quickly apparently.

DameDiazepamTheDramaQueen · 05/01/2017 23:04

** according to ds's doctor

Copperas · 08/01/2017 10:26

How are you all doing now?

BalaRua · 08/01/2017 15:25

Thanks for asking - DS has had horrible croup and I've just about had enough sleep last night, for the first night since NYE. DH is fine, his wee looks normal but still gets blood and protein on his dipsticks. Just awaiting his rapid access clinic appointment on Thursday now which I believe aims to give you a diagnosis on the day.

OP posts:
Haggisfish · 08/01/2017 16:08

Poor you Bala-croup is horrible. Glad dh wee is less awful looking. Hope appt goes well.

Copperas · 08/01/2017 18:57

You've really had a hard time. Fingers crossed then

SplodgeBear1988 · 11/01/2017 21:32

Good luck for tomorrow, I hope you get some answers and a way forward. I will be thinking of you. I hope you manage to get some sleep tonight.

jumpingcold · 12/01/2017 18:03

How did you get on Bala?

Chickydoo · 12/01/2017 20:02

Hope the appointment went well

BalaRua · 12/01/2017 21:01

I've had awful flu and nearly didn't go to the hospital with poor DH- he went alone and then I went up an hour or so after and met him there (he hadn't seen my texts so was pleasantly surprised). Cystoscopy negative thank god. He's also had xrays, no results yet and booked in for ultrasound. Thanks for all the support Flowers. Poor man is in agony after the scope but feels guilty moaning because 'you had a baby ffs!' Bless him Smile
