Come and cosy up with a steaming bowl of parsnip soup - 10 / 10 club November thread

For anyone who wants a boost to their general health. The suggested goals are:

EAT 10 PORTIONS OF FRUIT AND VEGETABLES EVERY DAY

(if you don't usually eat much fruit and veg I would build up gradually or you could upset your digestion)

DO (AT LEAST) 10 MINUTES OF EXERCISE EVERY DAY

(can be yoga, stretching or something more energetic. The plan is that the idea of doing 10 minutes is not too daunting, and having started you may well find you want to do more)

There are no restrictions on what you eat so long as you get your 10 fruit and veg as well. The focus is not on weight loss but on improving our energy levels and hopefully our general mood and well-being.

Sign up below and post here to tell us how you're getting on and how you are feeling.

I thought I would just start a thread for this month, and then if it gets too long we can have "November part 2" etc.

Hope everyone is well and will join us on the new thread. Oldtimers please come and say hello even if you are not following the 10 / 10 plan right now, and please come in and make yourself at home if you are new and would like to try this way of eating.

I am off shopping later and going to get some hummus as I already have lots of raw veg that needs eating up. I had a great dinner last night at this place but do feel a bit full and sluggish today from having eaten too much. And the bread and butter pudding was not as nice as yours NQC!

Morning all

Glad you had a great dinner Franny. We got a takeaway - had split pea daal and spinach & potato curry which was yummy. (Thank you again for your counselling session, btw, how much do I owe you?!)

Just got back from babygym with ds, he's had me running after him so I'm knackered! Also have my pilates tonight.

Have lots of juicy satsumas in the house so I plan to eat some of those today. Going to make a vegetable bake for dinner tonight with potatoes, leek, cauliflower and maybe carrots (if I don't put them in I'll make a carrot cake I reckon )

Paps, here is my Yellow Split Pea Soup recipe:

225g yellow split peas
2 litres water (I'm sure I have used stock before)
2 onions, finely chopped
2 carrots, finely sliced
1 garlic clove, crushed

  • Put split peas in water and simmer gently for 40-50 mins until tender, then puree.
  • Meanwhile, cook onion gently for about 7mins, until tender and lightly browned
  • Add carrot, stir, cover & cook for further 5 mins. Stir in garlic, cook for 1-2 mins, then gradually pour in split pea puree, stirring until smooth.
  • Let simmer for 5-10 minutes, and season. (You might need to add some water if it's too thick - my soups often end up like stews!)

Sometimes I just bung split peas in with whatever other veggie soup I'm making - have to rember to soak them though. I put them in a parsnip soup recently and that was really nice.

FrannyonFire · 06/11/2006 12:11

I am going to make a soup tonight as well, I usually do whatever root veg is knocking about and some red lentils. Swede, parsnip and butternut squash are the best, I think. Gorgeous.

The counselling was free but you have to promise to say "superb post Franny" whenever you see me around MN

Superb post Franny

I have eaten a grand total of one small banana and two cups of black coffee today..... am shortly to redress the balance with some muesli and a tangerine.

FrannyandZooey · 06/11/2006 12:18

Greeny are you on a crash diet because the meet up is 2 weeks away? Are you?

I was thinking about you at the weekend and I thought "I bet Greeny is eating nothing but radishes, and next week she will be desperately poorly, and I will be cross."

So take heed

Clary · 06/11/2006 12:24

hello all, sorry not posted on this for ages (not spotted threads tbh

Today have had pineapple (left from last night yummy), banana, big satsuma, pear, just eating bake potato with tuna and broc/cauli for lunch. That makes 6. Also have apple in bag.

Long walk to work this am (after nursery drop off) plus pilates tonight I hope. This is a good day

Clary · 06/11/2006 12:25

actually weekend was good as went swimming last night and we had lamb carreole with tomatoes, mushrooms, carrots an donions plus leeks for tea yesterday.

FrannyandZooey · 06/11/2006 12:37

Clary nice to see you and sorry you have not seen the threads. I think I have been a little lax about linking, but if you scroll down in the health section you should see the thread bobbing about there somewhere. I'll put 10 / 10 in the title each time to make it easier to find.

Noooooo not moaning at you franny, just me being lax at looking I meant.

(MN so hard to navigate these days)

Overrun · 06/11/2006 13:12

Hi all,
thought I would pop in and say hello. I have no shortage of vegatables, as I forgot to cancel my box last week while we were away.
The next one is due tomorrow. Cue some serious soups I think.
So far only a banana and a apple. Haven't had time to cook anything as I am trying to unpack from half term.
Was due to have an op on wednesday (same op as got cancelled in Sept), but now my Asthma is too bad. Bugger
So plan to have lots of garlicky vitamins to get me back to health.
How are you all? Franny how is your throat and exercising, did you go to the Doctors?

PyroPaps · 06/11/2006 13:21

I make a large amount as we seem to eat it all and if friends come over we have warm food

Yellow Split Pea Soup

500g yellow split peas
4 litres water
1 onions
2 carrots
4 small potatoes (1/2 or 1 butternut when available is delicious)
1/2 leek chopped
2 - 3 courgettes
3 - 4 garlic cloves

  • Put split peas in water and simmer gently for 40-50 mins until tender.
  • In a large saucepan put oil, a whole onion, the garlic, potatoes and/or pumpkin, leeks, carrot and courgettes. Add stock (meat or vege) then,
  • Put cooked split peas in with the vegetables and puree.
  • Low heat for 5 minutes and season. My soups always need more water so add for thickness perference.

I am going to try and not alot of exercise tbh this week. Until my first gym class on Thursday when I have dance aerobics I am looking forwards to it as I love to dance - a ballet child

Had the best sleep in ages last night and am eating lots of mandarins.

Nice to see you Clary. Greensleeves I think you killed the banana portions with the coffee

Anniversary girls, I remember a mate of mine here had her anniversary yesterday - another one!

PyroPaps · 06/11/2006 15:30

further ingredients for Split pea soup, all optional

ginger - cook in with vege
balsamic vinegar - 1 - 2 Tblsp or to taste

I can never stick to a recipe, I cooked up a bulghar and lentil meal based on this recipe , but I did not make the balls and instead of tarragon put in some miso. It was yum and the kids liked it. I am going to try it next time with courgettes to get the vege. Might make the balls one day

MrsOhHu · 06/11/2006 15:45

Great to see some new ideas for soup and things! Can anyone suggest what I could do with a red cabbage and a squash? I expect I have some other bits and bobs, but I'm not good at red cabbage. I've almost run out of sausages too.

PyroPaps · 06/11/2006 16:46

I am a shocker at writing recipes! here is another bit I missed out

After afew stirs of the vege in the oil you should put a lid on and leave for at least 20 mins - low temp - before adding cooked split peas.

The squash, is it the stringy variety? Could you not do something abit French tasting with that as a soup? Fry the squash abit first with some cloves of garlic chopped in half and a tomato. I would chuck in some frozen peas at the end - puree and season.

what about sweet & sour red cabbage, its warming and good in winter - am doing it tonight to go with aubergine tomato bake:

melt 1 & 1/2 tbs butter and add onion (small, chopped) and brown sugar (2 tbs) cook til soft, golden then add 1/2 small red cabbage shredded, 1/4 cup of mild vinegar, 2 apples thinly sliced.
Cover, cook on high til steaming then reduce heat to low til cooked, about 10 minutes-ish

roasted squash is easy (chopped, oil, oven)

Dont have recipe for both together though!

i also like red cabbage raw in winter salad with grated carrot, spring onion, radish, peppers, sunflower seeds, and anything else you fancy - good and crunchy and will keep for couple of days

hope this helps!

suzycreamcheese · 06/11/2006 18:13

just realised all we are eating is purple tonight - aubergine, beetroot, red cabbage!

FrannyonFire · 06/11/2006 18:17

Overrun I am really meaning to make an appointment, truly

It was fine for a while (I just toned things down at the gym) but then I was blowing up balloons at the weekend and it happened again It is definitely breathing / lungs / throat related

Some gorgeous recipes and ideas on here tonight. I am so hungry. We are having mushroom stroganoff with savoy cabbage and red quinoa (never had it before)

Pilates tonight was very relaxing - lots of gentle stretching, nothing too difficult, and I came away feeling really chilled. Then Classic fm in the car on the way home - lovely!

Here's a question for all you pilates-goers: are you ever asked to lie in the foetal position as part of the wind-down to the class? We do this sometimes, and it often makes me feel, erm, emotional.

FrannyonFire · 06/11/2006 22:08

Aw Tatties

not quite the same, but I am always taken aback quite how primevally soothing it feels to be rocked

I can often be found in the middle of Mothercare on that glider chair thing, crooning to myself and snarling at anyone who tries to get me to leave

OP posts:
Clary · 07/11/2006 09:49

lol at franny snarling in Mothercare!

I'm doing well this week (always start well) - pilates last night followed by tomato, avocado and mozzarella salad.

This am I went swimming before work! and have pepper, toms, cucumber, apple, orange and 2 bananas (plus a sandwich) for lunch/snacks.

Exercise may not keep up this standard but pilates was excellent last night

(no foetal position tho tatties but bless.)

GunpowderTreasonAndSNOT · 07/11/2006 09:55

Franny, go to the quack and get to the bottom of this lung thing will you, it is worrying me now

I have had two glasses of orange juice this morning and am shortly to consume a banana and some muesli with apple juice on it.
