For anyone who wants a boost to their general health. The suggested goals are:

EAT 10 PORTIONS OF FRUIT AND VEGETABLES EVERY DAY

(if you don't usually eat much fruit and veg I would build up gradually or you could upset your digestion)

DO (AT LEAST) 10 MINUTES OF EXERCISE EVERY DAY

(can be yoga, stretching or something more energetic. The plan is that the idea of doing 10 minutes is not too daunting, and having started you may well find you want to do more)

There are no restrictions on what you eat so long as you get your 10 fruit and veg as well. The focus is not on weight loss but on improving our energy levels and hopefully our general mood and well-being.

Sign up below and post here to tell us how you're getting on and how you are feeling.

here you go, greeny

am disguisng myself as franny anyway

Overrunnerbean · 17/11/2006 09:44

Another lapsed vegetarian here aviatrix, although thats a bit misleading as I did make a conscious decision to eat meat again. We don't eat a lot of it though, love fish a lot, so we eat that about twice a week.
Dh is a real meat eater, and has adapted quite well to the healthier diet we are adopting these days. Mind you, thats very big of him, considering its partly for his cholesterol's benefit
Still looking for a pilates class that isn't on between 8 and 9.30 on a Sunday night, wtf
Sorry so many of you feel unwell, at least I feel like I am in good company this Autumn

yeah, I know, generous of him or what
Lamb is one of the meats that I would find hard to live without.
btw, my carrot cake has collapsed. Was making it for school fair tomorrow. Now we can eat it, yay

FrannyandZooey · 17/11/2006 12:21

I scared myself this week; someone asked me when was the last time I ate meat and it was 21 years ago

how did I end up being a Grown Up???

YoureTheOneForMeTatties · 17/11/2006 13:01

lol Franny. I always felt like an adult when I was a child

Oh alright then Franny and friends, you have shamed me into trying to up my fruit and veg intake. (I am not bad on the excercise front - I play netball 2-3 times per week and do pilates at home).BUT I am shite at healthy eating. I find it really hard to eat well, so am getting organised - have had avocado, tomato, orange and pineapple so far today, lots of veg with tea and am making apple and blackberry crumble for pud. So thank you for encouraging us in this...I am still not convinced on them there mooncups however, a bridge to far at the moment, we have only just got tampax compak up here.

Enjoy you meal aviatrix

Strangetown two tampax inserted thread here tonight, would not happen with a mooncup - hippy attitude is safer!

I have not eaten very well today

StrangeTown · 19/11/2006 00:43

Oh Papillion, just seen the double tampax thread. Not nice. I seriously had never heard of Mooncups until I came on here, so maybe the idea just grows on you!
DH enjoyed dinner with lots of fruit and veg...think it will be harder at work all day.

FrannyandZooey · 19/11/2006 15:49

Oh welcome StrangeTown, nice to meet you

I think you will provide a bit of balance as I have noticed most of us are healthy eaters and not so hot on the exercise front, so maybe you can give some inspiration while we try to encourage you in the fruit and veg stakes.

Could you take veggies and a small carton of dip plus some fruit that is easily portable and easy to peck at, such as grapes, satsumas etc to work? I saw mini tubs of hummus in M+S today, or you can buy alittle plastic tub and refill it from a large pot.

FrannyandZooey · 19/11/2006 15:51

Oh nearly forgot, I met Olivia from Mumsnet HQ last night and she was lovely and said she is a big fan of this thread

YoureTheOneForMeTatties · 19/11/2006 21:35

Did you have a good night Franny?

I have done well with f&V today, I've had a banana, orange, apple, grapes, juice, tomtato in sandwich, and dp made a veggie curry for dinner so that was a couple more portions. Oh and a kiwi! Think that's 10. Feel a bit niggly though, hope I'm not getting a cold...

You know, I don't always remark how eating more f&v makes me feel better, but I really notice if I have eaten somthing crappy in a lapsed moment. It does make me feel physically awful.

Welcome StrangeTown, I do like your name. We'll have you converted to the old Mooncup in no time my dear

OliviaMumsnet · 19/11/2006 21:51

I am indeed a big fan of this thread.
I was particularly inspired by the glowing picture of health that is F&Z so will be watching and trying to participate with great interest (if not always posting, HQ keeps me very busy y'know. )

YoureTheOneForMeTatties · 19/11/2006 21:57

Welcome Olivia

Oh Franny I meant to say, I am reading a book with a Zooey in it atm (not Franny and Zooey though)

StrangeTown · 19/11/2006 22:39

Thank you everyone for the lovely welcome - it is much appreciated. Have done OK today, although I didn't get to 10 sadly. Have decided to work(and lurk, this is a good combination) from home tomorrow, so that I can go shopping for rest of week at work. I am definitely going to get some satsumas Franny - love em. I am trying to be organic too, but stuff really doesn't last as long does it? Netball tomorrow at least, the advantage of sports like this is that they are not negotiable, we are in several leagues so I can't duck out at last minute...

Papillon · 20/11/2006 07:42

Hi Olivia from MN We are indeed honoured to have a Mumsnet representative on this thread. It feels all official

Had Nachos last night for dinner. I soak/cook the black beans and then eat with loads of gucomole.

ST... Organic products are often longer lasting than non organic. I know they pick organic kiwi fruit later and store it longer than non organic kiwi... maybe it depends on the fruit or vege

Earthymama · 20/11/2006 08:19

I've missed this thread!! I have been following Paul McKenna's guidelines and think 10/10 will fit in well. So please may I join?

I'm keen to join also as I have SIX squashes in my kitchen gazing sadly at me. They look really nice as I have artistically arranged them on the work surface next to the radio but I feel the time has come to get down to serious squash cooking and eating.

I'll donate 2 to my niece, who is pregnant, and am thinking of Squash and Sage Risotto for one of them, also soup. Any other ideas please?

I will do some pilates exercises at home this evening, too.

FrannyandZooey · 20/11/2006 08:52

Welcome Earthymama - can you tell us more about Paul McKenna because I don't know what his guidelines are? Squash is great in any winter stew or soup IMO - and goes particularly well with any other root veg, and lentils.

And welcome Olivia - boy are we chuffed to have you here - and after your comments about me (just thought I had better repeat them in case anyone had missed Olivia saying I was a Glowing Picture Of Health, did you all catch that?) I thought I would mention that you have always been my favourite MN person

StrangeTown what position do you play? I agree it is good to have something non-negotiable to do. There are only 2 evenings where it's convenient for me to go to the gym, so I make darn sure I get there most times - I think it would be much harder if I could just go any night - would probably end up prevaricating much more.

FrannyandZooey · 20/11/2006 08:53

Oh and Tatties what is the book?

Papillon · 20/11/2006 09:06

as long as it wasn´t glowing green in the strob lights Franny

Oh dear Aviatrix, poor you Can anyone take ds for a bit? If not I think constant feeding is a good solution. Will he curl up and have a nap with you? I had a migraine recently, I had to get dp to come home from work because I just couldn't cope with ds. If you have been doing a lot sometimes your body just gives up and forces you to have a rest iyswim. Hope you're feeling better soon.

Welcome Earthymama I am going to Pilates tonight too! Monday night is Pilates night!

Franny the book is called Elsewhere. Along the same lines as Behind the Scenes at the Museum / Lovely Bones. Zooey is the best friend of the protagonist.
