Would like to see my toes again! I want to lose weight because...

I don't know if anyone else is trying to lose weight, but I realised recently that there are various things I do differently since I've put on weight, such as:

I half lie, half sit in an undignified sprawl on the bed to get my tights on since it's too uncomfortable to do it from standing and I'd probably overbalance

I roll out of our (very low down) bed in a kind of sideways, crab-like fashion and then get up from being on my knees. This one must be really attractive to watch!

I'm careful about my back all the time since it's slightly painful and I know it's due to the extra weight on my stomach...

I'm not gargantuan but have about 2 stone to lose. Realised today that not having to worry about the above is another incentive to stick at it.

Anyone else want to share their embarrassing reasons for dieting?? And I have no excuse for being overweight, ds is 4 and I'm not pregnant, although it's only a matter of time before someone asks me when it's due

Leander, join the club. Our dimenions are very similar. My ds is three months old and I am 2 and a half stones overweight.
I have been following the ww prog. for two and a half weeks and lost two pounds first week, two and a half the second.I enjoy having a bit of a moan on mumsnet about aspects of WW but am following it without much of a problem.
Are you breastfeeding your baby? WW suggest quite a healthy additional food allowance for this.
Please join us!
Rhiannon, better success next week

leander · 06/06/2002 22:56

Jasper i didn't make it to join WW tonight but im trying to find another club to join tomorrow.Unfortunatley i'm not bf so i wont get the extra allowance but i'm determined this time that i'm going to lose all this weight! I'll keep you posted.
Congratulations on your weight loss this week .

jessi · 07/06/2002 08:34

I just remembered from when I went to WW that a great thing if you have a sweet tooth was meringues! They are so sweet and 1/2 a point each I think! Also rice cakes and soup for lunch every day. Good luck, I still sort of do WW and it really does work long term.

mckenzie · 07/06/2002 20:55

I have one of the WW recipe books called Pure Points 2002 Cookbook. I've only had it for a week or 2 so haven't tried too many of the recipies but can thoroughly recommend the chicken chow mein, very easy to prepare/cook, DH loved it and so did 1 year old DS. Also, the brownies went down quite well (unless you're an expert on real chocolate brownies apparently and then you'll be quite disappointed)

ps I've been using DH and DS etc on my last few messages assuming that they are short for 'darling husband' and 'darling son' - am I correct?

Reager · 07/06/2002 21:17

Another ww member here. Lost 3 stone first time I joined and then had DD who is now 8 mths old. Had another 3 stone to lose after DD was born. Started in January this year and are on the home straight now. 10 pounds to go to... Find the last stone the hardest. Have stopped filling out the tracker (bad me) and need to up the anti on the exercise front (and stop the fun size maltesers!) Breast feeding program thank goodness.... You really do need to plan meals and wow you go through the veges. Any one else finding the last slog the hardest?

jasper · 07/06/2002 21:29

McKenzie,yes!
Leander you should have no problem finding a club. When I checked on the website there were about 6 within easy reach of me - They are EVERYWHERE! It's like a secret society!

jasper · 07/06/2002 21:31

Well done Reager.
When you say bf prog what do you mean exactly? I was not told of a programme for breastfeeding as such, just that I should aim for 28 points a day.
Did you do this and did you consume as much as you were allowed ? Some days it seems like quite a lot.

reager · 07/06/2002 23:29

Thanks Jasper. By 'program' I was given a piece of paper called 'WW Guidelines for Nursing Mothers'. It has some hints on keeping up milk supply, ie. drinking plenty of fluid, variety of foods, don't waste points on high sugar foods or alcohol. It has daily points for nursing mothers: under 10 stone - 26 pts, 10-12 stone 28 pts, 12-14 st 30 pts etc. Ask your leader for a copy. 28 pts does seem like a lot to use but you soon find ways! May be saving some and having a meal out once a week?

jasper · 07/06/2002 23:51

Yes Reager, that is the same leaflet I got.
It's not so much I could not eat the whole 28 points ( I did not get this big without being very good at eating)just that sometimes in the evening I am thinking of going to bed and have maybe consumed 20-22 pointsworth of food in the day and am feeling reasonably satisfied with no great desire to eat any more ( stuffed full of vegetables you see!)and wonder if it is best to make the effort to go for the full 28 points by having a sandwich before bed or something. It sort of goes against the dieting grain to eat when I am not particularly hungry.
Other days I could happily munch my way through twice the allowed points!Generally I stick to the 28 as a maximum though.

Haven't read all the posts on this thread, but well done to everyone who has lost weight. Anyone got any tips for keeping motivated to lose last few pounds. I lost my pregnancy weight pretty quick last summer but would really like to shift another few pounds, or ideally a stone to get me down to my ideal weight. I thought yesterday, right today's the day, dh is away so I'm going for it. Flicked through Rosemary Conley's magazine & got really inspired, and started really well, sensible breakfast and lunch, four pints of water, 40 mins of Fat Attack video whilst dd sleeping at lunch-time, was feeling quite smug! By tea-time it started to go horribly wrong, was feeding dd her tea and started to nibble, only a few crackers but that lapse led to me having huge plate of pasta for dinner rather than the carefully calorie counted meal I was planning to have! Didn't help that I bought Patsy Palmer's new video where she says that she lost 2 stone just by exercising and not dieting.....that's it I thought, license to have a glass of wine as well, I'll dance off the calories later.......not a chance, my 9.30 pm was knackered and sloped off to bed to read She magazine with my tummy nicely full!! Have started ok this morning, but can feel a lapse coming on.....how can I stop myself from nibbling?

At my WW meeting we had a tip which seemed quite intriguing, although I haven't tried it out yet. It was to start your '24 hour counting day' later in the actual day - at tea time, or when you come home from work - so that when you hit the evening nibblies you do it with a lot of points in hand, and when you have only a few points left to last you, the stretch to get through is when you are running around being busy. Does that make sense?

Rhiannon · 12/06/2002 15:02

Went to WW this morning, lost 2 more pounds. A total of 10 now, I'm now a size 14 again at last and treated myself to a couple of tops from Per Una. Feeling really pleased with myself. R

Rhiannon · 20/06/2002 08:01

Where's everyone gone?

Have lost 2.5lbs this week making a total of 1 stone and half a pound.

Make up a big salad in a container in the fridge with all your favourites washed and ready to go so you're more likely to put it on your plate.

AliH · 12/07/2002 21:25

Rhiannon, sorry, where does the time go. Just a quick update:

Week 9 and I got to my goal weight (ie minus 10%), so I am now officially a 'Gold member' and so its free from now on. Yippee

I still want to lose about another 1/2 stone, so carrying on. I went back to work three weeks ago, hence I've gone very quiet on Mumsnet.

How is it going? Jasper, how are you doing.

Updates eagerly awaited

jasper · 12/07/2002 23:03

Well done Ali H.
I find the weekly weigh in really keeps me going.
I am actually quite skeptical about some aspects of WWs. We all know you basically have to eat less and move more, however you package it, but I have to hand it to WW they do package it quite well.
However, paying £4.50 each week is massively motivating for me! Also he whole "club" thing, and the fact I get a monday night out each week ( to weightwatchers - how sad is that )
I have lost 13 pounds in 7 (8?) weeks, with another 9 pounds to officially reach my goal weight, which is about a stone too high, unless I am seriously kidding myself.
Most annoying thing about WW is the way they have hijacked the word " Pure"...pure points, pure indulgence etc..what the heck is that all about?

AliH · 12/07/2002 23:10

Jasper, well done, and yes, I agree with everything you said, especially the bit about enjoying the hour out! I guess that I am quite lucky, our 'leader' is really good.

Are you finding it easy to keep to your points. Once I got used to glugging water every time I went into the kitchen, it kind of fell into place. I just hope I can keep it up.

Keep posting, motivation from all sources is vital. The 'gold member' key is pretty naff, but you feel good when you are handed the certificate! Not long now.

jasper · 13/07/2002 03:30

AliH sticking to my points is easyish about 90% of the time ( I am allowed 28 a day due to breastfeeding but try to stick to about 25)but every so often my evil chocolate eating wine drinking crisp munching twin emerges and goes a bit mad for a while. It generally starts on a Friday night with a glass of wine...then another...then another....
How about you?
I too like my leader now I have accustomed myself to her couthy charms.
After my WW meetings I extend my exciting evening out by going to the library for another half hour.

Rhiannon · 13/07/2002 19:11

Well done everyone, didn't go to WW last week, will go this week before I go to Lanzarote. So will be signing off for a week on Wed. R

AliH · 26/07/2002 14:32

Jasper - I've just been away on hols for a week, and put 1/2 lb on at this weeks weigh in (still keeps me 1 1/2 under goal luckily).

My downfall was also wine and crisps whilst away, they are a fatal combination. I had got used to Saturday nights with Snack a Jacks instead of Pringles (I know, no competition but needs must...), but the local store where we were didn't stock the only flavour I like!

I came back feeling a little out of the routine, but need to go back to writing it all down.

Rhiannon, Lanzarote, how nice. Did you stick to the diet, or have a week off. I look forward to progress reports.

jasper · 26/07/2002 20:01

Nice to have you back AliH.
I am in a bit of a rut on the fat front.
Was pretty strict with myself last week and stayed the same. Week before I gained half a pound! So that's a net gain of half a pound for two weeks of denial.AND the library has been closed for the holidays, so Mondays have not been happy for me recently.
On a positive note, I have still lost 13 pounds and lots of people are making nice comments.
And lets face it, the old breastfeeding equipment must weigh about half a stone each side

AliH · 20/08/2002 20:58

WWatchers, where are you, how are you doing.

Jasper, Rhiannon, how is it going.

I've been tonight and the weight loss is slowing down, only 1 to 1 1/2lb per week now. Probably partily due to going back to work, so sitting down three days a week instead of romping round the park/playbarn etc. Also, I've stopped counting and writing it down, so I need to get back on track.

Look forward to progress reports.

WideWebWitch · 20/08/2002 21:06

AliH, I'm not going to ww but I've given up booze (3 weeks so far) and cut down on olive oil and dp reckons I've lost weight...he was walking behind me when he said it so that's a good sign And I think my cheekbones are re-emerging...

OP posts:
Jasper · 21/08/2002 05:32

AliH, nice to "see" you and I have a confession to make ...( in a minute)

If you are losing a pound or slightly more a week that is very good, I am sure that is the best way to keep it off ( and not lose muscle instead of fat)What is your total loss so far ? How much more to go?
I have lost a total of 19 pounds in 13 weeks, and my official goal ( ten stone) is only three pounds away. I feel loads better but think in the long run I need to lose quite a bit more ( maybe another ten ponds)
However I have a bit of an obstacle coming up at the start of September which will render me imobile for a few weeks...I am getting bilateral osteotomy surgery on my feet . Yes, that was the confession , I am alias sorefeet on the bunion surgery thread. Not sure why I adopted an alias for that one. Perhaps my pride did not want anyone to have a mental picture of me as not only fat but with horrible feet ( which is exactly true )
If you have any words of wisdom for me re. the feet surgery I wold be most grateful. I am more than a little nervous that the long term results might not be good or that it relapses as I have been told this can happen.

Jasper · 21/08/2002 05:34

Sory AliH I just reread the thread and see you are officially "at goal" but I presume you just want to lose a few more ponds, am I right?
