Would like to see my toes again! I want to lose weight because...

I don't know if anyone else is trying to lose weight, but I realised recently that there are various things I do differently since I've put on weight, such as:

I half lie, half sit in an undignified sprawl on the bed to get my tights on since it's too uncomfortable to do it from standing and I'd probably overbalance

I roll out of our (very low down) bed in a kind of sideways, crab-like fashion and then get up from being on my knees. This one must be really attractive to watch!

I'm careful about my back all the time since it's slightly painful and I know it's due to the extra weight on my stomach...

I'm not gargantuan but have about 2 stone to lose. Realised today that not having to worry about the above is another incentive to stick at it.

Anyone else want to share their embarrassing reasons for dieting?? And I have no excuse for being overweight, ds is 4 and I'm not pregnant, although it's only a matter of time before someone asks me when it's due

Jasper, If I was you if i thought I'd end up looking like posh if i went to WW I'd not bother! You can eat all those yummy 28 points though, while the rest of us, with one point left at 8.30pm, can go and keep opening cupboards in the kitchen and gazing at the goodies within, then go and have a banana (small!) and go to bed! Try a multi pack of Doritos - one bag 4 points, Quavers 2, french Fries 1 1/2 - all multipack bags. Bread medium slice 1 1/2, teaspoon marg, glass of wine, small of course, 1 point. 40g cheese or triangle of dairylea 1 point. Evening snack sorted. How dull am I that i know all this! Well done Rhiannon and all those who lost this week. My jeans are getting tighter again...

salalex · 23/05/2002 22:13

Salalex, I am happy to reveal....just a bit south of Glasgow, not far from Kilmarnock.
And you?
Well done on your weight loss this week. My first reweigh is next Monday.I am looking forwad to getting my list of points as I am not really following their set menus for week one, but choosing from the foods listed to make up my points.
Thanks for the points ideas in the meantime.
Do you know the points value of the following?
Muller light yogurt
Salt & vinegar crisps
Laughing cow lowfat cheese triangles
Pret a manger chicken and avocado sandwich

jasper · 23/05/2002 22:41

sorry salalex, that should have read well done AliH on the weight loss

salalex · 23/05/2002 23:02

Ha ha Jasper, you do make me laugh. I'm in the fair City of Perth. I go to Glasgow for meetings/ courses now and again. what a fine city it is.
Muller light yogs - un point
Low fat laughing cow triangle - 1/2 point
S & V crisps small bag i.e.multi pack! - 2 1/2. i think a regular bag is 4 pts.
Pret a manger sandwich - my WW calculator has exploded!!
Had a few glasses of red wine - can;'t tyoe straight any more. Auf weidersehen.

jasper · 23/05/2002 23:21

Thanks Salalex.
A few glasses of red wine - that's a few points to be exact.
I do recall the blessed Lynn ( our Leader) saying a whole bottle of wine is 7 1/2 point, in a tut-tut kind of a way as if that was bad.
Meanwhile I was thinking what a swell way to spend those points

By the way are your children caled Sally and Alex? ( ie is that how you chose your nickname)

jasper · 23/05/2002 23:24

For anyone sticking to the WW plan but not losing weight ( Impossible I hear all the disciples cry!) try this link.
Don't know if it's true but makes interesting reading

Jasper, that does make interesting reading, ta. It's true that I have been sticking to the plan and yet not losing yet, the week I had a take away curry and those few glasses of red wine on a Saturday I lost 4lbs.
No, those aren't my girls names, it's to do with a nickname my dad calls me. We used to call wasps jaspers and when we were kids and we saw one we all used to shout jasPAH!!! very loudly. How childish. Looking forward to seeing how you get on on Monday, you old cynic! Although probably not that old, sorry!

jasper · 24/05/2002 12:40

Feeling very old!
Love the wasps story.
The weightwatchers website is quite good.
www.weightwatchers.com (surprisingly)
If you click on WW USA you can read the message boards without all the usual faff of registering with a password you will instantly forget. Not sure if you can post without registering tho'.
A lot of the messages are of the very american "woo hoo way to go girl!!!!!!!" type which I LOATHE but in amongst all that stuff there is some good helpful advice.
On the plateaus thread several people are following the Wendie plan.
In my younger gym days several of the serious fitness bods did a similar diet thing - eating not too much one day, lots the next, medium amount the next etc. The body for life plan (if you have not heard of it check out www.bodyforlife.com) insists on one day a week eating whatever you like.
I am going to visit friends in Newcastle tonight where we always drink lots. V excited.

Azzie · 24/05/2002 18:52

Jasper, according to the WW Eating Out book, a Pret a Manger chicken and avocado sandwich is 9 points.

salalex · 27/05/2002 21:27

Jasper, How did it go? I mean the weigh in as well as your drunken weekend!

jasper · 28/05/2002 00:32

Drunken weekend- great.
Weigh in- a somewhat dissappointing 2 pounds lost - I had hoped for more in the first week. The other first timer lost 6 and a half pounds.
However I find the whole points thing slightly complicated because like many women I already know the calorific value of most foods, so learning the points is a bit like translating everything into French then back into a more rudimentary English.
Also calories are listed on almost every thing you buy these days so it is really easy to track calories but not points. It strikes me the points system was invented to simplify calorie counting - am I right or is there more to it than this? As calorie counting is as easy as breathing to me the points system seems like going a long way for a short cut.
Oh well. How are you doing Salalex?

Thanks for your words of encouragement SueW.
Your comments about the different points system just adds to my skepticism. Every food is fattening to a "given" amount, whether weightwatchers labels it so or otherwise.
I read on an American board a success story from a woman who started WW under the 123 Success programme. ( I am just getting used to their jargon - seems they tweak the prog. every so often so people will return to it who maybe failed last time) soeone at door - will finish later

Ems · 28/05/2002 11:14

Well done on the loss Jasper!

Forget the calories, the points are all to do with the saturated fat in a product.

In a few weeks you will get a great counter, that you put in cals per portion, then the sat fat, and that will give you the points. Great in supermarket and for ready meals. Although you then look at the ready meal and think HOW MUCH!!!??

Forget all your calorie knowledge from before, this point system is really simple and easy, just go with the flow.

Have a really good week. Have you made your no point veg soup yet, thats always a good one.

bells2 · 28/05/2002 16:29

SueW, you have done me a real favour by alerting me to the Pret a Manger web site. I have managed to put on 5lb since returning to work less than 6 weeks ago and a look at the calorific / fat content of Pret's offerings explains why. The fat content is horrendous. I will be trudging to M&S on a daily basis henceforth.

I also managed to take a peek at your photo's at home. Your achievement is amazing - well done!!.

Rhiannon · 28/05/2002 20:10

Weigh-in tomorrow at 10am, am hoping to have stayed the same as haven't been brilliant this week. No chance of dieting whilst camping!

Have noticed that Mother has realised I'm trying to lose weight she has been round with a packet of doughnuts (she hardly ever visits!) and tried to get me to eat treacle tart tonight. Strange woman. R

Rhiannon · 28/05/2002 20:12

For all you WW out there, get some sugar free jelly, make up a few packets put in some raspberries and bananas etc. The jelly is free points and the fruit can go towards your allowance. R

salalex · 30/05/2002 21:49

Jasper, Way to go! 2lbs! Alright girl! Can you guess which web site I'v been on! Seriously, keep going it will work i'm sure. Forget what you know, just do the points thing. Said the woman who can't stop eating. I cannot seem to get in the mood for it. Must try harder, must try harder...

jasper · 31/05/2002 23:38

salalex.stay away from those US websites...
and thanks for your kind words!
Rhiannon, you have not posted your weekly weigh in!
Part 2 of my story from 2 days ago ( my internet connection is currently hopeless to add to the general chaos)
The american woman in the WW success story said she was "devestated" when WW rejigged their diet and cups of carrot sticks(sic) were no longer "free". She had been successfully losing weight and eating several cups of carrot sticks a day and as far as she saw it, was no longer " allowed " to do this.
How stupid is this? Do weightwatchers decree how fattening or otherwise a particular food is?
A bit like the olive oil being "pointed" differently in Australia.
Anyway, enough moaning. I can totally how the WW plan is designed to make you wolf down massive quantities of vegetables ( I am thinking of growing my own I am getting through so many) so you dont get hungry and presumeablty eat lots of good stuff and feel generally better as well as slimming down.

Rhiannon · 06/06/2002 10:06

Hi Jasper, didn't go this week due to various pig-outs over the w/e! Back on it now though, will report back. I was 13 stone dead last week and hope to see 12 something next week. R

leander · 06/06/2002 13:06

I've finally decided to bite the bullett and join WW.I kept imagining that i would be one of those annoying girls that go to a size 10 weeks after giving birth but its not to be. I'm a size 16 and about 11 1/2 stone, Ds is 5 mo so its about time i stopped the "I've just had a baby" excuse,so Dh got the rowing machine out of the garage and i'm joing WW tonight.I'm hoping to lose about 2 1/2 stone!!
