Would like to see my toes again! I want to lose weight because...

I don't know if anyone else is trying to lose weight, but I realised recently that there are various things I do differently since I've put on weight, such as:

I half lie, half sit in an undignified sprawl on the bed to get my tights on since it's too uncomfortable to do it from standing and I'd probably overbalance

I roll out of our (very low down) bed in a kind of sideways, crab-like fashion and then get up from being on my knees. This one must be really attractive to watch!

I'm careful about my back all the time since it's slightly painful and I know it's due to the extra weight on my stomach...

I'm not gargantuan but have about 2 stone to lose. Realised today that not having to worry about the above is another incentive to stick at it.

Anyone else want to share their embarrassing reasons for dieting?? And I have no excuse for being overweight, ds is 4 and I'm not pregnant, although it's only a matter of time before someone asks me when it's due

Salalex, it's confession time - I signed up last night!
I was quite nervous going in ( not like me at all) not because I am nervous of new people but because it was such a public acnowledgement of being fat!
As someone has already said, there is no magic to losing weight - eat less and move more, but if following some sort of plan makes the job easier then what the heck.
The meeting was slightly chaotic and amateurish but I didn't mind and quite enjoyed it.
The leader was extremely pleasant but slightly clueless and did not explain anything. I did not want to ask questions which would make me seem like a skeptic or a troublemaker!
Despite the fact I had brought my baby she did not mention breastfeeding till I actually put baby on the breast.
I am still skeptical of the points system - I have no doubt it "works" but feel it is an attempt by WW to slightly bamboozle us poor fatties and make us buy more of their "pointed" foods.( what a lovely mental picture that conjures up)
If I succeed with losing my excess baggage with the help of WW I am sure it will be down to the weekly weigh in, the group cameraderie, and the fact I am parting with £4.50 each week.

Jasper · 21/05/2002 21:18

AliH, how was the weigh in?
Rhiannon, don't think I have forgotten about you...will be asking you the same question tomorrow

salalex · 21/05/2002 21:23

Hi Jasper,Ha, ha, you fessed up!
It is easy - well for suckers like me! - to get sucked into to the buying things cos they've got points already calculated on them but I think you can do it perfectly well without all their branded stuff. i do dislike the thought that they have caught me in their web and I may become a clone of WW by buying all thier own bars etc and looking for their stuff in the supermarket. Having read what people have said earlier on this thread about high sugar content, I looked at WWs own stuff - fantastically high in sugar! Worth avoiding i reckon. You can easily adapt the stuff you like best, without buying loads of their crap. I think that i often eat better when I am following their stuff as the veg is free and fruit is low in points. Next week you get book 2 with the pints values of all the foods in - bet you're excited now! Good luck, keep posting.

salalex · 21/05/2002 21:24

And I meant to add, you can ask the mumsnet WW help line all your sceptical troublemaking questions!!

Jasper · 21/05/2002 21:42

Thanks salalex, and here is my next troublemaker question...
At our class you cant see the scale weight, only the leader can.
Is this standard?
Do you think she adds a couple of pounds on the initial weigh in to a) horrify you and b) make you think, when she tells you your true weight on week 2 you have done really well on week one?

Also ,in week one you follow the set menus totalling 18 points...in week 2 do you get more points? Less points? Different coloured or more pointy points?

salalex · 21/05/2002 21:50

LOL Jasper, what could a more pointy point be? Cornettos?! I think you will get more points in week 2/3 depending on how much you weigh. I can see the scales at my weigh in, and have been wherever I've been to WW - they shouldn't add any on!! I have to stick at 18 as I am under 12 stone (only just). Make sure you eat all your points though! Like you need me to tell you that, but some people try to live on 10 and it does them no good! I must admit I'm fed up with the meetings so I rarely stay, but they can be good to keep you on track in the early days. Make mine a Korma coloured point!

Yes Sue!! Show us the photos!
Salalex i cant wait to be given my dictionary of points next week as this week I am following the set menus ...NOT! But I am eating in the spirit of the meal plans, honest.
My breastfeeders allowance is a whopping 28 points but without the holy grail of points values I dont know what I can have with the 8 I have left today - I dont really want to go and eat my dinner all over again. Or have 32 satsumas.
Please reassure me I can eat 28 points a day and still end up like Posh spice, only poorer and with a less athletic husband.

Mind you Our Leader did say a whole bottle of wine is 7 and a half points....

pupuce · 22/05/2002 09:32

SueW - Impressive - well done and in 5 months too....

Tillysmummy · 22/05/2002 09:47

Jasper, you make me laugh! Stop being so suspicious of it all, it works, and they're not out to get you, (just the £4.50) and the rest if totally and utterly up to you!!

You will probably stick at the points given which is either the 18 or 20 depending on your weight (or the extra points coz of breastfeeding). Try and eat them all, if you have a big meal coming up, eg party or something on a Sat night, you can save perhaps 2 a day and add them to the Saturday and have a blow out!

It will help when you get the food points book, you dont need to eat WW food, I only bought the WW frozen meals, chick hot pot etc, 5 points a pack for when hubby was away. And the toffee yogs to satisfy a very sweet tooth.

Snack a Jacks are fantastic for a sweet tooth by the way, and lots of WW people live on them!

You'll also discover how exercise 'buys' you more points, which is great for speeding it all along or saving more points for a bottle of wine or creme egg.

At my WW you can see your weight, the little box is on the table and you can read it upside down as the leader is writing it down. How come you cant see yours? GOOD LUCK AND GO FOR IT!

Their magazine is great for inspiration, amazing photos like SUES! and lots of money off food coupons, yogurts etc.

Jasper · 22/05/2002 14:49

Okay Ems, I promose to be less suspicious!
I have trawled the WW website ( oh no, another website for me to spend hours on)and it seems the points system is skewed to kind of guide/force you into eating lots of healthy stuff because if you go for junk you only get to eat mouse quantities of food per day. Its kind of a trick but it obviously works, helping to educate your palate etc.
I'm begining to talk like a weightwatcher

Rhiannon · 22/05/2002 15:01

I lost 1.5lb today, so that's 9lb in 3 weeks, I'm really pleased but I'm still trying to get out of the over eating cycle, my teeth just want to munch all day. I'm now stocked up on WW sweets and those 1 point toffee and banana bars. Todays meeting cost £12.95 with £38 in M & S after (but £6 was on flowers for me for being so good). R

peanut · 22/05/2002 15:50

I don't know about anyone else but iam truely sick of dieting, I have now lost 39lbs since the beginning of December (dd is nearly 8 months) and i still have a good 2 stone to lose before i get to my previous weight, unfortunately i got pregnant over the xmas period and had put on a good stone due to over indulgance right before i fell. I am going on holiday in 3 weeks and feel evry thing looks awful on me, not helped by the fact i have a huge saggy tummy because i had a c-section and no amount of weight loss seems to make it any better. I am beginning to feel very obsessive about the diet which i hate because then i don't even enjoy the food i do eat incase it makes me not lose weight or worse put it on. I am being very sensible and following a balanced diet and getting on my exercise bike 4 times a week for at least 10 mins at a time but im starting to think i will never get back to the way i was. Any way enough of my ranting.

Copper · 22/05/2002 16:01

Does anybody else find that WW scales weigh heavier than home scales? I've weighed myself immediately after walking back (5 minutes!)from WW last night, to find a 2lb difference. And altogether I've lost 8lb on my scales and only 4lb on theirs! Very annoying...

Ems · 22/05/2002 18:29

Copper, throw out the home scales - seriously!! - and from now on only go by WW each week.

Otherwise you end up all over the place.

WideWebWitch · 22/05/2002 18:36

Copper, if your scales say you've lost 8lb, then you've lost 8lb since you are comparing to our previous weight on those scales. Or am I being thick here?

OP posts:
Twink · 22/05/2002 18:50

Peanut, that is really good going but I really sympathise about being fed up with dieting, I've just reached 'maintenance' after 18 months of it...
Are you doing WW or something else ?
I know it's difficult to fit in exercise but as you're already doing some perahps you could increase your time to 15 mins or increase the intensity.
Loads of us mumsnetters have the same problem with tummies, look here to find a thread with loads of groans and some solutions to our kangeroo pouches.
I'm no good at the psychological stuff but try to focus on what you've achieved so far and not on '2 stone to go', break it down and try to lose maybe half a stone every 4-6 weeks instead.
Hang in there, and tell yourself you WILL do it.

Jasper · 22/05/2002 21:32

Peanut I know just what you mean. When you are dieting your whole attitude to food changes. You cant just enjoy it. You worry about eating too much or even eating too little and slowing down your metabolism.
You worry about the possibility of NOT actually losing weight despite all your efforts....Then you feel fed up because you are still fat and cant even cheer yourself up with a big pile of chocolate and a couple of bottles of wine...

peanut · 23/05/2002 12:57

Thank you Twink & Jasper for the encouragement, tomorrow is weighing day so I will see if this weeks torture has been worth it. I don't go to weight watchers or anything i just could never see the point in paying someone else almost £5 a go to weigh me when i can do it for free myself (just stingy I guess). I will just have to keep my fingers crossed and count my blessings that there are no more eating holidays (ie christmas, birthday, easter) to get through for a while.

AliH · 23/05/2002 14:46

Feeling better this week (only 1/2 off last week, time of the month), but managed 31/2 this week. Doesn't it make you feel great when you lose each week?

Suew - WOW you are an inspiration, how much did you lose in total so far?

Rhiannan - well done, you are doing really well, especially for someone with a self confessed sweet tooth. I discovered M&S summer fruit compote yesterday. Yummy, and no saturated fat. Great with natural yoghurt, in smoothies, and I have a confession to make. I had a friend over last night, who is also dieting, who is also a chocaholic. I made her WW chocolate mousse (from their new 5 points and under cookbook) and served it with the summer fruit compote and fresh raspberries, very yummy and not too indulgent on the points either.

Has anyone else found anything good? Keep posting, all support welcomed. 10lbs in total now, and looking forward to goal in 8 lbs time.
