...and it really bloody hurts , I can hardly swallow. And I have got aches and little stabbing pains all over, and I look like a hamster because my glands are all swollen, and my skin feel like one giant bruise all over. AND a a new cold sore. I have caught a virus from ds1, who has had it for over a week now, and has a burst eardrum.

Just wanted to whinge and moan, really

{{{{{hugs}}}}}} that sounds awful

Hope you feel better soon. You on any anti bs?

Elibean · 23/09/2006 15:10

OMG, you poor love. I once landed up in hospital with a throat infection (unable to eat or drink for over a week, just got too dehydrated) and a nurse told me that throat pain is considered one of the worst sorts of pain. So you are allowed to whinge and moan as much as you need to, big time.
Also wondered if you were on anti-bs, sounds like you might need them.
Are you able to drink?

Mercy · 23/09/2006 15:10

That sounds awful Greensleeves, poor you.

I am getting concerned because I keep seeing you on the health section. Spacecadet is around atm, she may be able to help.

Greensleeves · 23/09/2006 15:11

lockets, my heart always sinks when one of the kids gets a virus, I always catch it.

Am not on antibiotics (although ds1 is), will have to wait until Monday to see GP...have got lots of throat lozenges and vicks chloroseptic, but they are not helping much, it feels as though my throat is full of razor blades

Remembered....one of the things I didnt' know when I had my infection, was that if you can't swallow or eat anything for long enough, you are at risk of oral thrush, because the act of chewing and swallowing food normally 'cleans out' your mouth and throat.
I was immune compromised at the time, so of course I got it - and it added to the pain. But I think its a possibility for anyone - in which case some sort of mouthwash like Diflam might be a good idea??

Greensleeves · 23/09/2006 15:14

Oh, no, thrush on top of this sounds awful - will get dh to buy me some antiseptic mouthwash. Thanks

Ulysees · 23/09/2006 15:15

have you done the salt gargle? Hope you get ant bs soon. Don't you have a walk in place you could get them from? We have one or they're sometimes in hospitals. Sounds like you warrant this IMO.

3littlefrogs · 23/09/2006 15:16

oraldine mouthwash is antiseptic and antifungal. I found it really good when i had a strep. throat years ago. Also, sucking ice cubes can be soothing and help to avoid dehydration. It sounds awful - I do hope you feel better soon.

Mercy · 23/09/2006 15:16

Some people find gargling with soluble paracetemol helps a sore throat, or even a salt solution.

Greensleeves · 23/09/2006 15:17

Yes, there's a walk in centre at the hospital, but we don't have a car, and I am all dizzy nad pathetic - don't think I could face it

Have got salt though, but won't it hurt like hell?

OP posts:
Elibean · 23/09/2006 15:20

Do - thrush felt just like razor blades, as you describe. But then, so can any throat infection - and mine was viral tooso sadly no anti-bs to speed up healing!
I think Diflam has an anaesthetic component to dull pain, but can't honestly remember too well...probably blanked out the memory
Hope you can put your feet up and rest, and try and drink/eat if you can bear to - I know it goes against every instinct, but it keeps throat healthier if you can (not to mention the rest of you). Hope you feel better soon, xxx

Elibean · 23/09/2006 15:21

Oh yes - and the best relief I got was from gargling, had forgotten that: soluble aspirin, it reduces inflammation (therefore better than paracetamol) but do spit most or all of it out when done or you'll end up on aspirin overload!

Elibean · 23/09/2006 15:23

Sorry to go on and on, but: if you're NOT drinking much, be careful - you might be dehydrating, even if you do'nt feel thirsty, and the dizziness could be partly that. Have to admit you do sound doctor-worthy...

Oh, thank you so much for listening to my moaning (dh and kids have gone out and left me)

Am forcing myself to drink water now

OP posts:
Ulysees · 23/09/2006 15:32

can you get a taxi?

Greensleeves · 23/09/2006 15:36

I could... I might, if it doesn't start improving soon. I took ds1 there in a taxi in the middle of the night with blood and pus (tmi ) pouring out of his ear, and they just told me to take him home and give him calpol. I had to ask our GP to prescribe antibiotics for him yesterday (he is getting better quite quickly now, thank goodness). I might go this evening if it's still this bad, though.

Elibean · 23/09/2006 15:49

Go, Greensleeves....your ds had a lovely mummy to make sure he got the treatment he needed, you, poor thing, only have us MN lot booting you out the door
Make sure you tell them if you are having trouble drinking - I left it several days, and the GP took one look at me, pinched the skin on hte back of my hand, and picked up the telephone to get me admitted. Not worth waiting!

Elibean · 23/09/2006 15:50

that they didn't give your ds antibiotics first time though (only just absorbed that bit), thought pus would be a fairly clear indicator!

hazelnuts · 23/09/2006 16:23

Poor Greensleeves and DS1. You need to get the out of hours GP to see you now. They will come out if you really push them. They know you cant get to your GP as its the weekend. Were as your DS1 could. (they dont like the paper work and its there cost and not your GP`s.) Yes its down to money. Get on that phone, or get DH to phone them. Tomorrow is no good. You dont want your DC to have to see your get rushed in to hospital. So please get something done now! Hugs to you. Hazel xx

Rumpel · 23/09/2006 17:20

Greensleeves - sounds like tonsillitis to me. Aching pains all over your body, swollen glands and white/yellow lumpy bits in the sides of your throat (inside). Feverish as well? I used to get it all the time - it is truly awful. Best thing to do is to gargle with soluble aspirin or codis ( I know your not supposed to take aspirin whilst pg but if you are only gargling and spitting it out it should be okay - or use codis). These are both anit-inflammatory and will ease the swelling and pain. It defo works. Also take a face towel and put in cold water and keep applying to your neck/gland area - this should ease the discomfort a bit.

Poor you sending you healing vibes!xx

Greensleeves · 23/09/2006 19:12

I think it is tonsillitis, it sounds exactly like your description. I think I will go to the walk-in centre tomorrow if I don't feel better. Thankfully ds1 is now more or less back to normal, so there is hope for me!

OP posts:
Elibean · 23/09/2006 19:28

I seem to remember always getting antibiotics for tonsillitis as a kid...
Glad to hear ds is ok again, and hope you get some kip tonight!

Alibaldi · 23/09/2006 20:06

Definitely sounds just like the Strep throat that I'm on penicillin for at the moment. Yucky throat, couldn't swallow aches and pains. I would go to the walk in clinic for ab's start working very quickly and you could even start to feel more human by tomorrow. It's hell on earth and I sympathise. I'm on day 3 of a 10 day prescription. But at least my fever and aches have gone away. Sending you a big hug from Colorado
