...and it really bloody hurts , I can hardly swallow. And I have got aches and little stabbing pains all over, and I look like a hamster because my glands are all swollen, and my skin feel like one giant bruise all over. AND a a new cold sore. I have caught a virus from ds1, who has had it for over a week now, and has a burst eardrum.

Just wanted to whinge and moan, really

Yes sounds like tonsilitis to me too.. may need antibiotics before Monday.. tonsilitis can occasionally lead to hospitalisation in adults if left too long

Greensleeves · 23/09/2006 22:56

This is ARSE . I have got stabbing painsin my ear, and I can't sleep, and I am starving but daren't swallow anything because my throat is so sore

Please keep an eye on it as the pustules etc on your throat are a bit worryig - you could develop a Quinsy, or Tonsillar abcess. I had 2 as a child before I had my tonsils out. Sounds liek you shoud see a doc asap to be honest - phone NHS 24 (or NHS direct in England). Hope you feel better soon.

puff · 23/09/2006 23:03

Greeny - is it feasible for you to get to A&E (I know it's an arse), but your description sounds grim and reminiscent of when I had quinsy (about 23 years ago!!). It was hellish - My Dad got me to the gp on Monday morning and he told me I should have gone to A&E and asked how the hell I had ended up in that state, but how are we supposed to know, when we are not Doctors?

puff · 23/09/2006 23:17

I was 18 btw, so not a child, hence the surprise at getting a telling off. had to be admitted to hospital to have pus drained from throat and IV antibiotics - bleugh

suedonim · 23/09/2006 23:30

I've had strep throat a few times, GS, with similar symptoms as yours. This is quite informative about strep infections You do need to see someone because on rare occasions a strep throat can lead to rheumatic fever or kidney problems. Hope you feel better soon.

hunkermunker · 23/09/2006 23:34

Oh, sweetheart

I had tonsillitis very badly as a child - my throat nearly closed over. The doctor took one look down my throat and retched and turned away

Would sucking ice cubes help? Possibly not, but maybe?

How about giving NHS Direct a call?

GreenLumpyTonsils · 23/09/2006 23:43

Oh, god, it is become increasingly obvious that I am going to HAVE to go to the walk in centre tomorrow I am meeting another MNer at the weekend in London, and I am damn well not missing it, even if I have to turn up sounding like Darth Vadar

The worst thing is, I am bloddy STARVING, but I can't stand the thought of swallowing anything

Cassoulet · 24/09/2006 00:52

Please go to the hospital/walkin centre, whatever you have near you. I had a quinsey too and it is utterly frightful. If you're having trouble swallowing it's an indication that you need treatment asap.

Do you have any sage? You can make an 'infusion' of it, gargle it and then drink it. It's v good for throats; but don't do it to replace proper medical treatment, just do it until you can get to an NHS place.

Elibean · 24/09/2006 08:40

How are you today, Green one? The night sounded horrid, imagine you're exhausted as well as starving. Hopefully, you're not here at all because you're at the drop in centre or on your way there...hope the wait is short and the staff sympathetic and helpful.

GreenLumpyTonsils · 24/09/2006 10:35

Thanks for asking Elibean, I am still at death's door, haven't slept at all - but am waiting for a taxi to the walk-in centre, so hopefully will be on the mend soon. I had trouble walking to the bathroom this morning, I am so drained and dizzy, so it should be an interesting trip. I've got to go on my own because we don't have car seats for the boys (no car), and it's going to cost me about £15 for the taxi fare, so I hope they give me the antibiotics.

foundintranslation · 24/09/2006 10:51

oh greeny, only just seen this, sorry you're ill.

GreenLumpyTonsils · 24/09/2006 12:20

Have just got back from walk-in centre, clutching my prescription for antibiotics. The doctor said he had never seen such an angry-looking throat infection

I hope the darn things work quickly, I still can't even drink water without nearly screaming in pain.

GreenLumpyTonsils · 24/09/2006 12:28

oh no, have got to rise from my sickbed and show willing at the table for Sunday lunch I would rather drink battery acid than eat a roast dinner but the kids will be upset if I am not there

GreenLT, are you sure you cannot stay in bed?? Surely your kids will understand, and dp can explain mummy is poorly??

What is the point in trying to eat dinner if it is going to hurt so much?? Surely that would upset the children too??

Grab a good book, (or MN on a laptop) and get into bed you!!

GreenLumpyTonsils · 24/09/2006 13:00

Nah, am going to make the effort and have a prophylactic quantity of lunch - dh has spent all morning cooking it, and my brother is going back to London this afternoon

I intend to spend the entire afternoon under a duvet on the sofa watching "Legally Blonde" and other trash

MN is so great - it's like having a huge group of friends who are there when you need them. I felt so dejected yesterday when I started this thread, it has really cheered me up

Elibean · 24/09/2006 15:43

I am SO glad you went, SO glad they coughed up with the anti-bs, and very impressed at the prophylactic lunch.
Have a feeling you will be feeling better soon, but do take it easy - no wait, better still, milk it for all you possibly can for as long as possible
Seriously though, I only just got in and saw your earlier post, but how you were feeling this morning was how I was when I got sent to hospital for rehydration - exactly - so £15 well spent.
Enjoy the TV, hope the pills go down more easily by bedtime...

GreenLumpyTonsils · 24/09/2006 16:10

Thank you very much Elibean, you are lovely

I feel a bit better actually, I am very glad I went and got the antibiotics.

Elibean · 24/09/2006 17:22

Shhh, don't tell 'em you're feeling better yet...

hunkermunker · 24/09/2006 18:20

Glad you're on the mend, Greeny x x x

Northerner · 24/09/2006 18:25

Greeny this sounds awful. Poor you. I had a severe case of tonsilitis once that turned into quincy. I ended up in hospital on a drip as I was so dehydrated I could not swallow even a sip of water. The first night in hospital was hell, I was in agony, weak nd dizzy and could not sleep.

Think I'd rather give birth again tbh! Hope you get better soon.

GreenLumpyTonsils · 24/09/2006 23:19

Am feeling worse than ever , have got stabbing pains ALL over me, and throat is now so rigid (more green bit have appeared too) I can't even talk, breathing hurts . These flaming antibiotics had better work soon

I forced a bit of water down earlier but it was so painful I wimped out , I will have a go at drinking some more nad try and gargle some paracetamol - I can't end up in hospital, it's ds1's birthday on Friday and we are supposed to be going away for the weekend
