Fed up. Drinking far too much on pretty much a nightly basis. Inspired by Dinny's thread last night I've decided to take a one day at a time approach to cutting right back/stopping. I'm posting this because I decide this pretty much every morning but usually give in later in the day - but if I've made some kind of public committment then I have a better chance of sticking at it.

If anyone else would like to join me in not drinking today, that would be lovely.

Hi everyone, how's it going. Had a few wines last night as predicted and irish coffee after meal which was yummyscrummy. Paced myself so no hangover pleased to say. No drink for me today. Enjoy your night out Zippy. Are you being good this weekend dinny?

ParanoidA you're doing great. Berrie must be home from hols soon too.

dinny · 24/09/2006 07:52

Hi, Moomoo, well, I had 3 Smirnoff Ices last night and feel fine today. sure wine is a baddie in terms of hangover!

not drinking tonight though.

Zippy, how are you?

Berrie · 24/09/2006 08:38

Hello everyone! Glad to see you are all still here (also glad to see you fell off the wagon occasionally like me! Now my hoilday is over I reslove to not drink, not eat chocolate thereby loosing lots of weight before my brothers wedding in 3 weeks time - to also keep my house clean and my children worthily entertained (ie no cbeebies)...again!

dinny · 24/09/2006 11:21

hello, Berrie

did you have a good holiday? x

Berrie · 24/09/2006 11:35

It was absolutly glorious thankyou! Our best family holiday yet now that ds is a bit bigger! lots of beach fun!

zippy539 · 24/09/2006 11:49

Morning all!

Hi Berrie - nice to have you back. The holiday sounds fab - where were you?

Well, had a lovely night last night and NO hangover today. Dinny - you are right, wine is the devil's work. I had two (large) gins at my Mum's (where we were staying the night) and felt totally plastered - I don't think I would have even registered on the pissed scale after 2 gins pre-cutting down. Then we went out with my brother and his gf for a meal and I drank lager (had sobered up a bit by then ). I tried to stick to bottles cause they seem to take me longer to drink, but still reckon I must have put away around three pints in total over the evening. Fell into bed at 1.30am feeling pleasantly in control of myself and woke up at eight (thanks Mum and Dad) feeling positively hydrated.

Anyway, back on the wagon again this morning. I'm really going to try sticking to this 'no drinking in the house' thing. So, I'm not going to drink today.

We went to Cornwall. We were so lucky with the weather and, as we hadn't been back since having children, it was really nice revisiting favourite places it is sooo beautiful!
Slept really really badly though and can't decide whether it was because I was drinking or the strange bed. Looking forward to being good again though.
Thanks for asking!

dinny · 24/09/2006 19:53

where in Cornwall, Berrie? (I'm from the Isles of Scilly, know Cornwall v well)

Zippy - well done for sticking to the grain! I have had a Pimms this afternoon with a friend and may have a lager in a mo (agree about bottles lasting longer! love Miller, mmmm.

dinny · 24/09/2006 19:55

OMG, was just looking up how many units in a measure of Pimms and LOOK at this (it'll put you off wine for good!)

from website giving alcohol units for various drinks...

Wine: Look at % ABV, then if ?

8% ABV, 6 units in a 75 cl bottle

9% ABV, 7 units in a 75 cl bottle

10% ABV, 7.5 units in a 75 cl bottle

11% ABV, 8 units in a 75 cl bottle

12% ABV, 9 units in a 75 cl bottle

13% ABV, 10 units in a 75 cl bottle

14% ABV, 10.5 units in a 75 cl bottle

scary scary scary

Berrie · 25/09/2006 08:08

Dinny, lucky lucky you! Are you there now or just from there, I would love to go! Where would you reccomend if we could ever afford the helicopter?
We were based near Gorran Haven on the Roseland Peninsula but our real love is around Sennen. We love it so much we made everyone go down there for our wedding! We managed to get down there for a day - the colours are spectacular - we love it! I'm gushing now! I've always wondered this and you'll perhaps be able to tell me, do you get used to it and begin to take it for granted?

dinny · 25/09/2006 08:23

Berrie, no, in Surrey now but born and brought up there, left to go to mainland to do A-levels. Mum and Dad still there, run business loads of family as related to nearly eveyone (in-bred!)
I want to move back, dh not so keen so we'll prob compromise on Cornwall (prob just outside Truro) - not sure when though! for now, we just go home a lot-kids adore it (unsuprisingly!)

know Sennen well - so beautiful.

re Scilly - get the boat, much cheaper
if I could stay anywhere I'd stay at St Martin's Hotel but it's pricey... Otherwise I'll have to be loyal and say stay on St Mary's (do self-catering).

ended up having 2 Pimms yesterday, still did enjoy them! how did you do? x

Berrie · 25/09/2006 09:07

Oh dear, 1/2 bottle of homemade elderberry raisin and malt followed by a can of stella. Then tried to do the ironing for today. Looked at Dh in his shirt shirt at 6.30 this morning as he was about to leave but decided to say nothing and hope he doesn't notice. It'll iron on won't it?
I get very seasick on boats, how long is the crossing?
Not drinking tonight...

zippy539 · 25/09/2006 09:25

berrie - psml re the ironing.

dinnie - thanks for posting the unit thing. OMG is all I can say...

Definitely not drinking today. Anyone else?

Never worry, sure I had a few last night! Think about it tomorrow instead.

dinny · 25/09/2006 22:04

what was the response to your smoking one, Naswm?

zippy539 · 26/09/2006 09:25

Morning all. Had a lovely sober evening in front of Britain's Next Top Model.

Welcome back naswn - where's your smoking thread? I should be checking it out. My 'occasional' fag habit has escalated alarmingly since I've cut out the drinking.

Anyway, here we go again. I'm not drinking today, anyone else?

OP posts:
naswm · 26/09/2006 09:39

failed last night. Feeling remarkably yuck this morning considering I didnt drink that much. But the depressive effects of alcohol and not enough sleep have kicked in so I am feeling less than jolly this morning

AllieM · 26/09/2006 09:46

Hi all,

Just cruising through recent threads (afraid I'm a bit of an occasional visitor although I love this site) and wanted to say that you're all inspirational - you've done so well and the support you give each other is amazing. That teatime "oh I'll just have a glass" temptation is a killer.

I'll join you tonight Zippy!
