I don't want to drink today. Anyone else?

Fed up. Drinking far too much on pretty much a nightly basis. Inspired by Dinny's thread last night I've decided to take a one day at a time approach to cutting right back/stopping. I'm posting this because I decide this pretty much every morning but usually give in later in the day - but if I've made some kind of public committment then I have a better chance of sticking at it.

If anyone else would like to join me in not drinking today, that would be lovely.

Blimey - still feeling chronic here. Are hangovers worse when you've cut down?

Dinny - I'm feeling like you did the other day when you were wondering whether it was worth it. I don't reckon it is - today has been a total write off and all for the sake of a bottle of blooming wine!

Know the feeling zippy, felt like s*e all day saturday!! Consoled myself that at least it had been "proper night with friends round hangover" rather than "slobbing out in front of tv, omg did i really manage to finish off that whole bottle" one. But i'm sure i'll have forgotten how ropey i was feeling when it comes to next fri night and i'm trotting off again to wine shop, or "mummy's shop" as my dd calls it...

Hope you better soon x

dinny · 18/09/2006 19:53

hi, everyone.

Zippy, it is hideous, isn't it? makes you realise what a toxin is and that when you're drinking regularly like we used to, you are just constantly trying to make yurself feel less crap but it's a vicious circle! bleurgh! seriously, is it worth drinking? did you enjoy it when you were actually drinking? have to say, I did but am determined booze is at most going to be 2/7 nights a week for me!

so , am not drinking tonight either!

zippy539 · 19/09/2006 09:10

Morning all. Feeling much, much better today.

Dinny - it is a bit shocking about the toxins etc isn't it? I can't believe I felt so awful just because of one bottle, when before I was easily drinking a bottle a night. . Was it worth it? I think the best moment was actually opening the bottle and having the first few sips (or gulps ). I didn't spend the whole night thinking 'mmmmmmm this is fab' - as I thought I would. I read something about compulsive shoppers recently and the psychologist was saying that the 'high' they get comes on in the split second when they take the decision to buy and only actually lasts a few moments. By the time they get to the till he high has already gone. I've got a feeling I'm a bit like that with drinking. I look forward to that moment of saying 'oh sod it, let's open a bottle' but once I'm actually up and running, I wonder just how much I actively enjoy it (or even notice that I'm doing it). Even if I do, I'm not sure it was worth the God awful hangover I had all day yesterday.

Anyway, I'm definitely not drinking today. Anyone else?

Hi all - sorry, I've been frantic and not really checking into MN at all! Didn't drink on Friday, and only had one glass of red on Saturday night.

I'm not drinking tonight either!

Berrie - are you there? how are you doing?

moomooland · 19/09/2006 13:48

No drink for me tonight

moomooland · 19/09/2006 13:52

Well done ParanoidA for being so good at weekend

dinny · 19/09/2006 14:37

nope, not drinking tonight, yoga night - huzzah, really looking forward.

zippy539 · 19/09/2006 17:51

Enjoy your yoga, Dinny. Must drag myself off my fat arse and do some exercise. Probably have to start another thread to motivate myself though. Might call it 'I don't want to exercise today. Anyone else?'

Morning all. Here we go again.

I'm not drinking today. Anyone else?

Hi all, ready to make my morning declaration too - i'm not drinking tonight

dinny · 20/09/2006 14:30

hello, I may have a Pimms later this afternoon as have folks round after school and the sun is shining... (any excuse!) but I will have two max and am definitely steering clear of any alcohol this evening, am starting to think wine is the devil's work, lol

moomooland · 20/09/2006 14:53

Mmmm...pimms

zippy539 · 20/09/2006 15:42

Crickey Dinny - where do you live? It's blowing a gale here. Or is any weather Pimms weather?

With you on the wine thing - it IS the devil's work. I'm going out on Saturday night and will be sticking to that famous non-alcoholic drink, lager.

OP posts:
dinny · 20/09/2006 17:48

we're in Surrey, Zippy - and it is v breezy but sunny. My Mum and Dad are off Cornwall and being blown around by Gordon!

well, had a Pimms - was nice but feel bit pissed now so hving coffee!

think will drink Smirnoff Ice if I go out...ever

moomooland · 20/09/2006 21:32

Oh no, have just poured glass of wine just couldn't resist tonight, sorry guys. Will only have the one (i think!). Weather atrocious here too, maybe I can blame that ...? Promise will try harder tomorrow cos this could be a slippery slope.

zippy539 · 21/09/2006 09:18

Morning all. Was it a slippery slope, moo moo?

Must have been something in the air last night but I was gasping for a drink ALL last night. Was only saved by the fact we didn't have anything in.

Right. Here we go again. I'm not going to drink today. Anyone else?

zippy539 · 21/09/2006 09:23

Meant to say, I'm very chuffed I didn't give in last night cause, despite eating like a horse, I've lost 6lbs.

OP posts:
dinny · 21/09/2006 11:57

wow, great stuff, Zippy

I'm not drinking tonight either (am at work late anyhow)

moomooland · 21/09/2006 12:11

Hi Zippy and Dinny. Pleased to say I just had two glasses in the end - could have been a lot worse! Just couldn't resist nice chilled bottle of sauvignon in fridge, ah well. Impressive weight loss Zippy - that information alone has spurred me on. Really need to get back into regular running/swimming again now that the wine habit is under control so that I can ditch a few pounds.

I'll def be joining you both in declaration as have school meeting this evening so ... "I'm not drinking tonight" x

ParanoidAndroid · 21/09/2006 12:22

Well done on the weight loss Zippy. I reckon that alcohol contributes a lot to my inability to lose weight. When I was in the Priory for depression, I lost almost a stone and that was on three cooked meals a day - I think partly because of portion control, but also because there was no booze (obviously). but now I'm seriously exercising again, and not drinking, I hope the weight will fall off

I didn't drink last night, in fact I haven't drunk all week. It's a beautiful day here and a friend has just asked if I want to go the pub for lunch - I could do with sitting in the garden with a glass of wine, but I've said no - I've too much housework to do (how sad is that?!)

I'm not drinking today either.

dinny · 22/09/2006 12:30

hmmmm, can't decide whether to drink tonight or not...........

how's everyone?

moomooland · 22/09/2006 16:04

Hi dinny We're going out for dinner tonight (babysitter for once, hurray!)so will be having some vino for sure but will try not to go too mad. Hoping not to have anymore rest of weekend (which will likely be helped on by tomorrow's hangover if last sat anything to go by!)

dinny · 22/09/2006 18:04

have a lovely evening, moomoo

zippy539 · 22/09/2006 20:05

Couldn't get on line for a lot of the day so missed making my declaration. As a result very nearly popped into a bar this afternoon on the pre-text of getting something to eat but thinking I could knock back a sneaky glass of wine while I was at it. God knows how but I managed to resist so can say that I didn't have a drink today. Hoorahhhh! Can have loads of guilt free lagers when I go out tomorrow night.

The weight loss is a bit bizarre because I have been eating loads, and mainly crap. But I reckon there must be about 750 cals (at least) in a bottle of wine, so multiply that by six/seven nights a week... Eek. Dh hasn't been drinking in the house either and he's looks like he's lost a good few pounds as well. It makes me even more determined to keep it up.

Hope you're having a good time moo-moo!
