Welcome to thread 8 (again - see below) of a long-running series of posts from ladies suffering from pelvic prolapses to support each other through the process of diagnosis, repair and recovery.

With apologies for confusion in thread numbers - an earlier thread was called part 7 but it was actually the 6th thread.

Here are the previous threads:

Info from BBC Health

What is a pelvic prolapse?

As the muscles, ligaments and supporting tissues in the pelvis become weaker, they are less able to hold in the organs of the pelvis such as the womb (uterus) or bladder.

Gravity pulls these organs down and, in the more severe cases, may appear through the entrance to the vagina.

A variety of problems can occur, depending on where the weakness lies and which organs are able to descend, but in every case there is some degree of prolapse of the vaginal wall, which begins to invert (rather like a sock turning inside out).
Prolapse of the womb or uterus is the most common prolapse, affecting as many as one in eight older women to some degree
Prolapse of the bladder, known as a cystocele, is less common.
Prolapse of the urethra (the tube that carries urine out of the bladder) is known as a urethrocele.
Prolapse of the intestines is quite rare, and known as an enterocele or rectocele.

Symptoms

Symptoms depend on which tissues descend, and how severe the prolapse is.

They may include:
A sense of heaviness or pressure in the pelvis.
The appearance of a bulge of tissue in the genital area, which can be quite alarming, and is often red and sore.
Urinary problems, such as having to urinate more frequently, feeling the need urgently, being incontinent (losing control of the bladder) or, conversely, being unable to pass urine when you need to.
Pain in the pelvis or lower back.
Sexual problems, including pain and decreased libido.
Constipation.
Vaginal discharge or bleeding.

Treatment and recovery

Once a prolapse has developed, surgery to fix the affected organs is usually the only way to cure it effectively.

However, another option is to use a device known as a vaginal ring pessary. This is rather like a contraceptive diaphragm or cervical cap. It's made of silicone or latex, and placed in the vagina to push back the prolapsed organs and hold them in place. Many women happily manage their prolapse this way.

Absolutely! Though I still haven't risked any proper exercise so am a wee bit terrified that things may shoogle their way out if I start jumping up and down too much..

sikofops53 · 10/02/2014 20:05

Hi i came on here because i felt so alone and a bit of a freak because of my 3 repairs:im 10 wks post op and still everything feels so lumpy! is this the norm?(whatever that is)

WhoKnowsWhereTheTimeGoes · 10/02/2014 20:32

Hi Sikofops - can you remember how it felt at the same stage last time? What repair have you had? I had a rectocele repair 18 months ago and it took at least three months for all the swelling to go down completely. However some ridges and scarring have stayed, I'm stuck with those but they aren't causing any problems.

happylilme · 12/02/2014 22:39

Dragon hope your scan went well think it as today

Noordinary not long now to wait for op. Hope all goes well x it's the waiting around drove me mad.

I'm practically back to normal. Still get odd pain if I do to much but in ways I'm glad for it reminds me when to take it easy.

Had a tough week what with finding out of huge job loses and getting wisdom tooth out today but hey at least I got a new vagina that was built for purpose. Still on laxatives but the luxury of being able to poo without splitting is just so fantastic

Basketofchocolate · 13/02/2014 12:56

Right, am joining in.

Hysterectomy booked in a couple of weeks time.

Scared but hopeful that will finally manage to lead a more 'normal' life.

ElectricalBanana · 13/02/2014 14:28

Just back from appt with gynae consultant.

Now listed for TVT

But big problem....DH went to see the orthopaedics last Tuesday and he has been listed for a shoulder op! His op will be within 3 months. My op will be within 3 months. I have asked for my op to be postponed to the beginning of the summer hols when I will be off for 6 weeks.... By then DH will be able to drive.

Bloody hell we are a right pair of old crocks....

www.gutsense.org/gutsense/the-role-of-miralax-laxative-in-autism-dementia-alzheimer.html

If you highlight the whole address, right click, then go to link, it worked for me. The article is about the danger of Polyethylene glycol (PEG) in Lactulose and Movicol!

It doesn't help finding that there's Aspartame in Fibogel!

Thank God for Prunes!

BTW, can I use Anusol after surgery, only my bits are not used to working normally yet! All this normal flow has left me a little sore!

Noordinarygirl · 14/02/2014 00:18

happy only 5 sleeps to go now! My head is really all over the place now and my sleep patterns are rubbish. Last day (again!) at work tomorrow. If they cancel this op again I will handcuff myself to the bed and refuse to budge. Do you think I should take 'Roger' and use him as a weapon?

My moods are VERY up and down and I can't wait to leave work and make the most of this weekend by seeing friends and spending some 'quality' time with my daughters (16 and 18).

Nanna I think I should try to fit in a trip to Aldi or Asda and stock up on prunes. I don't relish the thought of taking any sort of medication for too long if there's something more natural that could do the same job. Does bran not help at all......or pears or beans??

I also can't recommend peppermint tea enough to anyone having keyhole surgery. It's the most brilliant way of getting all the trapped air out of your system, especially when you have those awful stabbing pains in yours shoulders and under your ribs. I HATED the taste of it at first but I'm totally hooked on the stuff now and have been drinking it every day since my hysterectomy (partial) in Nov '12.

Frenchfrogbutt · 14/02/2014 10:25

Hello from Paris , girls !
I have read all the différent threads , IT was a great confort to share these expériences . IT made me feel less bas about myse?f to know others go through it also. I have been diagnosed with a rectocele grade 2.
I had my baby last october.( i am 39) Its been quite a shock ! Just wondering if you has news from the girls who has their opérations few years ago?
Also i am surprised that young women sexually active are offered to get their repair through vagina in France IT seems the consensus is to ho through cœlioscopie . Do you know the différence ?
Good luck to those getting their operation and good recovery for the others
Bisous

Hi Footle - I just checked on the prunes' sugar effects. Apparently, if you are diabetic?, you just need to substitute them for some of your carbs, and the minerals and vitamins are healthier than the man-made chemicals in the laxatives. I soak them in boiling water and find them great on porridge, instead of the sugar I would normally put on, or have them with custard, as a pudding.

Nannasylv · 14/02/2014 20:14

cœlioscopie = laparoscopy (isn't Google translate brilliant!)

Nannasylv · 14/02/2014 20:16

Forgot to say, I checked, and Anusol is fine after this surgery, Thank God! (I was a little sore)

RainInTheSky · 15/02/2014 12:03

Footie, could you have porridge oats for breakfast every day? They seem to work really well to prevent constipation occurring in the first place.

Dragonroad · 15/02/2014 13:16

A quick update for one and all!
Had my scan this week and have seen the consultant. All is fine and I feel pretty well back to normal. I return to work straight after half term, which I am dreading. Back to unacceptable levels of stress which I determined to manage better than I did before I had this op.
Am now feeling very glad I had the op. Recovery has been longer and harder than expected but I am very happy with the results.
Happy, did you hang on to your job with all the changes at your place?

I wish I cud just die sooo bad. It feels like I.m exisfing not living. I.ve asked my husband to come on appts with me rather than me go alone. He says he can.t as it wud be too difficult to arrange childcare. I.d even settle for him helping by looking something up on internet to even try to help me. Its been 7mths and only just got appt with colorectal in March. Please god help me, I feel so low, a useless mother and that everyone I encounter thinks I.m disgusting.

WhoKnowsWhereTheTimeGoes · 15/02/2014 21:55

Kian - so sorry to read your post. Is there anyone else in real life who you can talk to about this? I know it's deeply personal but there are many, many of us out there with prolapse problems, I can't imagine any woman would be unsympathetic. Do you think your feelings are just about the prolapses or are there other problems? I obviously don't know anything about you or your family but I have never yet met a mother who describes herself as a useless who actually is.

laughingeyes2013 · 15/02/2014 22:05

Can anyone please tell me what I can expect from NHS Physio to help with post partum vaginal wall prolapse?
My continence is not affected but the prolapse does block my bladder so I have to constantly pee and can never empty properly (lots of non-baby related sleepless nights!).

I had Physio referral but all I was offering there was to go away and perfect pelvic floor exercises (which I was already doing reasonably well anyway, just needed time to recover from giving birth to 'feel' it properly again when I did the exercises really).

But I'm not sure - I was kind of expecting a bit more than that. I've heard of electrical gadgets to help and of course surgery as a last resort.

My Physio tried to talk me out of breastfeeding as she seemed to think there is little that can be done until I stop, but didn't say what else could be done. And I haven't fully stopped yet.

happylilme · 15/02/2014 23:08

Kian it broke my heart reading your post. Having baby then having prolapse is very hard emotionally to deal with. Us women are suppose to paint on a face of happiness and bliss but rarely for most people life is like that. I'm really sure your not a bad mum. To be good enough is good enough to be perfect is impossible. I hope you find answers at your appointment. My hubby didn't come with me to appointments. I think he felt awkward. A lot of the time he appeared disinterested but I guess there was only so much he could do. Very little I would add.
Please don't be hard on yourself. I'm sure people don't think that you are disgusting. Like wheredoesthetimego says is there anyone you can talk to just to help you through this upsetting time.

Dragon found out that out of 330 we will be left with 133 staff including premises officers receptionist so drastic cuts. Voluntary redundancy on offer then back to written and interviews. Such joy. Not stressing about it as I've been here too many times ( 4th interview in 8 years) what will be will be. Not sure if that means I can't be arsed anymore lol maybe new career.
That's great news about your scan at least now you can be reassured that in the near future Roger could reappear from that lonely drawer.

Noordinary good luck only a few days now. While I don't condone violence if cancelled I would have Roger ready for assault. Will be thinking of you. Keep us posted

Frenchfrogbutt · 16/02/2014 12:10

Hi all ,
