Welcome to thread 8 (again - see below) of a long-running series of posts from ladies suffering from pelvic prolapses to support each other through the process of diagnosis, repair and recovery.

With apologies for confusion in thread numbers - an earlier thread was called part 7 but it was actually the 6th thread.

Here are the previous threads:

Info from BBC Health

What is a pelvic prolapse?

As the muscles, ligaments and supporting tissues in the pelvis become weaker, they are less able to hold in the organs of the pelvis such as the womb (uterus) or bladder.

Gravity pulls these organs down and, in the more severe cases, may appear through the entrance to the vagina.

A variety of problems can occur, depending on where the weakness lies and which organs are able to descend, but in every case there is some degree of prolapse of the vaginal wall, which begins to invert (rather like a sock turning inside out).
Prolapse of the womb or uterus is the most common prolapse, affecting as many as one in eight older women to some degree
Prolapse of the bladder, known as a cystocele, is less common.
Prolapse of the urethra (the tube that carries urine out of the bladder) is known as a urethrocele.
Prolapse of the intestines is quite rare, and known as an enterocele or rectocele.

Symptoms

Symptoms depend on which tissues descend, and how severe the prolapse is.

They may include:
A sense of heaviness or pressure in the pelvis.
The appearance of a bulge of tissue in the genital area, which can be quite alarming, and is often red and sore.
Urinary problems, such as having to urinate more frequently, feeling the need urgently, being incontinent (losing control of the bladder) or, conversely, being unable to pass urine when you need to.
Pain in the pelvis or lower back.
Sexual problems, including pain and decreased libido.
Constipation.
Vaginal discharge or bleeding.

Treatment and recovery

Once a prolapse has developed, surgery to fix the affected organs is usually the only way to cure it effectively.

However, another option is to use a device known as a vaginal ring pessary. This is rather like a contraceptive diaphragm or cervical cap. It's made of silicone or latex, and placed in the vagina to push back the prolapsed organs and hold them in place. Many women happily manage their prolapse this way.

Op due tomorrow! They haven't cancelled it yet so looking good.

happylilme · 10/12/2013 22:37

Good luck Dragonroad will be thinking of you. Try to go easy on the morphine is my advice, deep breathing.

Footle, that's great to hear, isn't it strange how you take weeing and pooing for granted until something goes wrong. I really didn't want to have surgery that I would live to regret but can't carry on as I am so was feeling a bit stuck. I will hunt through the other threads for more good news. Thanks for taking the time to reply and long may the straight pooing continue!! Smile

WhoKnowsWhereTheMistletoes · 11/12/2013 20:58

My rectocele repair last year was successful too Nancy Smile.

TMI WARNING Blush was just wondering if anyone else had slightly more discharge after op for rectocele. It's milky colour not itchy or any smell. Sorry just worrying about infection as I know this is common.

Dragon hope everything went well with your op Smile

WhoKnowsWhereTheMistletoes · 12/12/2013 17:21

Oh no Footle - that was what I was warned could happen if you only had the rectocele done, the lack of support for the cystocele means it is likely to get worse. I'm at risk of that too, my cystocele does feel quite large, but so far is not a problem. Having said that, having been also warned that having both done together could lead to overtightness I'm still glad I just had the one done.

Happy - I did get an infection after my repair, the odour was what gave it away for me, if there's no odour that's a good sign.

happylilme · 12/12/2013 18:32

whoknowswherethemistletoes- Thanks I find myself worrying more about the recovery than the actual operation. Strange!!!

Footle - I'm sorry to hear about your cystocele, the things us women have to go through.

MrsClairet- I went without morphine for two reasons, Last operation I had I was totally out of it for 2 days, effected my heart rhythm and made me severally constipated. They gave me pethadine (sp???) this time, was so much better. TMI I had my first straight poo in four years only 2 days after op as I had neither morphine or codeine. Tramadol is a good pain reliever without constipation. Just my experience though, I Know we are all different.

whoknowswherethemistletoes - thanks for letting me know that's good to hear.

Footle - really sorry to hear about your cystocele but I agree that it doesn't mean that the rectocyle repair was a mistake. Sending good vibes your way!

surewoman · 13/12/2013 19:08

Hi Footle - I had the TVT inserted when the cystocele/rectocele was repaired. I am convinced that the TVT helped sort out the cystocele and have often wondered that maybe the cystocele was a bi-product of the urethrocele. Needless to say, all is very well in that department and I am very glad I had the TVT, even after everyone else's horror stories! I was also told that I didn't have much tissue and that things would be very tight afterwards, but it isn't too bad at all. My rectocele was keeping the cystocele at bay, and the minute it was fixed the cystocele popped down.

On another note, does anyone have a mirena coil?? Good bad points please xx

happylilme · 13/12/2013 19:20

I had the mirena coil fitted due to heavy painful periods.
Good points - it really did stop the flow of blood
Eased a lot of my pain
Eased my endometrioses
Never had to worry about Flooding (sorry tmi)
Eased my BAD PMT symptoms
Bad points - made me put on 1 and 1/2 stone in weight
Nobody told me it was sore to put in. Bad cramping
though only for a few days

My advice would be to take pain killers before you have it inserted.

WhoKnowsWhereTheMistletoes · 13/12/2013 19:21

Sure I've had one for 5 years (need to get it replaced now). Best thing ever (except contact lenses). I got it because I had very heavy periods after DD was born and couldn't use tampons due to prolapses. I had fairly continual light bleeding for about 6 months, then nothing, I get two or three days a year of spotting. Other threads have had very mixed views though, real love it or hate it thing.

WhoKnowsWhereTheMistletoes · 13/12/2013 19:22

I had no pain on insertion, just got up and walked home.

happylilme · 13/12/2013 19:28

God you are lucky I would say I had a high pain threshold but boy my eyes watered after. Was a bit like really bad period pains. Maybe it was how they did it???? That being said I found it very good. Xmas Smile

WhoKnowsWhereTheMistletoes · 13/12/2013 19:31

I am a bit nervous about getting it replaced, I may not be so lucky 2nd time and your advice about painkillers is a good idea.

RFLmum · 13/12/2013 19:53

Hi ladies. May I join this thread? I'm 12 days post op for rectocele, enterocele and perineum repair. I'm walking about a bit but tire easily and today I've had sharp pains and general stinging. Has anyone else experienced this? TMI but every bowel movement is a drama and I'm still on 3 doses of paracetamol to get through.
I haven't read the full thread but I'd second the advice to stay away from the morphine if possible. I vomited for 2 days and I'm pretty sure it was the morphine. Grateful for any posts reassuring me that this is normal and that the outcome could still be successful.

happylilme · 13/12/2013 20:29

RFLmum- I am 7 days post op for rectocele and perineum repair. I get stinging and had sharp pains in my bottom area. I found taking dulcolax very good at moving things along for me and drinking lots of water. Consultant said to me that for first three months its best to try and keep your poo like liquid allowing muscle to heal.Xmas Blush
I find the tiredness comes over me in waves. All of a sudden it just hits me. I guess its our bodies way of telling us to take it easy and mend.
Like I said before im more nervous after operation.

RFLmum · 13/12/2013 21:28

Hi happy. That's interesting - the advice about keeping thing liquid. I must admit the thought of a normal poo terrifies me! I had/have high hopes for this operation. A friend of mine is a fitness instructor and had it done 5 years ago. She was teaching aerobics after 4 weeks and hasn't looked back. I've been promising myself I might be able to run again. I so hope that's the case. :-)

lotsofquestions000 · 13/12/2013 22:49

RFLmum I about 9 weeks post rectocele repair. Have had lots of issues over BMs and not getting blocked but that is much better now and I do 'push' now and it does seem fine but has been a drama - have a look up thread for the gory details. Everything feels so much better down there now though so am pleased I had it done. Would like to get back to exercise but am waiting til after xmas now. I do still get the odd bit of stinging but nothing too much to cause concern. Hope your recovery goes well.

surewoman · 14/12/2013 06:47

Hi RFLmum - I was sick with morphine too! I had enterocele (very large one) rectocele/cystocele tvt and perineum as well. I was very anxious about BM's for a long while afterwards and took lactulose every morning for most of the following year, plus the odd suppository. It is only now (1+ years later) that I am not taking it, but still need the odd suppository around my period time, as I tend to get a bit constipated then. I asked the Consultant if there was a problem with taking lactulose for so long (and using suppositories) and he said no, completely harmless, but to drink lots of water during the day. I am absolutely fine now, and back to all normal activities with a vengeance. Hang in there and be very patient (just don't lift anything too heavy) - it is worth it in the end! xxx

RFLmum · 14/12/2013 13:32

Thanks all. Having a good day today so feeling much more positive about it all. Staying on the Movicol for the foreseeable future however!

myladyparts · 14/12/2013 22:23

Hello all - I just registered after finding this thread - I just had confirmation from my doctor yesterday that my bladder has dropped - whilst doing an internal she asked me to cough and I suppose things must have been visible from this. I suspect that it is more then my bladder that has dropped though, because when I get into the squatting position and when toileting, I feel substantial bulging either side of my vulva and underneath around my bottom. I had suspected for a while that things were wrong down below mainly due to the very obvious bulging but I had but tried to ignore the problem hoping it would go away. I have spent an age googling pelvic prolapse and absolutely scaring myself to death in the process. Anyway my Dr has referred me to see gyno and states it will take about 6 weeks for appmt.

A bit about me - I am 33 - I have two girls 8 and 6 both delivered via C sections. I have very recently lost quite a bit of weight and have been exercising (high intensive interval training) and lifting kettle bells which has helped with the weight loss. I asked the dr if I need to stop the heavy lifting and she said not to stop, but when I google, I read the heavy lifting makes things worse so I am confused! But mostly I have become obsessed with my ladybits and I feel absolutely devastated about it all! :(
