MMR injections

Please could someone update me on the latest relating to the MMR jabs.

Is it now "safe" to let your baby have them? Is there any advantage/disadvantage to having the single jabs?

Sorry if this is another old chestnut.

I'm rather relieved to find out there's still a single tetanus jab, even as late as 10. Am constantly worried about it. Is it thimersol-free?

Jimjamskeepingoffvaxthreads · 14/06/2006 20:40

Yes it is now . That's when the baby one disappeaed (when they finally removed thimerosal from baby jabs, so of course the single tetanus/ DT had to go.)

Socci · 14/06/2006 21:19

So is it possible to get single tetanus?

Jimjams - I heard that tetanus doesn't last for very long - is this true? Tetanus is one I would consider if truly safe and effective.

chapsmum · 14/06/2006 21:21

You can have your wee one be given a course of tetanus immunoglobulin if they do sustain a high risk cut socci.
There is not single tetanus jab avaliable in the UK for under 10s at all.

ruty · 14/06/2006 21:25

hmmm but that is a blood product chapsmum - not so keen on that. I know they are probably sourcing it from outside UK but still a bit uncomfortable with it.

Jimjamskeepingoffvaxthreads · 14/06/2006 21:26

They limit the number you're allowed to have in a lifetime now Socci (because of allergic type reactions or something- stronger reactions anyway with each jab or something).

That's true chapsmum- but it still conerns me because Neudstaedter (who has written a very good book on vaccinations) had to treat a boy for tetanus who got it from a splinter.

It was a safe jab socci (minus the thimerosal!) - even quite a few alternative types like it because it follows the body's natural route of infection for tetanus (puncture wound) :o

Erm one way you could tell was by looking at the money per shot that the manufacturers in the States had to pay into the vaccine compensation fund. I cna't remember the figures but for the old DT it was about 6 cents or something, whilst for the DTP it was about 3 dollars! (You pay more the more dangerous the shot),

harpsichordcarrier · 14/06/2006 21:32

yes that's the thing jimjams (just thinking about the single jabs issue) - that if it IS the measles virus that is suspected of causing the problems then why introduce the measles virus at all. I wonder if there is any evidential basis to the assertion that the other two at the same time might make things worse.
And of course, as you say, the vulnerable/triggerable (not even sure if that is a word?) children would presumably be vulnerable to the measles virus in its live form too, therefore particularly at risk in the event of an outbreak of measles.

Jimjamskeepingoffvaxthreads · 14/06/2006 21:49

There's anecdotal evidence - and some suggestions from the increase in autism following close infections from wild type viruses. IN fact though I think that the suspicion is more on MMR and close proxmity to chickenpox- an issue in the States as they give chickenpox vaccine at the same time as MMR. I know there's an increase, but not sure its significant. No idea whehter the chickenpox jab is a live virus though.

To complicate there are issues around autism and herpes type viruses anyway (which of course chickenpox is). Of interest to me as ds1 had a regression following eczema herpeticum.

FrannyandZooey · 14/06/2006 21:51

Jimjams, I don't know quite how to put this, but do you think it might be time for a name change?

Wink
harpsichordcarrier · 14/06/2006 21:54

It is so bloody complicated isn't it? I mean, every time I think I have a grip on it another aspect of it opens up.

Jimjamskeepingoffvaxthreads · 14/06/2006 22:00

Yes exactly, the Richard Lathe book screams that really. I think its just comes down to autistic children are fucked physiologically. I don't suppose it matters to most people why, so people are right its boring. There are far more interesting things to worry about.

Probaby F&Z, but maybe better to take a mumsnet break.

ruty · 14/06/2006 22:20

Oh Jimjams i know you may have too for your own sanity, but i really wish you didn't have to. You have so many here who rely on your sound advice and brilliant knowledge. Smile

ruty · 14/06/2006 22:24

too? to.

Socci · 15/06/2006 12:24

Thanks for that information Jimjams and chapsmum - I do worry every time she falls over - that splinter story is scary.

Roosty · 30/06/2006 16:46

Hi Im after some advise. My 2 daughters have both had the 3 single jabs. The oldest will be 7 in August and we have been notified that there are 2 suspected cases of mumps in her school. Should I be worried as they did not have boosters?
