Mirena coil

Hi all, after my treatment (see smear tests) I am wanting to have the Mirena coil fitted. I've read the blurb but don't actually know anyone who has one. Really I'm interested more in the fact that it often changes / stops periods because of the small amount of progesterone in it, and was wondering how this affected people. Also I was told there is a lot of breakthrough bleeding when first inserted? I was under the impression that you can't feel it at all, but wondering if that's true? I've never had a coil fitted before so hope it is the right decision for me. My GP told me it was as affective a contraception method as man having a vascetomy!! Which sounds great for me at the moment... Any comments welcome.

Hi, I have had Mirena for nearly 6 months, I have painful breast, mood swings and weight gain and an inability to lose a pound. My periods are better and I have been told that after 6 months everything gets better, does this mean the weight and moods will improve or is it just the periods? As I am nearly at the 6 month stage I could try and stick with it but the weight is really making me sad. If anyone has had it removed how long before the moods and weight could improve?

yaya · 06/05/2005 21:15

Had it removed, yes!!! Quite painless removal actually, thanks alero81! Just glad to get rid of it back on combi pill, anyone heard of Yasmin? Is it good for period pain sufferers? grimble, your situation sounds very much like my own I'm not sure about weight loss after 6 months, read the whole thread and see if anyone has mentioned it. I was really sad about my weight gain too the only real way to reverse the side effects. let us know how things go..good luck

you are very welcomed yaya...

I have had mirena 5 months, got it to help heavy bleeding and severe cramps. Since fitting I have only had 13 clear days without bleeding/spotting and I now have PMT and sore breasts and although cramps are nowhere near as bad, I have them every day. Went back to Doc yesterday, but she said it could take up to 8 months to settle, so I am going to stick with it until August. I cant wait til August, either everything will settle or I can get this thing taken out.

Hi

I went to my family planning clinic today to have a mirena coil fitted but was in absolute agony with it as they were unable to get the dilator through the uterus. has anyone else had this problem?
they have told me to go back next week for another go but i am quite scared to go through the same ordeal again.
did anyone else have to have a 2nd attempt?
If so did you have so much pain the next time and did painkillers before help at all?

thanks

yaya · 11/05/2005 19:05

Hama102, I wouldn't bother inserting it if you have had a reaction to any hormones like deprovera in the pass. It was really painful to insert and If I had know I would of taken painkillers, also the pain afterwards is nothing like I felt before it when on for 3 weeks straight. Sorry if it seems harsh but I think the mirena coil needs some more researching before it is offered as the answer to the prayers of women... read the whole thread and you'll noctice all the horror stories of weight gain (massive I might add), mood swings, painful breasts and backache to name a few...is it really worth it

alero81 · 12/05/2005 21:34

Hama if you had that much trouble then i would not give it a second attempt at all... also i just had mine removed after 8 months 8 months of hell that is... so my advice to you is you gave it one shot but you would be crazy to attempt it again... sorry but there is just to many problems that they do not tell you about with mirena..

toomanypushchairs · 12/05/2005 22:05

HELP? What now? It has just taken me half an hour to read this thread. I am going to the clinic on monday to sort out having a mirena coil fitted. Now I'm scared, completely put off, what should I do? I am 32 have had all the children I'll ever have(4 of them) dh has had the snip. My periods are the problem, really heavy, make me feel ill, unbearable cramps, cause aneamia etc etc. Doc sujjested this as its not a good idea to be on the pill for years. I already need to lose some weight, I don't want to put on any more. what do you all suggest? should I really take the pill for the next 10+ years?

Furball · 12/05/2005 22:11

Well as with most things there are two sides and the other is..... I love mine! Best thing is for me no periods, how fab is that? I'd say give it a go and see, there are loads of women who do get on with it.

toomanypushchairs · 12/05/2005 22:12

I did try the injections about 6yrs ago but continually bled. Doc said it would settle after 2nd one but it didn't. Will this happen again? How long have you had yours?

linnywith2 · 12/05/2005 22:22

am off to the doc to have mine checked as have had lot of cramps and bleeding over the past 6 weeks, had it fitted last june, all seemed to settle down after 6 mths but now its back to when i had it first fitted, dont know whats hapening, has it fallen out and i didnt notice? iis that possible?? guess ill know tomorrow..
overall am disappointed as i thought id be fine for next few yrs..

sarahbo · 12/05/2005 22:28

hiya all, gosh im glad i stumbled over htis, i had a coil for 3 years a normal one, it fell out, then a year and half ago i had MIrena fitted and ive put ona stone ( i watch my diet alot and exercise to riduculous standards) so it must be the coil, i have had lumps like acne on my forehead and chin and really greasy skin that looks like grease poured on my face, and my hair is so greasy and lank. I also have PMT so bad I have tried to self harm myself. I never had no problems with the other normal coil, and never had acne, IM HAVING IT TAKEN OUT IN 4 DAYS TIME. CANT WAIT. im going back to the copper iud. iM ALWAYS BLOATED AND MY BOOBS HURT SO MUCH AND HAVE SICKNESS LIKE IM PREGNANT! IM SURE I CAN HANDLE THE BLEEDING, id rather have that than an awful life hating myself/pmt/weight gain/acne/water retention. ITS JUST NOT WORTH IT !!!

sarahbo · 12/05/2005 22:32

Im also getting spotty back and legs, and itchy rashes, does anyone else get that???? please let me know, if any one gets the same symptoms as me. cheers girls!!!

special · 12/05/2005 22:56

i am the same as furball, after six months it all settled down and i get extremely light periods, and best of all hardly any pmt ( i used to be really bad with pmt), my boobs got really sore but that has not happened for the last two months. I have put on a couple of pounds but i put that down to lifestyle at the moment rather than the mirena - plus my age (42)I hope that helps

Berries · 13/05/2005 10:47

Had my second one fitted about a month ago. Week 2 spent all week with what felt like raging PMT and put on 3lb (alwys go for carbs when due on), but have since lost that (going to ww so know what I weigh & what I'm eating). Just had 1st period. Never stopped periods completely, but much lighter (settled down to light bleed lasting for 2 days - sorry if TMI). Also had bad problems with period since a teenager, and had copper coil fitted first (6 yrs ago), which resulted in periods lasting for 3 weeks - yuk. Definately recommend it, but watch the weight if you get PMT.

passtheprozac · 13/05/2005 10:51

think mine is about due to be replaced. hurt to buggery to put in, really worried about having it out.does anyone know what i can expect?

Berries · 13/05/2005 11:10

Didn't feel it come out at all, but did take quite a long time to sort out (the 'pack' they opened had some things missing & had to get another one) Had mine done at the well women clinic, where they do a lot and I do think the practise makes a difference.

birchfield · 13/05/2005 12:11

Hiya Berries,Was just wondering how much you knew about the different types of coil.I have the depo injection at the minute but ive put on a stone that i cant shift an wanted to change to the coil without the hormones(i think!)which one r u on and have you had any weight problems?

Berries · 13/05/2005 12:19

i am on the mirena (with hormones) Tried the non hormone one for 12 months but has very heavy periods (lasted 3 weeks out of 5 & had to change st every 2 hours - nice). Had the mirena for 5 years now (on 2nd one). Did put on a bit of weight ( few pounds) initially but put that down to PMT like symptoms. This settled down within the first few months (but have put on a lot of weight since - due to other factors though) Love the fact that you don't have to worry about it and that periods a v. light - they do stop altogether for some people (but not sure I would like that)

crazyandconfused · 13/05/2005 12:23

Have not read this whole thread but after having several different coils have now got Mirena with hormones on it , am finding it ok though never have period and have put on some weight (yes I do a test every month because I am so paraniod) would be good if I could have some sort of show just to put my mind at ease.
My last coil had to be surgiacly removed it had imbedded itself in my cervix

birchfield · 13/05/2005 12:26

I think id rather bleed to death than put on any more weight, its really driving me crazy!I dont have any periods with the depo now which is nice tho.Do you know of anything else that is effective as a contracepive but doesn't affect your weight? Are you certain that your weight gain isn't from the coil?Im just so worried because ive got a summer hol coming up and cant stand the thought of looking the way i do now on the beach!

crazyandconfused · 13/05/2005 12:30
