Mirena coil

Hi all, after my treatment (see smear tests) I am wanting to have the Mirena coil fitted. I've read the blurb but don't actually know anyone who has one. Really I'm interested more in the fact that it often changes / stops periods because of the small amount of progesterone in it, and was wondering how this affected people. Also I was told there is a lot of breakthrough bleeding when first inserted? I was under the impression that you can't feel it at all, but wondering if that's true? I've never had a coil fitted before so hope it is the right decision for me. My GP told me it was as affective a contraception method as man having a vascetomy!! Which sounds great for me at the moment... Any comments welcome.

Hi There, I've had this coil in for just over five years and have loved it. Other than weight gain it's been fantastic.

I've had it removed to try for a babie, found out on Monday that i was five weeks gone. had intercourse at about 12am and by 2 am was bleeding quite heavy. when i got up at 8 bleeding has stopped.

Wondered if anyone eles had miscarriage or problems with pregnancy after this coil.

Tummyfire · 24/05/2005 00:07

Hi everyone, I had a mirena coil inserted in February '05, and have had problems with intermittent bleeding, and a strong almost hormonal type odour when passing urine. Despite two courses of antibiotics no success. So only alternative is to have it removed. Anyone else had these type of problems?

PARTTIMEBLONDE · 26/05/2005 00:34

hi tummyfire u should do a search using just mirena and it will get u on to there web page everythig im after reading about it im starting to wonder if its worth it there seems to be alot more bad stories than good

Honone · 06/06/2005 18:40

Hello

Had merina fitted in Feb and periods have gone from being very heavy for 7 days to not so heavy but I leak a bit up to 5 days before period and sometimes 3 0r 4 days after. How long does it take for your periods to settle down after you have had the coil fitted as never had a coil before. Also experiencce lower back pain around period time. Is this normal?

oldbuzzard · 14/06/2005 22:13

Having mirena removed this week after 7 months of hell. Have had bad PMT, and mood swings which I never had before it was fitted, Can anyone tell me how long after removal it takes to feel normal again.

I had the Mirena coil for two years and it was great. Took the pain out of my periods and made them much lighter. No weight gain or any other symptoms. It was easy to have fitted and I took it out myself as we wanted another baby. Got pregnant within 6 weeks.

The majority of users get another after five years so it does suit a lot of people. I think the answer is to try it and see if it suits you. I will be getting another after the baby is born.

alizda · 15/06/2005 15:37

i had the mirena fitted 4 weeks ago and just recently this last week my hair has been getting so greasy. i could normally get away with washing my hair every 3-4 days now i'm having to wash every day because it looks and feels so greasy - is this a side effect of the coil????

was on the depo jab before and never had this problem

rugbytouchlinemum · 16/06/2005 14:27

Well, after 10 mths of hell lam today having my coil out. I had the copper 7 after the birth of my twins some years ago without any problems what so ever. Had the mirena fitted last August under general as it was to painful otherwise. Since then l have gained 3 stone in weight feel like a fat horrible beached whale, have terrible mood swings and just HATE it. I have read with some interest the comments on this board and lam quite shocked at some of the write ups as l thought l was reading about myself. How and why do we have to suffer like this, my doctor laughed when l went for my 6 wks check up and said l was being silly having gain a stone in weight. I have felt so depressed at times l didnt want to get out of bed. Have also lost my sex drive, is there anyone at there who feels the same having quite a high drive before hand to nothing. So you husband reading this dont blame us its the alien inside thats doing it.
Roll on 7.30 when l hope to get my life back.
Would love to hear from anyone who thinks they are going mad as l did.

oldbuzzard · 18/06/2005 13:12

Much the same experience as yourself rugbytouchlinemum. I am getting mine removed after just 7 months, as I cant stand the person its turned me into. I would be really interested to hear from you after removal.. Could you please let me know if getting it out was as painful as getting in and how long it takes you to feel normal again

Martimumofthree · 21/06/2005 15:54

Hi everyone, thought I would add my thoughts on the Mirena coil. Had the coil fitted on 23rd June 2004, so nearly a year. Since I had it fitted I have bled constantly for approx 9 out of the 12 months and the smell is really offensive. The doctor must be sick of the sight of me, have tried most tablets available to stop this. The last lot were mefenamic acid, which made me feel so giddy and sick that I stopped taking it. The hospital have told me that if everything does not settle down then I could have a hysterectomy, but obviously I'm not really looking forward to that as I am only 36. I have been told of another procedure called an ablation, which is said to remove the entire lining of the womb. Not sure about that either will have to talk to GP again. If anyone was going to get the Mirena fitted, I personally would advise them to think long and hard about it, as after a year mine still has not settled down.

jolima71 · 26/06/2005 15:03

IN REPLY TO YOUR MESSAGE OLDBUZZARD ( NO OFFENSE)WELL WITH JUST OVER ONE WEEK WITHOUT THE COIL AND ALREADY FEELING ALOT BETTER.IT TOOK SECONDS TO TAKE OUT THE COIL AND WITHOUT ANY PAIN JUST A CRAMP LIKE FEELING WHICH LASTED ABOUT 10 MINUTES OR SO. AFTER THE DOCTOR TOLD MY HUSBAND TO TAKE ME FOR A NICE LONG DRINK - SOUNDED GOOD TO ME!!
AND 10 TEN DAYS AFTER HAVE ALREADY LOST 5LBS - YOU CAN EVEN SEE MY WAIST LINE AGAIN. THE DOCTOR TOLD ME THAT A VERY SMALL PERCENT OF WOMEN REACT BADLY TO THE COIL- TOLD HIM TO LOOK ON THIS MESSAGE BOARD AND HE WILL THEN SEE WHAT A SMALL PERCENT IS. I HAVE TO GIVE HIM A REPORT AFTER A MONTH TO LET HIM JUST HOW IAM FEELING AS HE IS PUTTING PAPERS TOGETHER ABOUT THE EFFECTS THIS COIL. I REALLY DO FEEL SO MUCH BETTER - EVEN LAUGHING SOMETHING I HAVENT DONE IN MONTHS JUST GLAD TO GET THE ALLIEN OUT FOR GOOD. LET ME KNOW HOW YOU GET ON TO.

oldbuzzard · 26/06/2005 19:21

lhw02 · 29/06/2005 16:28

When I had the mirena coil fitted 3 years ago after the birth of our daughter, I started to have anxiety attacks and depression. We thought it was PND but 3 weeks ago I had the coil removed and I feel completely different (less nervous and with more confidence) which made me wonder and look for this website. Has anyone else had these symptoms? Also I had palpatations which seem to have stopped. Can this really be due to this coil. Please can someone explain?

oldbuzzard · 01/07/2005 19:55

After 8 months, finally had mirena removed today. I was dreading it as it was so painful to get put in, but there was no problem getting it taken out. Hopefully, I will start to feel human again soon. Will keep you posted

lhw02 · 06/07/2005 10:05

well its now 4 weeks since i had my mirena removed and i can not believe how much better i am feeling. I have so much more energy (I am sorting out every draw, cupboard and wardrobe in my house) before I just sat around the house not wanting to go out or do anything. I have even started swimming while the kids are in school and going out with friends again (before I always stayed in as I was to anxious)I know that I still have a long way to go and still have the odd scary panic attack but I feel like my old self again. I hope this message helps any one feeling scared and anxious since having the mirena coil. LOL

oldbuzzard · 06/07/2005 17:00

Its amazing that this "tiny" amount of hormone can cause such side effects. I was on the combined pill for years and had none of the side effects that i've had with mirena. I'm just glad its gone for good.

rugbytouchlinemum · 07/07/2005 18:37

relpying to ihw02. Well must be something in that as l to have started clearing everything that stands still for more than two minute's ;-) . my husband thinks lve gone nuts. The weight is already coming off - thank you god !! It's as if a spell has been lifted from me. Glad to see l really am normal - well l think so anyway !
Keep me posted...... great to hear everyone is feeling so much better.

dawnlizsmith · 08/07/2005 13:50

Stumbled across your site by accident but would like to add my problem. I had a Mirena fitted last September and was totally unprepared for the pain when having it fitted and the heavy blood loss for 2 weeks afterwards. Periods did get lighter for 3 months but now things are deteriorating badly. Have put on half a stone since Christmas despite eating like a rabbit and don't remember the last time I had a day without spotting. It is driving me nuts. Still get headaches, backache, sore boobs, tiredness, but instead of a week before a period it is every other day! and have been asking to have it removed for the last 3 months. Am now being referred to the hospital where it was fitted as although my local surgery do insert them, they didn't do mine! Do you suppose there is a reason for my doctor wanting me to 'perservere' for 12 months? Perhaps he doesn't get paid until I have been using it for a year. Anyway have had enough of it, although it looks like I will have to wait 3 months for an appointment at the hospital. My doctor incidentally, poo-hooed the idea of any side effects!

rugbytouchlinemum · 08/07/2005 19:49

Hi dawnlizsmith
please dont wait for another 3 months to get this alien out of you.is there a local well womens clinic or a family planing clinic where you could have it removed. it only takes seconds to remove it - honest and you only feel a little cramp in your stomach. my life was hell with it and l just couldnt bear the thought of anyone else going through the hell l did. i cried when l found this message board with releif l thought l was going mad - but when l saw all the other threads saying just how l felt there was no other than to have it removed and quick...did you see the thread when the poor girl was trying to self harm herself.....that was awful to read. my doctor who is quite high up in his proffession said that this mirena coil is still being tested -hmmmm never thought l would be a guinnie pig. had all your side affects along with tiny little bisters around my hair line - all have gone now. not sure if l can do this but if anyone would like to email me l am getting together a list from women who have had problems as l have to give him a feed back after a month of having it removed (of course would not mention names)- l feel so stronly about this bloody thing and the effect its having on us - as you can probably tell - perhaps they should ban it.
anyone who wants to email me you can on [email protected] where l would be maore than happy to talk with you.
