Mirena coil

Hi all, after my treatment (see smear tests) I am wanting to have the Mirena coil fitted. I've read the blurb but don't actually know anyone who has one. Really I'm interested more in the fact that it often changes / stops periods because of the small amount of progesterone in it, and was wondering how this affected people. Also I was told there is a lot of breakthrough bleeding when first inserted? I was under the impression that you can't feel it at all, but wondering if that's true? I've never had a coil fitted before so hope it is the right decision for me. My GP told me it was as affective a contraception method as man having a vascetomy!! Which sounds great for me at the moment... Any comments welcome.

Im about to get the mirina inserted and I currently have the copper kind and Ive had it for 6 years .I had no pain with insertion then.Just wondering how everyone likes it.

yaya · 15/04/2005 14:53

Dorike, The bleeding usually goes on for around 3 months on and off, I've had spotting and some pain but I'm holding on for the 6 months like some others have said in this thread, if things are no better by then I'll remove it, I suggest you do the same. Let me know how things are going!!

I had this coil filled, six months later got pregnant and had a beautiful DD. Two older children 16 & 13 shocked but not as shocked as we were-I thought it was early menopause or cancer as i felt soo ill. Wouldn't be without her now! It did take a lot of getting used to.

Dophus · 17/04/2005 11:46

I had mine fitted about a month ago, 7 weeks after giving birth.

It hurt like hell to be fitted and I was crampy for about 24hours. I bled for about two weeks but have had nothing since. I can;t seem to lose my pregnancy weight and have no interest in sex!

Dorike · 18/04/2005 18:22

Thanks Yaya for the advice. I'm just worried coz spotting has been continuous(daily basis) and it's been 4wks since been fitted. It's interesting to see how duration varies between women.

I've had mine for five years now, and am getting ready to replace. I'm wondering if anyone has done multiple Mirenas, and how this has been long term? This has been great in general, although crampy in the beginning, and have had pinkish periods lasting less than a day for the past four and a half years. No side effects, except for increased mucus - at times annoying, but what contraceptive isn't?

Hi has anyone heard of producing breast milk and not being pregnant?.....

michlou · 26/04/2005 10:43

BEEN ON MERINA FOR JUST OVER A YEAR, HAD VERY UNSETTLED PERIODS SOME LAST JUST AN HOUR BUT EXTREMLY HEAVY (REALLY FLOODS OUT) OTHERS COME AND GO OVER A PERIOD OF TWO/ THREE WEEKS.
REALLY CONSERNED AT MOMENT, BEEN FEELING REALLY WEARED FOR A FEW DAYS LIKE I DID WITH MY LAST TWO PREGNANCIES.
HOW LIKELY ARE YOU TO FALL PREGNATE WITH COIL STILL FITTED????
WOULD BE GREATFULL IF ANYONE OUT THERE COULD GIVE SOME ADVICE, NOT SURE IF I COULD COPE WITH ANOTHER CHILD AT THE MOMENT. TWO TODDLERS CAN BE A HANDFULL.

wysiwyg · 26/04/2005 11:35

Mannia - re producing milk when not pregnant - I breastfed my DD for about 8 months (she is now 5) and the milk never totally dried up (no leakage or anything but could produce a few drops if squeezed my nipple ) I did ask my GP re this but told was normal.
Recently I read somewhere that once you have ever been pregnant you can breastfeed anytime again - just need enough suckling to stimulate milk production.
(Isn't that what cows do?)

I had the merina fitted nov 2004 after coming off the depo inj although I had not gained weight I had lost none since the birth of my daughter 2003. I had light bleeding for 2 months and the expected cramping for about 24 hours after insertion. These last two months I have had abdominal pain, bad back pain and last week was diagnosed with ibs my doctor said their was a link between the merina and ibs.I have had my pains investigated swabs, urine, pelvic scan, and blood tests all have shown no problems so I think I will have the coil removed next week and go on the waiting list for sterilization. What we women have to go through!

alero81 · 30/04/2005 01:32

i had the mirena fitted in august 2004.. i had many problems like depression, not being able to drop a pound at all. and i just had it removed today. so hopefully i will be well.. i do not recomend this to anyone.. please use good old fashioned methods like a condom and foam or something other then the mirena i think that it needs to be futher looked into before they make it sound so wonderful because all it is a NIGHTMARE

but hopefully everything will be back to normal

sallystrawberry, I have had my mirena since end of january it was uncomfortable to have fitted and I bled for 3 weeks after intsertion I now have very light period every two weeks lasting two weeks which is a pain. I also have very painful trips to loo and had to have rectum internal yesterday - not pleasant !!! but found that mirena can irritate your uterus and make i more sensitive and your bowel lies right behind so when you have full bowel it lies against uterus which causes it to go into spasm which cause pain ! great !!! I have been told to hang on to my coil until atleast august/september . good luck with yours

alero81 · 01/05/2005 04:21

well to the both of you if it causing that much have it removed.. and sally do not get one fitted if the pill does not work for you then this won't either believe me i have trouble with just about everything had mirena fitted about 8 months ago just had it removed on friday.. there is just something about having something that is plastic stuck up there that is not normal... i have ran a low grade fever every since i had it fitted.. my advice pick a different way to go... most docs like for you to have it fitted because it takes like 5 minutes and it is a quick $500.00 for them.. i suggest to anyone that has this and is depressed can't stop eating, has mood swings, pain of any kind to have it removed as soon as possible because these things can cause infections and countless other things.. i am not on medication to try and clear up what damage it has done... i do not remomend this product to anyone!!!!!!!!!!

mcmum · 01/05/2005 08:00

sorry to hear of your problems, my gp wont tske it out until august /september so im hoping for a miracle before then im flying to florida in a few weeks and i am due on day of flight and two week period will last for whole duration of holiday . great eh !

biglips · 01/05/2005 18:05

ive been on it since Dec 04 and had no problems whatsoever, i remember the docs said you may get heavy periods but not all women have the heavy periods.... mine had started to go lighter and only last 2 days, where before it was heavy and lasted 12 - 14 days, so now its great!

mcmum · 01/05/2005 19:39

biglips, have you had coil or pill since dec sorry ? if coil how long did it take to settle down ?

biglips · 01/05/2005 20:54

sorry ive had coil since December 04 (8 weeks after given birth) and docs said it usually takes 6 months to settle.. i was on the heaviest side and i thought this is not normal but eventually it does goes lighter and then its stops (meaning no blood)

biglips · 01/05/2005 20:57

it does take couple of months to settle as i remember twice i came on in a month (came on 2nd period after i just had my first period 2 weeks ago)

mcmum · 01/05/2005 22:56

biglips, thanks for that i seem to have light period for 2 weeks off for two weeks then on again ! i can cope with that its just the pain i get when i go to the`loo gp says its a spasm because my uterus and bowel are very close together.

alero81 · 05/05/2005 02:53

does anyone know how long you bleed after you have it removed working on my 6th day...

yaya · 05/05/2005 17:49

alero81, took your advice I'm getting mine removed tommorrow!!! How was it? I'm gonna take some painkillers really scared as insertion really hurt!!! I tried sticking out for 6 months but the weight gain is terrible, anyone losted weight instantly once removed? I have BBQ in 3 weeks to go to and wanna loss a few pounds!!!

alero81 · 06/05/2005 02:30

YAYA... it takes a matter of seconds to remove it and there was a little pinch but that was about it.. the only thing my doc gave me some antibiotics and you will bleed kind of heavy or just like a normal period.. i only wiched i had it removed sooner... and yes it is almost instantly that you feel relief and i feel that i have lost some weight but you don't feel so bloated i mean it was just a relief... good luck..
